Thank you all so much!! There are just not enough words to describe our feelings right now. Josh always struggled in public school - he was always the kid with behavioral issues and would inevitably be passed to the next grade each year under 'no child left behind' with failing grades. The older he got, the harder it became - on him, and on us. We had tried everything from ADD meds, to counselors, family therapists, teachers aids and special programs to assist him. We met with the schools so often that we knew the staff and superintendents by name. The more we 'interfered' in his life, the more angry and more defiant he became. I just knew he'd end up in trouble with the law, on drugs and alcohol, dropping out of school, or worse. Then, we found this program for high-risk teens with the Arkansas National Guard. We sent him there, honestly with little hope... our last hope, that he'd finally turn his life around. By the grace of God, many prayers, support from extended family and friends, and his sheer newfound determination to finish something good for the first time in his life, he got his GED, and is graduating tomorrow with aspirations of going into the service next year. I know you are so proud of Josh! Congrats to all! My son had similar problems in school, but always managed to pass somehow. It turned out that he needs ADD meds, even as a 35 year old. About age 28, he started getting things together and now has a great career in software engineering. However, I remember those horrible school days so well.
