My family isn't poor but we aren't close to rich either lol and they only time we travel is to disney once a year. I see there Are a lot of DVM how much does this cost and is it worth it?

DVC cost is based on the number of points you get. So you have to determine how many points you want to buy. If your going to finance with disney or from you bank. We finance with Disney they have a high rate but it was lower than what our bank offered at the time because our credits was bad. It was worth it to me because we deeded it to our children. After we pay the points our children just have to pay the annual dues or the could sell them if they don't want it. We go every year. We stay in hotels we would not have been able to stay in. We are not limited to a specific week we can go anytime. Stay anywhere. We can use the membership around the world by exchanging. When the cost of the accommodations increase at Disney I don't have to worry about that. I buy my plane ticket park passes and dining and I'm done. I don't have to get the dining plan because I can cook. For my family it was worth it. It's a guarantee vacation every year. If I didn't have it I do not know if I would be vacationing every year. I say go listen to the presentation and see if its some thing that fits your family and finances. - 5disneylovers  1191.7 #6 12:59PM
You really need to run the numbers and determine if it makes sense for you. Since I have been going to Disney (DL or WDW) an average of once a year since I was born, and don't see that changing anytime soon, it made sense for me! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1454.1 #3 1:32PM
Agree, we recently became members, just FYI the minimum buy n from Disney directly is 160 points. But you can also buy a resale, which can be much cheaper and has no point min. However, resales can only be used at dvc properties, not on other property collections (non dvc Disney hotels) or cruises. We bought direct, if we ever get more points though it would be a resale. For us we love disney, it forces us to vacation at least every other year (we are bad about taking time off) and it allows us some major luxury/upgrades we wouldn't normally pay for. - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 2:01PM
We also aren't wealthy, we had to seriously budget to purchase. It's not something to take lightly, it's expensive and you have to be willing to commit to 40-50 years of membership. - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 2:02PM
You locked in but once you pay off your points off you are only paying your dues and taxes. I think that's the part people struggle with the length of time locked in. - 5disneylovers  1191.7 #6 2:17PM
Well and i know for some without kids to leave it to the length can be an issue. Or people who don't imagine taking Disney vacations after kids (yes you could do all exchange trips at that point) but an argument against is that you are locked in to the options provided through dvc, if you want to use your points/membership to get your money worth at least. - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 4:13PM
I don't think they have a minimum for buying points from Disney. We only bought 100 and we bought through Disney. They never said anything about a minimum. It may differ depending on which resort you buy. - rlpologal89  15.3 #202 4:55PM
When we signed up in January the min they would let us buy was 160. At AKL if that makes a difference. - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 6:09PM
@rpl when did you buy in? The minimum has gone up a few times. This is a link explaining the whole process. The minimum is explained 3/4 down in the "resale or direct from Disney section" - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 6:16PM
http://www.mousesavers.com/other-disney-vacations/disney-vacation-club/ - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 7:06PM
Oh, we bought 2 years ago! That could be why!! I've heard everyone say the sooner the better! Point prices go up and I guess the minimum does too!! We bought in at a great price! - rlpologal89  15.3 #202 7:22AM
We didn't do it because when I considered the payments and dues, we didn't want to be tied into it in case something happened. We figured that my husband doesn't often go, and I don't want to cook on vacation. So I go with other family and we go to the hotels that fit our budget that year. I think it's an individual thing. If I had a big family and all liked to go, it would be different. - ally  509.0 #18 2:11PM
Not to mention I won't live 50 more years! Lol - ally  509.0 #18 2:20PM
But your kids would enjoy it when you leave it to them - 5disneylovers  1191.7 #6 3:30PM
So worth it. It made sense to me because we went every year and the Hotels go up. I started out with 150 points and have added more thru the years. We could never afford to stay at the places we stay at if we weren't DVC members. We also purchased thru Disney and have it automatically deducted from my checking account so I just budget it in. It's great because you can leave it to the kids when your gone. You need to decide for yourself but if your on the fence I would say talk to them directly. There is no pressure from them to purchase. - Pooh147856  408.2 #22 6:16PM
Any I don't cook on Vacation even if there is a full kitchen. I get the dinning plan and feel its well worth it. - Pooh147856  408.2 #22 6:21PM
We also appreciated that there was no pressure to purchase when talking to them. We met with different people 2-3 times before signing up. It was so nice to get all our questions answered and not feel like they are forcing us to decide - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 6:22PM
Also agree to dining plan. The most we do is cereal and toast for breakfast. - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 6:23PM
Yea I don't cook either. I cook all year. Ha ha - 5disneylovers  1191.7 #6 6:36PM
Dvc is so worth it if you plan to go every year my wife and me spent 2 and a half weeks for our honeymoon a few years back and stayed at our home resort saratoga springs and if we paid cash it would have been like 8 grand so trust me it is worth it - clubkid74  38.4 #126 10:28PM
We have always used our points to go to WDW and once the cruise. There are so many places and things to do using them I do sometimes wonder if I should investigate other options. Then I think - I'm in the happiest place, have beautiful accommodation wherever I stay, great discount on AP's so I'm more than pleased we signed up. - rink2  266.7 #33 2:27AM
We want to join this so bad because yearly it seems affordable. What stops us is the $20,000 to start. It would take us years of not going to Disney to save that up. - chicky5801  14.3 #207 4:11AM
Talk to Disney or your bank about financing it. Costs a bit more in the long run, but can help you make it happen sooner, and there is no prepayment penalty (with Disney at least). - Pixarprincess  544.5 #403 6:09AM
