Seeing that a lot of people here are on Disney Vacation Club member, is it worth-it to get one? I am very slow understanding the concept of vacation ownership, but is becoming a member will be a good one, especially if your Disney trip is always "LAST MINUTE, or THIS COMING WEEKEND?" (Apologies if this is a personal question)

@puddy as an overseas member of DVC since around 1995, when it was just OKW. We have stayed in fantastic accommodations , cruised with Mickey and spent time at Vero Beach, which I love. Well worth our initial outlay. Being from overseas we tend to go for longer trips and not being great forward planners now seem to struggle to get resort we want for the length of our stay. With a bit of planning I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem. I do find it annoying that accommodation can be available at the last minute but they will only sell it 😑. I don't find it cost effective to use points for DLP but will try DCA at some point. Annual dues have gone up - take into account currency conversion too. Hope that helps. - rink2  93.9 #66 11:24AM
The answer to your question is, it depends! You really need to run the numbers, look at your personal situation, and decide if it makes sense for you. I have been going to Disney an average of once a year since I was born, and didn't see that changing any time soon, so I decided it made sense for me. I'm so glad I did! I can stay at deluxe villa resorts now instead if value or moderate resorts, and it's already paid for! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  929.8 #3 6:47PM
I agree. - yessy  201.6 #38 4:45AM
I can tell you from my point of view, we pretty much always do last min trips , and it really is great that at min all I have to worry about is airline tickets, we definitely take advantage of ours , we love to stay at deluxe hotels and will be staying at the Disneyland hotel in dec , non DVC does use up a bit of the points but its worth it to me , why save when you never know what tomorrow will bring. I like that it goes by points and certain times of the yr so a studio can be like 15 points a night and depending how many points you have you can still use the rest whenever , or bank for the next yr or borrow, you should talk to someone from DVC , they are so wonderful and not at all pushy, oh and you can always add points throughout the yrs we have added many:) - tracsant  1033.7 #2 6:47PM
I have also added several times now thru the years. - Pooh147856  205.4 #37 6:56PM
DVC is great but if you are a last minute planner you may not be able to find any availability more than a day here and there. For the best planning you really have to book at 7 months out. Something to look in to, it does save a lot of money over time! - Andrea84  653.1 #8 6:49PM
Have been a DVC member for ten years now and totally think it is worth it. The price of hotels are always going up but with DVC you are assured the point value will remain the same. Once your mortgage is paid then you only have your association dues to pay. You own for 50 years and it can be passed on to family. For me I would never to be Abe to go every year and stay in the type if resorts that we do if I did not have DVC. Only regret is that I did not buy sooner. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. You can reach me at e mail as I am in the Mouse Wait adress book. - Pooh147856  205.4 #37 6:54PM
I agree. - yessy  201.6 #38 4:48AM
thank you for your inputs! idk if i should get one or not... my biggest concern will be the financial part, especially when i do not know what will happen with my work... but the advantage of staying at a deluxe hotel is kinda tempting... again thank you for the inputs :) - otilegna  1840.0 #71 7:43PM
I will add to this question and how much out of pocket are you up for and what are the perks and initial costs?? - puddy77  222.8 #1584 8:01PM
that is a good question... - otilegna  1840.0 #71 8:13PM
The initial costs depend on how you finance. Disney's interest rate is HIGH, so if you have good credit you're better off securing your own financing. There is also annual dues with a due date based on your Use Year. It's best to talk to someone at DVC to find out exactly what your options are. - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  929.8 #3 9:36PM
I actually wanted to look into this because we live near dland and stay the night down there all the time and have been going Florida now once a year.. If we do one disney vacation a year is it worth it?? - danicali43  27.0 #5580 10:28PM
It is very difficult to use your points to stay at the Grand Californian as compared to one of the several WDW DVC properties. You choose how many points you purchase, so just purchase enough for a week or two at WDW and it's worth it! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  929.8 #3 4:35AM
We are using our points at the Disneyland hotel, it's more than a DVC resort but not that bad and if you are only staying a night than it really shouldn't be bad at all - tracsant  1033.7 #2 6:20AM
Good choice for staying at DLand Hotel. Tracy, what building are u staying at? - otilegna  1840.0 #71 9:17AM
I cant explain how worth it it is. My parents have been dvc members since i believe 1999. We go once a year sometimes twice an the fact that getting a hotel is so darn easy is amazing - Boardwalkgirl  55.2 #91 9:43AM
@angelito I'm not sure, I know nothing about the hotel lol since this will be my first trip , is there one I should put a request in for??? - tracsant  1033.7 #2 10:15AM
Is it more worth it if you frequent WDW than DL? I've always wanted to look into it but we mostly go to DL. I've only been to WDW twice in 7 years and plan to go in Feb 2015 but then won't again until the kids are all tall enough to ride everything. But we go to DL at least twice a year, if not more, so wasn't sure if it's worth it for that. - brodysmommy  370.8 #548 10:52AM
If its mostly for dl it depends how many night. For just a studio in a dl hotel is 17 - 30 points a day depending on the season. One bed 30 and above. U need to sit down with a dvc cm to see if its for you. - islandgirl58  288.9 #21 11:23AM
@tracsant... If you can, ask for Adventure Tower with the view of downtown disney... Upper room, if applicable! Or grt the concierge level floor.... Fantasy tower might have the front desk and shops, adventure tower has its history. (The only remnant of the old disneyland hotel, even if the originals are all gone) - otilegna  1840.0 #71 11:57AM
Ok thanks I will have to look into adventure tower and find out if they have specific areas they put DVC members - tracsant  1033.7 #2 12:19PM
Yay... Hopefully the christmas decor is up when u go there... Also the World of Color Winter Dream, and check DL Fantasmic :) - otilegna  1840.0 #71 12:22PM
I'm going dec 4th-11th but 6th is when I will be at DL , the first day will be touristy stuff and the 2nd will be universal , I can't wait for DL , I'm so looking forward to meeting up with some awesome MWers - tracsant  1033.7 #2 12:25PM
Hope you will love it! It is a good park and easy to navigate... Is this your 1st time there??? - otilegna  1840.0 #71 1:46PM
Yes it's my first time and I'm really excited, I get to expeirence disney for the first time all over again - tracsant  1033.7 #2 2:05PM
Well you will experience the one that started it all :). If you can, do a tour there (walk with walts footsteps). I never tried it, but you can able to see his apartment and the lobby of club 33 - otilegna  1840.0 #71 10:22PM
