You know I really have to agree with Dave. The value that you receive with the AP is well worth the price. I love how the parks are new and exciting and there are new attractions and things to do. My only hope is (Obi Won) j/k... My only hope is that they don't eliminate the payment option. This will make the decision easy on whether or not we renew as a family
A long time ago in a Galaxy far far away was a theme park called Disneyland. In the 1990s Disneyland had a major drop in regualr attendance to Disneyland and only offered one type of pass, a premium pass that was 150 then raised to 200 for only ONE park. Because of the declining attendance and lack of Annual Passholders flocking to the parks, mind you these were the days where the was no Rancho Santa Margarita, Irvine was still pretty much fields, no irvine spectrum, everything north of the 15, 91 was cows and no homes, you get what I'm saying they started to do promos and new pass levels to incite people to get to the parks more and even did such things as nighttime shopping passes during Christmas, then the famous 2fer tickets. Well Disney really thought that opening a second park would really boost attendance and be a big smash hit and we all know how that went for 10 years. They did everything they could to get people to come to the parks and created 99 dollar passes, get in free on your bday, give a day get a day, they had promos all year around esp for the locals to just get people in the door for a mediocre experience. From the time frame of 2000 to 2011 Disneyland opened two new attractions buzzlight year and Nemo which pretty much was a refurb of an old attraction. They actually had closed down restaurants in the parks, there were no major of any of the lands, two new parades no new stage shows, reduction in characters in the park and a new firework show for the 50th that they still use. Then you have DCA over that time frame..What happened over there, nothing at all for the most part, it was the same park that lacked in every possible category and the only entertainment they had was the Aladdin show and some street performers and the only thing that could draw locals was brining back ELP but as soon as that was over they left. .These were the final years for Eisner...Since 2010 here is what we have been given...Carsland, 3 attractions, two shows 5 characters. Buena Vista Street featuring two shows, street characters and the fab 5 and a 4 star dining experience, World of color, The Little Mermaid attraction, 3 atmosphere shows, daily live music at the paradise gardens, a refrub off all the entire area, Redwood creek also got a nice redo and updated to get rid of that Brother Bear movie that nobody has seen and replaced it with a Pixar hit of UP with a stage show....Then lets go over to Disneyland....Since 2010 we have a brand new Star Tours experience, new summer time firework show, Princess Fantasy fair, 6 daily character shows, a new parade that is actually very good, a brand new wonderful stage show Mickeys map, diferent celebrations each month for such things as Greek, Valentines, etc etc (BTW those wont be limited time magic next year they will be part of new traditions). Now that DCA is finally where they want it your going to start hearing about more new things unveiled this summer for Disneyland like the new Tomorowland and other things as well....Pretty much everyone was conditioned to pay a lower price for sub-par product and now you are getting 300% more band for your buck with all of the new things the parks have to offer Well now the parks are at a place where the demand to get in is at an all time high and its both parks. Not only are you locals wanting to come at record numbers but people are traveling from all over the world again to visit the parks because there is something here again that makes people want to visit. For fun and games, go look on the AP website and take the number of visits you have made in a year and divide it by the total price of your Annual pass, its pretty low for a lot of us who go a lot. For instance if I go 100 times a year its about 6.79 dollars a visit., not bad!! I know its not easy for a lot of us continue to get passes as it keeps increasing but you have to take a look at some of what I said. The demand out weighs the supply and increasing prices is the only way to cut back attendance and make your visits more enjoyable while at the same time they can keep coming up with new exciting shows and attractions that keep us coming back year after year and not leaving us with a stale product. I guess we should all be grateful that we live in Southern California and are surrounded by so many other things to do such as enjoy the beaches, the parks we have, the mountains, Knots, Magic Mountain, Sea World, the zoo the banana stand,...Ok I have writer cramp - Dave  10834.4 #2 10:54AM

That's exactly what I was thinking! Word for word! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ No but seriously, that is very well put and VERY true! - SPandEvLover  2622.8 #36 11:03AM
We don't live in SoCal but if APs were cheaper we would have them every year. But they're not, which is a bummer on one hand but I feel lucky to be able to go to DL at all...I really do. Of course I wish APs were cheaper but it really is Supply/Demand just like you explained earlier. So to me it makes sense even though I'm not excited about it. I am impressed with this write up BTW, very thorough. 😊 - MinnieMousewife  725.6 #202 11:07AM
THISπŸ‘†!!!! Perfectly stated! Yes, increases are tough, but you get what you pay for. It is unfortunate that it will cause a strain for some...but remember that there are people who have NEVER experienced DL. Gas prices go up, food prices go up, car prices go up....it's life! And yes to figure out your # of visits in one year. Then ask yourself "is it worth it". Consider how much you spend on movies, Starbucks, per year...when you add it all up, was it worth it? - Gia  801.8 #179 11:10AM
Can we tack a comment to top of the page? This says it all! Thanks Dave! - secretagentangel  1198.3 #104 11:10AM

