I'm new to this whole pin trading thing. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Forums? Groups? Where can I buy the lanyards? And pins? Are there any specific rules? Is it frowned upon if I don't buy authorized Disney Pins?

If you are near enough to visit there are several cast members in the Disneyland parks including the Downtown Pin Traders who have been trading since the beginning and are passionate enough about trading to really answer or find the answer to most of your questions. I am terrible with names but you will know when you meet them. There is a pin trading book that was written by a MouseWaiter http://amzn.to/LLy1Pa that could give an idea on what types of pins are acceptable for trading and what one might look for in pins that are being purchased. I got this book when I first started trading/collecting and it still helps me today. Disney has also been putting a lot of work into their pin trading web pages and they even work well on some mobile devices (IPhone for sure) http://www.disneyparksmerchandise.com/pins. the Disney site has quite a bit of the information you are looking for like etiquette and guidelines as well as great pictures of most of the pins.
