5th Anniversary Princess Half Marathon medal. I couldn't run it but it's sure pretty!

A year ago I would have laughted at anyone who would have told me I could do a Half Marathon. Well I did it! At first I signed up for the Tink thinking I'd walk it. They said you should train at 15 min/ mile pace (which is a fast walk). Then I was challenged... someone said why don't you try jogging a little bit of it. With gradual training I ended up running ~90% of it (walking inclines and water stations). Not only that i think i smiled most of it. Running through DL and DCA, characters and CM cheering us on. Floats, bands, music, and many, many people cheering us on (including MErs). It was one of my top 5 Disney experiences. Both my teen daughters ran the 5k the same weekend and now want to run longer races. I hope to inspire others to do it. Start with a 5k. It's a fun event that can motivate you to get fit. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 3:24PM
Wow! That's inspiring! I usually walk at 3.5 and can jog for 2-3 min at a time. I'm in decent shape, I've just never been a runner. I think I could handle a 5k! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 3:30PM
Thats great you can already walk 3.5! It's surprising how quickly i was able to go from only being able to running 30 seconds at a time to 1/2 marathon ready....4 months of training. Pretty amazing considering it had been 20 years since I had last run. I walk plenty but always disliked running. Now I continue to run 12 miles a week. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 4:37PM
You are an inspiration!!! I want to do it. Where there is a will, there's a way right??? 😊 Maybe when my youngest is a little older, it will give me more free time to train. - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 4:48PM
And yes, definitely start with a 5K... there are all kinds of local runs here too, to practice in. - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 4:49PM
Very inspiring!!! That's my goal for next year! I started running in September and could only run a few blocks! I'm up to 2 miles a day! Last week I was so excited to break a 14:00/mile! I'm in the 13's now lol! Thanks for the motivation!! - brittandkell  547.4 #413 5:04PM
That's awesome!! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 6:22PM
Way to go BrittandKell! Sounds like you're off to a great start! I can remember being so amazed and excited when my pace times improved! Do you use a running App? I like RunKeeper. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 6:52PM
Yep! Workin at it :) I use run keeper too! Tried a few others but like it best! - brittandkell  547.4 #413 7:21PM
πŸ‘ - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 9:59PM
Beautiful! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 7:55AM
That is so pretty! - ccmom  187.5 #48 7:55AM
Pretty. I can't run either. - 5disneylovers  1254.2 #7 9:23AM
Very nice - skcanfield  589.2 #14 10:22AM
I would love love love to make this a yearly tradition for myself, but I can barely run to the mailbox. I just don't know if I will ever be able to classify myself as a runner, even with a little training. Maybe I should do something about that and just go for it! So you have to 'run' the whole thing? - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 11:37AM
They have a minimum speed or you get pulled. I don't think I could do it either! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 11:43AM
Baha, then yeah, prob won't ever happen for me then!! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 1:01PM
Pulled out lol. Where's the disney walking marathon. ? I could do that. May I would be inspired if I were chasing goofy. - 5disneylovers  1254.2 #7 1:04PM
Haha!! YES!! A walking Disney marathon, where you could stop and pose with characters after every mile, hang out with them to get your second wind, autograph signing, just a party at every stop. It could last all day long!! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 4:43PM
It's very doable MrsIncredible. 2 years ago the weather was brutal (I don't do well in high humidity) and I walked almost the whole thing. If you are a faster walker you are golden. If you are a slow walker then I suggest trying intervals. Walk a couple minutes then run a bit them walk a bit then run a bit. When I first started I couldn't even run for a minute and had to train to get there. Disney races are like a big party so if you want it badly enough it is so worth it! - SorcererMky  306.1 #946 11:55AM
That sounds doable. It's it utter craziness for a first timer? Like logistics wise? How do you know what to do and where to go? - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 1:02PM
Why not try a 5k? I hear they aren't as strict with the minimum speed. - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 1:17PM
RunDisney is very organized and on their websites they have training plans and they post a PDF/ pamphlet with ALL the info about the event. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 9:48AM
For a first timer? probably if you've never done a half before but there are plenty of free message boards you can join and ask all the questions you like. I've certainly asked them all at one point or another. I'm happy to answer them as well if you'd like. Message boards include RunningOfTheEars.com and Disboards.com has a group called WISH. You have to register for both of them but registering is free and there are tons of people who are always happy to help. We've all been there. :) - SorcererMky  306.1 #946 3:16PM
And yes, the 5K time limit is a suggestion. They say 16 minute miles but I've walked every single one well over the time limits and have never had a problem. Photo ops with characters take time! lol. The 5K is a great place to start if you are worried. I always say if you can handle a day at Disney you can definitely do a Disney 5K. - SorcererMky  306.1 #946 3:19PM
Awesome!! Yes, I would definitely make character stops a priority, lol!! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 4:45PM
It was neat to see that after the Tink a lot of MWers posted in the DL lounge that they were going to do their first ever run races at the DL 1/2, 10k and 5k in Sept. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 4:47PM
The fever is spreading! I definitely feel a Disney run bug coming on!! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 4:51PM
@MrsIncredible so happy to hear you're catching the bug! When you decide you want to start, get the right shoes for you and train gradually. Find ways to make it enjoyable for you (train with a buddy, find trails or places you enjoy, listen to music, etc). Also treat your body well - Stretch and Hydrate! - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 5:14PM
What brand of shoes do you prefer? - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 6:23PM
I'm not brand specific. I went to a running store that did an analysis to determine what type of shoes work best for me. The right socks makes a difference too. See if there's a store that does that near you. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 6:48PM
I woke up this morning and think I've caught the fever too!!! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 6:50AM
Yay, Tiffany!! That's awesome!! I am SO ready to do this!! Well, mentally anyway, ha! - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 8:39AM
πŸ‘Š If you've got the fever! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 9:08AM
πŸ‘ŠI've got it bad! I want to do a run in WDW. Haven't decided yet. - NikkiMickey  1686.3 #110 9:52AM
Definitely agree with Nikki. My biggest mistake for my first half marathon was not getting fitted for shoes. I got blisters like I'd never seen before and seriously considered never running again. Find a local running store that will evaluate your stride and your foot fall and will give you a good idea of what would work better for you. - SorcererMky  306.1 #946 7:14AM
Appreciate the first timer tips SO much! I have no clue what I don't know! This has helped a ton! πŸ‘Š - mrsincredible  1380.4 #4 8:40AM
Sounds like fun. That would be a great way to have a MW meet up too! - luvDW  17.9 #187 9:42AM
I've done 2 princess weekends, 2 goofy weekends (no I am not Goofy, lol), and the inaugural tower of terror last year. wdw is huge and a totally different experience from DL. It was a shock to me but a very cool experience. If you're considering traveling for a Disney race I have a couple travel agents I'd be happy to recommend. They made my life much easier and you don't pay travel agents, they give you the same prices as disney (they can even do discounts). Disney pays them. When you know nothing about wdw which was me a couple years ago that's a big help. - SorcererMky  306.1 #946 10:50PM
I agree, DL and WDW are totally different! I grew up going to DL every summer. On my first trip to WDW I WAS a travel agent and I was still totally overwhelmed! I have since grown to love it for what it is. I haven't done any runs...yet. But, you all have got me seriously thinking about it! - CollegeDisneyKnowledgeGrad  1472.0 #3 4:54AM
