Good morning! This day in Disney history, June 4th, 1958. Disneylands Sailing Ship Columbia is officially christened on the ROA. Joe Fowler (Disneylands construction supervisor & a former naval admiral) is on hand dressed as a sailing captain of the 1700s. Gretchen Richmond, wife of Alfred Carroll (A.C.) Richmond then Vice Admiral of the US Coast Guard, did th  More...
Wow!!!!! Awesome history on the Sailing Ship Columbia! I've read bits and pieces on this but never in such detail! She's truly a beautiful ship! I've been on this attraction many times. So much to see. It's really surprising! Be sure to go below deck to see lots of details and interesting things! But do not touch the gun on the bow! The CM's are a little testy about it. I've eaten at the Bengal Barbeque. Nice place to stop for a snack! Thank you SMK! What a great Disney history post today! You're so cool!! - IMissDisney  1195.5 #111 7:37AM
Did you try and touch the gun MyPark?! ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜‚ what happened? What's your favorite thing to get from Bengal? - Duchess_SMK  5617.3 #14 8:09AM
Several guests tried before the ship sailed! If CMs were permitted to slap hands, they'd get their hands slapped ๐Ÿ˜‚. I've only had one of the skewers offered at Bengal Barbeque. It was a teriyaki I think. Very tasty. - IMissDisney  1195.5 #111 8:14AM
The Columbia is ok... It sure does look nice when they hoist that Jolly Roger up durring Fantasmic... oh haha Just kidding... sort of. I do always wish I had one though. Bengal BBQ is a family favorite, for me especially, I usually have Two Safari Skewers because I hardly notice the asparagus all I see is BACON! Now I am hungry and in need of an adventure at sea...Thank you miss. - GrumpyPirateDad  1783.7 #68 7:49AM
You mean you DON'T have one? Perhaps THAT'S why you're grumpy?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Yay! Enjoy your voyage and please have a bacon wrapped asparagus spear for me! ๐Ÿ˜‹ - Duchess_SMK  5617.3 #14 8:48AM
Hmm... That probably IS why..hehe. I will order a few skewers in your honor and give one to Pikarich..... ok maybe just half - GrumpyPirateDad  1783.7 #68 9:19AM
Very interesting post. I have wanted to go on this a very long time, for some reason it just never happens! I do think its very beautiful, and love to see it on the river and in pics. Thanks for sharing. :) - piratelife4me  799.2 #193 8:47PM

Good morning! This day in Disney history, June 3rd, 2011: Disneyland officially launches Star Tours โ€“ The Adventures Continue w/a gala ceremony in Tomorrowland. I love star tours 2 and found some secrects that cannot be posted on mw but if you ride with me I can share some with you ,hahaha anyways star tours 2 has 2 openings,2 first planet scenes,3 chracter holographic sequences, and 3 final ending scenes. mix and match this makes it a total of 54 versions. What i CAN share with you is disney left the number 1401 with is the shuttle you board on the spaceport is the same one with r2 and c-3po in the main entrance room. our pre captain rex is found in the queue line but is labeled as defective and if you listen to him closely he will spark every few minutes and speak a line from the old star tours. There are two hidde mickeys in the line , one is from the luggage scanner and the second is on the video moniter hallway every now and then r2 appears and tops ,turns and pulls out two arm and turns them into a circle sideways making a hidden mickey from a few seconds. before officially relaunching disney had a contest to ap to ride star tours and even today even after entering every last contest open to ap have not won yet. they estimated about 100,000 ap previews with cm previews too.thank you - pikarich  2687.5 #36 10:31AM
And I can add to this! The original flight attendant with the funky hair is actually now in the scene where everyone is buckling their seat belts with her grandchildren! How cool is that?!?! - MrsSchnooks  2703.3 #35 10:41AM
thank you mrsS , there are alot in this ride alone =>. we sooo need to ride this => - pikarich  2687.5 #36 10:44AM

We were there June 3rd! We were close by the SW Ceromonies and I took a bunch of pics for MW. Also disneygirl19, my daughter sat next to Carrie Fisher (supposedly) on a bench and took a pic for MW. There was a MW debate if it was her or not. Got some LE pins for once for us and MWer too! Overall a very fun hectic day. Love opening days! :-) - PrincessDuckie  719.2 #217 11:57AM

I miss the mine train! While I love BTMRR, I have so many wonderful memories of riding the mine train with my parents. As a kid, my parents and I took road trips every year and the mine train was such a great reminder of some of the amazing sites we had seen. The cave as you enter BTMRR is a tribute to the mine train, with the glowing stalagmites, stalactite (yes, that's how it's spelled!) and springs. The whole area was incredible, with the pack mules and stagecoaches! It, along with IASW and POTC were my mom's favorites....they were entertaining but not roller-coasters! IASW has not been a favorite of mine, although I love it at Christmas. But it was a must every trip with my mom! My fondest recollections involve the later years when my dad and my daughter would nap on it while mom and I sang along with the soundtrack! I vaguely remember the animation building...I preferred rides at that age! - Gia  801.8 #190 11:21AM

