My sweet 8 year old brother in law just got diagnosed with type one diabetes to cheer him up we are planning a trip for him in October is there a way to get nutrition facts for foods inside Disneyland so he can still eat some of the foods in the park? How do those that have diabetes manage it while in the park besides the obvious of packing snacks ect

I was diagnosed at four. If they haven't already, his parents should talk to his doctor about an insulin pump. But that's a whooole other topic. With him being so young, he may or may not be on a ratio insulin regimen. If he's not, talk to the dr before the trip and see if they can give him a rate for correcting for carbs/blood sugars. This way he doesn't haven't to be the only one not eating a churro. Myfitnesspal.com has nutrition info including carb counts for lots of the items found at Disneyland, and a quick google search will usually find the rest. Also keep in mind that there are lots of low/non-carb goodies at dl: pickles, bacon-wrapped asparagus and turkey legs are a few of my favorites. Make sure you take a glucagon kit. All that walking can do a number on blood sugars! Hopefully you won't need to use it, but if you do, it might be a good idea to head to first aid afterwards since they can cause nausea for up to an hour after. Remember that first aid will store anything (like insulin) that needs to be kept cold, though honestly most brands are fine for 24-48 hours without refrigeration. If he's going to be with a large group of kids, I'd say that for me the biggest thing at this age is to make sure he still feels like a normal kid. A little tact and sneakiness goes a long way! Finally, especially if you're going for multiple days, remember that the preparedness needs to extend past the park. Almost every trip, I have a low blood sugar in the middle of the night, so I keep apple juice and fruit snacks right next to my bed. And I always make sure I have my insurance cards and doctors phone numbers, just in case. I'm sorry for the super long post...but I know how lonely this disease can feel. People lump it together with type 2 but it's entirely different! So please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions.  - LittleAprilShowers  562.7 #338 2:08PM

Excellent advice. Disney can be hard to find whole foods vs all the carbs and sugary stuff that the park is flooded with.  - Plumiegirl  9163.4 #3 6:39PM
My daughter is 22 now but was 9 at dx.... I just wanted to add childrenwithdiabetes.com is a community with a wealth of lnowledge.... My daughter is on a pump but in the early days of multiple daily injections we just had to learn how her body handled the day. Many times we weren't prepared that a thrill ride would drop her sugar and I would run to a Coke cart to get a soda. Having plenty of "free food" with you will be good as well as what you plan to use for lows.  - HalfCaff  437.9 #462 2:20PM

I wish him the very best and my heart goes out to him for sure! One of my best friends and college roommates was diagnosed when we were 10 and her little boy when he was 4. I know it's so difficult but definitely possible to manage while at the parks and you've received some wonderful advice here.Β  - MinnieMousewife  886.5 #188 2:31PM

Is it true that if you do the dining package at river bell terrace you can watch fantasmic from the chairs and tables outside? I have a back injury and was going to pay for blue bayou but sitting on the ground(even padded) won't work with my new disability so the chairs would be fantastic

My husband and I did the desert and fantasmic last year so idk if it's still the same but when you reserve the preferred viewing for fantasmic you get to sit in chairs and they give you desert and whatever you want to drink like hot chocolate then you watch fantasmic right there - hendrixfamily  0.7 #0 8:33PM
They don't do that any more I wish they did! They actually I heard got rid of premium viewing and now it's a fast pass meal with a cushion to sit on the ground. I loved premium viewing it was so fun  - excmdlgurl  296.1 #875 8:58PM
Yeah I really miss that option as well. I don't mind curb sitting but on the ground is difficult. I loved the dessert and chair plus you could stay there and watch the fireworks!!! - stanvoodoo  7.9 #11989 9:27PM
We did it in May.  They say that you can't  but if you are not done with your meal then they will let you.  We got to finish our meal, dessert while watching Fantasmic  and they told us about the new fireworks show too.   - LuvsDisney4ever  16.6 #7543 9:44PM
it would be great to sit at river belle,  total drag.  with your back issue,  get a wheelchair,  and use it as needed.  like during a show.  and park it for the minutes or hours when you can walk.  i have not had to use a cane in over a year,  but any day the pain can come back.  I have not had to use a cane at the park.  but have gone to fenway park with a cane, crutches and a cast on my foot!  make use of anything that will make your trip easier to deal with. - MsTikiMermadam  368.3 #579 9:54PM

