For my parents they would take us out as long as needed when we were in Elm/middle school but I am now a sophomore and my sis is in college we can't miss school that much. So my family and I take vaca in the summer and this year were are doing Christmas break .
I missed a week in HS to go to a WDW family reunion. Look at the big picture- family time or a week of school? You bring their missed work along and do a little bit each day. Some people get all fired up about missing school, I think family is number one as long as its not often - timonT

My daughter is in 3rd grade & I took her out of school for 5 days in March. This September I will be taking her out for 3 days, I planned the trip around a long weekend so we will have 6 day in WDW. I don't like the crowds either so I try to avoid summer & school breaks. In kindergarten I took her out twice, 5 days each time for trips to WDW. I just tell myself that I only get her at this age once & our time together is just as important as school. She makes up the work & it's fine. Take them out & have fun! - perdita

I took my son out for a week for his 5th b-day. I am planning on taking him out for a week again next year for his 10th b-day. However, he must be getting good grades, and I do get the work that he will miss. For one DL trip he did an extra assignment as well as his regular work. - Lelundrial

We take our daughter out for 5-6 days in the fall for our annual trip. She will be in 2nd grade this year so she shouldn't miss too much! We are going in December next year so she will be out 6 days then too. We get plenty of take home work too - girlonfire
