Anyone that has taken kids out of school for vacation I new advice. We plan to go in September because that's the best time for us to get off work. Our kids will be in 6th, 10th, and 12th grade (the oldest wanted disney for his last family vacation before joining the marines). They will be pulled out Of school for 8 days. What did y'all do about make up work? Did the school let them make up everything? Did your kids struggle?

My son is younger but the teachers were really good about emailing me things he couldn't get ahead of time. I brought a laptop and we still did the school's online reading programs so they were logged while he was gone. I know personally email has made it so easy to keep up with things better. :) - singleprincess  67.5 #3869 8:31PM
Im in college now.. And ive been going to disney since i was three. I was pulled from school every year.. Even missed my first few days of senior year! Usually just brought some work with me - Boardwalkgirl  55.2 #87 9:35PM
Have then talk to their teachers. Every teacher is different some will let you make up the work while others won't it all depends on the teacher and even sometimes the school - cooldisgrl_CM  143.2 #2652 2:07AM
As long as the teacher gives you the assignment kids can complete and turn in on time, set aside a couple hours each day for school. A break by the pool with a laptop works. Now a days many schools don't approve family vacations as excused absences, which IMHO is silly because social interaction and discovery are important life skills put in action at WDW. - Betsyboo  18.2 #160 5:11AM
I let the school and teacher know two weeks ahead of time. He would usually get his assignments before he left. One year he also did an extra assignment. It depends on the teacher. Some seem to not really care, while others expect the children to keep up. - Lelundrial  458.6 #400 7:42AM
We have always taken the grandkids out of school mid sept and was amazing. Each child brought their back packs with assignments. We worked on them at the airport or on drive down, as much as we could. They would do some any free time we had and if any left, on the way home. They were always done with it by the time we got home. Now we have run into a glitch because one if the schools only allow 6 days missing a semester or you fail that semester ugg!!!! So the last two years we went in mid aug and last week in aug and it was not as good as going in sept but doable. If you get ok from schools I would say sept. Happy planning - mmddgp  393.0 #17 7:44AM
Our schools only allow 4 parent request days or you fail the semester. That really creates a problem if later in the year you might have a funeral or something that you need them out of school to attend. I'm glad my grandchildren are homeschooled, because we can travel on off seasons. - ally  507.8 #11 7:59AM
We went to Disneyland one year in late August with grandchildren, because my son-in-law had a conference. I was really surprised at how uncrowded it was. I guess most families were already in school or were getting ready for school. There were very few children in the parks. - ally  507.8 #11 8:03AM
We always take our daughter out for 6 days in the fall. We take makeup work for her to do on the plane ride and she's never had any major issues . The school has always been good about letting me take her put and I don't let her lay out any other days. - girlonfire  52.6 #91 8:22AM
We take a trip to Disney once a year at least try to. Luckily right now we only have 1 of our 4 in school and as long as we tell them a week in advance they excuse the absences because it is considered an educational experience. We have Ethan write a report on what he learned while we were at Disney and he turns that into his teacher. They all him to make up the work and he hasn't struggled with any of it. This next school year we will have another in school and I fear we may to start planning our trips on their breaks so Erik won't miss school. He has a hard time adjusting to things. - BBNMickey  20.8 #152 8:37AM
We have went the last 6 years and pulled our kids out of school each time. We always went in sept! I always wrote notes and let the teachers know on the first day of school that vacation was coming up and I would like homework in advance if possible. It's always been fine but this last year ( a couple months ago) was rough. It's harder the older they get. My kids r in 6th and 7 th grade. We decided after this year not to go in sept anymore. But in your case since this is a one time thing go, have fun, and just advise the school and teachers ASAP! - shewsluvwdw  58.0 #85 4:57PM
we went the week of Labor day and the kids missed 4 days. They are only allowed 5 missed days of school per semester. They are in 6th and 10th grade. My son's middle school teachers all have their lesson plans and homework on the school website, so all he had to do was look at that and do the work. My daughter's high school was much more difficult. Some teachers actually gave her a really hard time about being out of school. We will not be taking them out of school any more for trips. As others have said, it is too difficult for the older ones to catch up with their missed work! - ncjal  206.8 #34 8:01AM
