I love these early animations. I noticed the animators worked on synchronizing the music and sounds with the animation. This was such a new medium at the time and animators were often in unknown territories of drawing, art, and music. It's so cool to see how this developed into what became Disney animation. Thank you SMK for taking us back to another great day in Disney history!! - MyPark  943.7 #91 5-8-13 7:09AM Like  Reply
From what i read, it marks a turning point in animation style. Beforehand, characters would start & stop almost mechanically. Norm Ferguson (one of the animators) developed a style where the characters never completely stopped, but when one part would stop another part would start moving, making the whole movement much more fluid. Disney liked the effect so much he made all the other animators study Ferguson's style. - Duchess_SMK  3254.0 #11 5-8-13 7:53AM

Did you know that the actual Tower is one of the tallest buildings in Anaheim? Also, because of its height, it would have required a light on top for the pilots flying over if the height went over 200 feet. So, Disney made it 199 feet tall, thus not requiring a red light and to keep the tower in "show". - BaseballMickey_CM  2810.8 #16 5-5-13 9:21AM Like(2)  Reply

I saw this on another site earlier and was hoping you'd cover it! Julie Andrews has been one of my favorites since I first saw "Mary Poppins" and "Sound of Music" way back in 1964! My aunt took me to see SOM and that's when I decided I wanted to do musical theatre. I had both the SOM and MP albums and with my friends would recreate the shows in my backyard...I was whatever role Julie played, of course! I also had every Broadway show album she ever did. She's led an amazing life...fans should check out her autobiography. And of course, I've seen Jingles...and managed to ride her several times. - Gia  782.1 #119 4-8-13 6:15PM Like(4)  Reply

I've always loved the GC diorama portion, and to add to your post: The main theme of Ferde GrofΓ©'s "On The Trail," the third movement from his Grand Canyon Suite, is piped in through the train's sound system as it enters the diorama. The same movement was used in Disney's 1958 film "Grand Canyon" which was a "pictorial representation" of the music, filmed at the Grand Canyon. - Gia  782.1 #119 3-31-13 10:25AM Like(2)  Reply

Very interesting. I never knew that that is what it was. Winemaking is definitely a big part of California but it almost seems as though it were out of place- like something they did to sort of fill in the space. I think it's great that they kept the vineyards and the theme. Thanks Duchess! - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1778.7 #42 3-30-13 8:45AM Like  Reply
They do still make wine there I believe...someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I know DCA used to be in a partnership with Mondavi and they only sold and served THIER wine. I personalty don't like how relaxed Disney has become with the grooming of its Cast and that goes along with the costuming as well. Back in the 90s when I was there they use to send people home for their hair not being neat or side burns being to long, to much makeup, wrong color socks, the list goes on and on. I obviously have nothing against facial hair as I have it myself but think that they need to do a better job and making sure its cast is presentable on stage - Dave  8632.9 #2 3-28-13 1:03PM Like(15)  Reply

If I remember correctly the seats would deflate and shake a little to give the feeling of taking off. I thought this attraction was ok. It was a good place to sit for a while, especially in the summer when it was hot out. - DisneyGrandma  336.7 #441 3-21-13 9:20AM Like(1)  Reply

Good morning! This day in Disney history, March 18th,1967. The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction (my personal favorite) opens in New Orleans Square. The debut kicks off w/great excitement, as a group of surly sea-dogs, led by Wally Boag  More...
I don't remember my first ride on POTC, although I'm sure it was the year it opened (I was 10). It was my mother's favorite ride. She wouldn't do roller coaster type rides, or spinning, or drop rides. Yet she would giggle and scream during POTC's drops saying it was just perfect for her. The background story wasn't readily available, but my mom was a history teacher and used POTC to teach me about Lafitte, the era, and pirates in general. She knew the song by heart, and would softly sing it throughout the whole ride. Her last visit was in the Fall of 1997, but every time I go on it I can't help but think of her and how much she enjoyed it. It's not my absolute #1 favorite attraction, but it holds the most memories. - Gia  782.1 #119 3-18-13 2:26PM Like(12)  Reply

My first visit to DL was in 1973. My then boyfriend (now hubs) took me to the park on a very rainy Sat morn. First place we went was Pirates. When we exited it had stopped raining and the sun was shining on ROA. After riding Pirates and seeing this beautiful park shining I was so overcome with emotion I'll never forget it. That was the moment I fell in love with Disneyland. - DisneyGrandma  336.7 #441 3-18-13 9:20AM Like(6)  Reply

This is a fun attraction! What I really think is so cool about Astro Blasters (and Toy Story Midway Mania) is the interactiveness of the attraction. Not only do you experience it, you can participate in the attraction! In fact before the first time I rode Astro Blasters, I didn't even know it was a game that you play. It blew me away! So to answer your questions (LOL), I miss stuff like this. As a kid, this was so much fun. Yes, the attractions are amazing, but this gave us non-so-thrill-ride-please-don't-make-me-ride-that-again-i'm-going-to-cry kids a fabulous alternative to interact with the characters we watched every afternoon. -