I don't get it. Can you repeat that, please? - Slotherini  1053.1 #129 11:22AM
Very well stated. I'm okay with the price increase. It's still a great value for the amount of enjoyment we get from our passes. - vernswifevickie  399.4 #472 11:24AM
Exactly what I've been thinking. I know the high price is a bummer but there have also been so many special AP offerings- previews of new attractions, movie screenings, etc. it comes down to a decision of value to the indiviual person. Plus, if DL was not having fantastic attendance than the price wouldn't be what it is. It's supply and demand. Rather than complain just decide if it's worth it. If not, don't buy a pass. If it is, find a way to save the extra money from other places in your budget. Think of how much some people spend on Starbucks (or other coffee places) in a month and then a year. Cut out a couple trips there a week and you could pay for any pass you wanted. - LilSterner  4310.7 #19 11:42AM
"Like" x 1000. Hopefully this will keep the price increase from turning into a crab fest on here. - Linzee  773.2 #189 11:56AM
I understand what you are saying. But not all of us live in Southern California. When I go, I have to pay for a hotel. I have to pay for food. We like to have a good time on vacation, so we have stayed at the DLR exclusively for every visit over the past 10 years. Carsland and all those other changes are wonderful, of course, but since we do not go every week like many of you locals, we don't get tired of things the way many of you might. I was never aware there were different fireworks shows, for example. It's all just fireworks to me. And we enjoy them. Same with parades. We like the parade, even if we aren't aware of what it is called. I think it's definitely a different park experience for those who go frequently and those of us who do not. Of course, a $20 or $30 increase isn't going to break us, it just would Have been nice if they had waited another year, especially after last year's huge increases. We had a good time this year. It was fun seeing all the new stuff, as well as all our old favorites. And Disney will certainly not go bankrupt without those of us who don't go back for a long while. There are always people there waiting to take our place. Supply and demand, as you say. I just miss the more affordable pass prices, as most of us do. - MeridaFan  3185.5 #27 12:02PM
I agree with these comments. As long as the price increases help with the crowds, I think it makes sense. I do think the experience and in particular the AP experience has really improved over the years (it seems everyone else feels the same - hence the off the charts attendance levels). I feel very lucky and privileged to live in So. Cal. We will only take a hiatus for awhile as our little man turns 3 next year and it is tough to start paying for 4 passports vs. 3 passports! They're so little I feel like we can take a break for awhile and come back with renewed/increased excitement. Although I may go through withdrawal and change my mind. :) On another note, how do I edit the post - it appears my So Cal Select price was wrong and it went up by only $10 vs. $30, to $279 - sorry about that folks! - QueenMiranda  386.3 #488 12:08PM
and Dave - toph  2416.6 #41 12:10PM
I completely agree! Yeah, it's a mighty large chunk of change to get Premium Passes for our family of 5 but they are worth it and we always find a way to come up with the money every year. - Autoalice  156.6 #2440 12:24PM
I think also what a lot of people fail to understand is how a big company works like this. Disney as you know is spread out all over the place from Theme Parks,to cruise lines and to T.V, Movies, Music, Stores, it goes on and on. Well each of those some may say Departments are ran as their own companies and responsible for their own profits and losses within the umbrella of the entire company. It even goes a step further as each department within Disneyland is managed that way as well and has their own budgets and even though the attractions themselves dont have tickets or a cash register, there is a number that is associated per guest that visits that attraction in a day, how many guests go on within a day, so on and so.So for instance when a movie like John Carter which had a budget of 300 million tanks at the box office yes its going to affect the over all company but what is going to get hit hardest is that division of the company. Now that the parks are brining in more revenue it enables them to provide more and more for us as consumers for years to come. If they were just willy nilly raising prices and taking more and more away than you wouldnt see myself or a lot of others renewing. I think its a shame but what this is going to turn into is Disneyland being more of a once or twice a year event instead of a weekly thing but I think we will all be ok and find other fun things to do - Dave   10834.4 #2 12:29PM
Well said. I think the price is well worth it and we come from NorCal! So we make to the parks about 10 times a year (sometimes more). - PrincessLeia  285.9 #867 12:36PM

