So, which is better -- on property or off site? We usually stay on property. But this 10 day trip we decided to rent a vacation home. we are paying less than $40/night for lodging. That leaves more $$ for extravagant dining and souvenirs! Let's discuss....

Some say it takes away from the magic. Some say it doesn't. I've personally never stayed off property so I'm no help lol but in the end if it saves you enough to do more new things at DW then I say take advantage of what you can! All up to you! - ariel116  99.3 #65 6:48AM
I have stayed off site a couple times (before I had children), but ever since we have been going with our kids, we stay on site. I think it is SO MUCH easier staying on site. EVERYTHING is there for you and you have nothing to worry about. If you get hungry, walk to the food court, the magic is definitely increased staying on site as well. - ncjal  234.4 #32 6:59AM
We always stay 1-3 days at a universal on site hotel before checking in to disney( we are dvc members ) and we have traveled back and forth but not anymore, and I can only speak for myself. I don't really want to have to travel back and forth especially when we are so tired at the end of the day or early morning , no extra magic hours which we always take advantage of and idk why but I just don't get the same magical feeling of wow I'm in my own little wonderful world, but saving money is always a great thing:) - tracsant  1133.8 #2 7:50AM
I love staying onsite and completely escaping reality! Lol that's part of what I love about a Disney vacation!! I don't have to think about anything except what time to be at the bus or boat! For many years at DL we stayed off site...until one summer we decided to stay at Grand CA just to see...wow! What a difference! For me it's worth it! - brittandkell  440.2 #449 7:57AM
Although we haven't actually stayed off property we have thought about it and have stayed at the Hilton Bonnet Creek which is technically off site since its not owned by Disney even though its in the middle of WDW, I really think staying off property takes away some of the magic and escape from reality and everything is there for you, personally for us it's really worth it to stay on site, even when we stayed at Bonnet Creek even though it was right in the middle of WDW there was still a difference, but if your saving money that is always a good thing - nodell111  166.4 #50 8:06AM
We stayed off property the very first year we went in 1993 at a guest quarter suite in lake buena vista. It was very nice and we were in awe of everything Disney had to offer n they did have a shuttle to the park or TTC and then back but the waiting for the shuttle was worse than waiting for the Disney buses. The next year we stayed at all star sports and what a difference! We have never stayed off property again. We have rented a car and have driven to universal for a couple days but that's it once we are in property never have to drive while we are there. Love staying in property but I have thought about staying off to save some money when you are booking two rooms and buying 8 park passes plus air and food it adds ups sooo fast. Good luck on your planning - mmddgp  584.1 #10 8:37AM
Thanks guys. This is our first time staying off property. There are 2 families traveling together so a house was the most cost effective way to go. If we were going just the 4 of us, we'd stay on site. I am afraid that some of the magic will be lost.... how do the EMH work? We never noticed the difference. How do they know we arent resort guests? I have always had a KTTW, so this is a first for me! - amajam  20.8 #158 9:33AM
For EMH fhey ask to see your room key at the entrance to each attraction. I'm sure you will have a great time no matter where you stay. :) - brittandkell  440.2 #449 9:50AM
And we always rent a car, havent used thebuses in the last 3 trips. So buses are not a draw for me - amajam  20.8 #158 9:34AM
Since you are renting a car, should be a better experience. Last year was our first year staying off site. We were mainly there for the Star Wars convention, and just decided to enjoy the themeparks on the side. There was a shuttle bus form our hotel to the park. However, it only stopped at Epcot and didn't have a very late pick up at the end of the day. When we were coming back from Magic Kingdom, we had to run from the monorail so that we wouldn't miss our bus. - Lelundrial  556.3 #330 11:03AM
Extra magic hours is for guests staying on Property only :-( - Boardwalkgirl  55.9 #93 5:10AM
Last two trips and this one coming up we are saying on property. We love it, and been staying at Coronado springs. Just seems to be easier to have the busses take us to whichever park and back, extra magic hours, and dining plan. I'm sure either way is a pretty fun vacation - TinkTinkTink  201.7 #39 5:53AM