Good morning. I liked the Mine Train a lot when I was young. The Geysers smelled at lot better at Disneyland then at Yellowstone. Enjoyed the bears fishing and back scratching on a tree. Good morning & happy Memorial Day! A very special THANK YOU to all our soldiers & veterans on MW! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ This day in Disney history, May 27th, 1977. Another awesome memory! A few of us who were attending UCI at the time, ditched classes (and right before finals!) to ride Space Mtn. on opening day! No lines back then so we rode it over and over again. We were given free tshirts (I still have mine, just don't know where it is) and bumper stickers commemorating opening day. No music back then, and the queue had windows where those waiting in line could see the "rockets" zooming around. When I was hired as a CM the following year we had a tour of the attraction then rode it with the lights on...which is quite scary! The tracks seem soooo close to each other! The best memories I have are riding it with my dad...seeing him with his hands in the air and laughing made it even better. - Gia  801.8 #190 11:38AM

๐ŸŽถBorn on a mountaintop in Tennessee...๐ŸŽถ ๐ŸŽถDavy...Davy Crockett, King of the wild frontier! I remember watching the show. Fun memories! I'm pretty sure I saw Pinocchio that first year I was there at Christmas time with my whole family in 1983. I definitely remember that Mickey Mouse theater, too. Loved it, but I love Pinocchio more. So that was a good change. Thank you for another trip down memory lane, Duchess! ๐Ÿ˜˜ - MeridaFan  3261.1 #27 10:24AM

Thanks for all of this great info! I especially loved reading about the Pinocchio attraction...I never knew any of that before. My kids love to run around Pirate's Lair so I don't mind the change since that's where we have some fun memories with them since they were really young. ๐Ÿ˜Š - MinnieMousewife  737.4 #212 10:06PM

Good morning & Happy Mothers Day to all the MW Mamas! This day in Disney history, May 12th, 1956. The Main Street Horseless Carriage begins operating @ Disneyland. It was the 1st vehicle to run w/out the use of horsepower, & I mean the four-legged kind. At that time, there were three other vehicles in operation, all horse drawnโ€ฆthe Fire Wagon, Street Car, & Surrey. All were designed by Disney   More...
So cool! And Happy Mother's Day! Yes I've been on all the Main Street vehicles at one time or another! They certainly add to the charm of Main Street. My favorite has always been the Omnibus on the top level!!! So fun! I love the sounds of the motor and the horn of the cars going down the street. With the music, sights and sounds... That's what Main Street U.S.A. is all about! Thank you SMK! What a great part of Disney history! - IMissDisney  1195.5 #111 8:24AM

Thank you so much for this amazing post, as she is truly someone to be honored. I have had the fortune of meeting Alice and Marc on three occasions and they were the most gracious people, who were incredibly touched by the kind words and compliments from people. The last time I saw them was three weeks before he passed away and he was telling me stories of when he worked on HM and she was having to lovingly finish his sentences for him. I have the biggest soft spot for them, out of all the imagineers, and it is just wonderful seeing this post, thank you again!โค - Nala  366.6 #538 4:16PM

Good morning! This day in Disney history, May 8th, 1930. "Frolicking Fish" , a Silly Symphony short directed by Burt Gillett, is released. The title tells it all here, until the festivities are interrupted by a "scary" octopus. To watch: http://is.gd/YaVhWP
thanks! My kids were glued to the screen watching it just now. - CallMeFlower  415.7 #453 7:00AM
Love to hear that! Thank YOU! - Duchess_SMK  5617.3 #14 7:54AM
I love these early animations. I noticed the animators worked on synchronizing the music and sounds with the animation. This was such a new medium at the time and animators were often in unknown territories of drawing, art, and music. It's so cool to see how this developed into what became Disney animation. Thank you SMK for taking us back to another great day in Disney history!! - IMissDisney  1195.5 #111 7:09AM
From what i read, it marks a turning point in animation style. Beforehand, characters would start & stop almost mechanically. Norm Ferguson (one of the animators) developed a style where the characters never completely stopped, but when one part would stop another part would start moving, making the whole movement much more fluid. Disney liked the effect so much he made all the other animators study Ferguson's style. - Duchess_SMK  5617.3 #14 7:53AM
Oh thank you for that! Walt always looked for innovative techniques. he was a pioneer! You're a wealth of Disney knowledge! - IMissDisney  1195.5 #111 8:09AM
These are so fun to watch always! Thanks for another awesome history post Duchess! ๐Ÿ˜Š - MinnieMousewife  737.4 #212 6:01PM