Do you guys think they will have fall hotel room discounts this year? My extended family has received some news concerning my 8 year old brother in law and to turn a sad situation into happy we want to take him to Disneyland in October for Halloween since he's never been. Hotel prices at the Disney resort hotels are giant right now

Yes, they post the discounted rates by quarter, or so I was told by a hotel CM. This is what I did, based on her recommendation: I booked my room at the Grand Californian for November several months early. The rate is insanely high, but she said when the discounted rates are posted, to call the reservation hotline again and have the discount applied to my existing reservation. I believe you have 5 days before your reservation date, to cancel - just in case.  - DeadliestPassholder  241.5 #1395 10:07AM

So I want to buy a new lens for my camera to capture our upcoming Disney trip especially dark rides I'm looking at a cannon 50mm 1.4 but not sure if that do it. Does anyone have any tips of best lens for low light?

50mm is good for portraits at about Β 5 ft away. With my t5i I use a tamron 17-55 2.8 with my ISO set at 12800, that is my all around lens & does great In dark & light but it depends on your camera as much as the lens - UTDISNEYFAMILY  1627.8 #96 7:27PM

So this sounds silly BUT if anyone has any special tips on how to make the Matterhorn a little bit of a smoother ride please share!

you just lean forward thats all you wont feel anything. hold on to the railing front and just lean forward  - Hendizl  2655.5 #44 1:37PM
This. - LuvsTigger  1497.3 #101 2:17PM
I find that if I just let go it is smoother- same with Indiana Jones.  I don't hold on, I just relax.  It helps avoid the strain.   - Thumper13  488.8 #402 1:40PM

I don't sit with my back against the seat. I sit more forward and place my hands on the rest of the seat in front of me. I don't get that bone jarrying nearly as much when I sit that way. - Lelundrial  571.3 #334 3:25PM
I sit Indian style (I'm Cherokee so I can say it lol) And I have no trouble with the bumps sitting comfy - FoolishMortal138  357.0 #610 3:33PM

So honestly I'm thinking of bringing cushions in a backpack for riding the Matterhorn. I had back surgery and am super tall. I could maybe do without but not smart. Do you think cms would let you put a cushion behind your back before you put on your seatbelt?

I don't think if I had back surgery I would even consider going on it. Its never going to be a smooth ride. I wouldn't risk it.  - ocmommy  346.0 #641 2:04PM

So advice! I NEED a Disneyland trip ASAP unfortunately I gotta save a little. Do I go ahead and book our trip at the grand now? Or wait until the fall deals come out and book then? I'm thinking October or November trip :)

Book now, if deals come out they will adjust the price. - richiii3  676.9 #269 2:59PM
Agree, book it now that way you get the dates and room you want.  - CoachDisney  93.5 #3576 9:24PM
book soon. We just booked for middle of October with ourDVC membership and there were no availabilities for Grand or Disneyland and very few for paradise pier. With the 60 year going on and normal stuff as well don't be surprised if you might have problems getting the rooms you want. - disneychef  8.2 #0 10:35PM
Just be sure to stay on top of it...they won't tell you if the price goes down.  Just periodically check the website for promo rates and call when you see one.  They're very cool about adjusting...but I agree...book now for the best room you can afford and hope for the best (I do this every year!). - msdizmaui  645.0 #289 12:41AM
I always book when I know I'm going. Then I just check the site daily to see if any offers come up.  If they do, I call and the cast member adjusts pricing.   If you wait, the room might not be available  - fab5  150.0 #2642 5:41AM