Hahaha. Awesome Dave. Now I'm mad our post and conversation got removed last night. Haha. People.... Prices change, things get better. Disneyland is a luxury, NOT an entitlement! It is a company to make money. Yes they make out dreams come true, but the reason they cost so much is because they are the best! If it wasn't the best, you wouldn't pay those prices! (ie, knotts, sea world, long beach aquarium, magic mountain, universal studios). If you want cheaper go to those places. - sunshinegates  637.8 #249 2:05PM

After finishing my business class, I have seriously been thinking about doing that. - Lelundrial  439.6 #417 2:26PM
Well it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks the payment plan should be discontinued. Like others have said Disneyland is a luxury, not a right. Plain and simple: you can either afford it or you can't. It shouldn't be up to Disney to bend over backwards to make things cheaper just because you live nearby and have a big family and want visit every couple of weeks. If you can't afford the upfront cost of a pass, do what everyone else does...visit once a year. And make a nice big trip of it. - NotNKansasAnymor  204.9 #1782 2:01PM
Seriously? Disney has a brain and knows that the local ppl will come more often. Why not make it a way that makes it easier for them. So you're telling me that if you lived close, you wouldn't take advantage of the payment option? I can pay upfront if I wanted, but if I'm given this option, why not take advantage of it?! - caramiapoohAKAface  2802.1 #33 2:12PM
Disney DOES make it easy, it's called the payment plan. Lol! I live 20 minutes away, I have a Premier Pass and I visit about once every two weeks, sometimes more, and I pay for it upfront. I do that because I can AFFORD it. Why would I want to spend a year of my life being in debt to Disney? To me, one payment once a year = hassle free. - NotNKansasAnymor  204.9 #1782 2:21PM
Paying a few bucks a month is just an easier deal for most people. And with no interest charged, who wouldn't want to do it that way? I think it's a great option and hopefully they keep it! - MeridaFan  3185.5 #27 2:30PM
I think you're assuming Disney wants the parks to be less crowded, which they might if there was no payment plan. If they did do away with payment plans, you can pretty much count on much larger increases to fill the void. - Gia  801.8 #179 2:34PM
I guess I better remember this when purchasing my next car or house...only get it if I can AFFORD it and pay it all upfront!!! 😜😜😜 - caramiapoohAKAface  2802.1 #33 2:37PM
@gia; I (as I said above) would be happy to pay more (a lot more) for an improved product. - georgieporgie  180.2 #2090 2:41PM
You're right Kansas! They should also cancel payment plans on cars, mortgages, year long apartment leases. All of them should be gone. Can't afford it up front, find something cheaper. 😏 - Waites4DodgerEars  962.9 #145 5:13PM

Pretty soon there will be a special GAC card to stand in line to get a GAC card....SMH
I think the way to deal with this is that the guest is given a return/fast pass based on the current wait time. For example if the wait for Indy is 60 mins they get a return card that is good 60 to 120 mins from now. This still allows the guest to bypass the line but makes cheating less attractive since the guest doesn't get immediately to the front of the line - mike714  338.1 #608 9:08AM
Not a bad idea, they currently do that for the Princess meet & greet in Fantasy Faire. It worked out great for us because my back was killing me when lil chica wanted to see them. So we were able to sit nearby and have a snack until it was our turn. - LBChica  2005.8 #54 9:49AM
I thought that's what they did at RSR, Toy Story and Star Tours? - Linzee  773.2 #189 10:00AM
Linseed, you get a return time for RSR. Toy Story you get on at the exit and Star Tour you go through fast pass line. No return time for last two. - HalfCaff  374.7 #512 10:04AM
*Linzee* sorry - HalfCaff  374.7 #512 10:05AM
ahhh things have changed in the last few years since we had to use one. Thanks for the update!! - Linzee  773.2 #189 10:06AM
Actually, it's not the exit at ToyvStory. It's just a special handicap line.... your welcome - HalfCaff  374.7 #512 10:11AM
This is what they did for my friend and I for the Princess/Prince meet and greets during True Love Week. I thought it worked pretty well. - JustCantWait  1114.8 #118 10:20AM
Time to enter this into the Disneyland suggestion box. BTW, is there such a thing? - onezerohero  162.2 #2354 10:40AM
Last time I went on TSMM through the GAC entrance, the CM let us slide and allowed us to go in. But he said they are beginning to give out return time passes for TSMM now. - ZeeAlice  615.4 #269 11:39PM
@JustCantWait Well now I am so bummed about the Valentine's meet and greet. I went up to a CM and told him that I had a guest assistance card and couldn't stand in line and asked if I could have just have the autograph and he never offered to give me a pass to come back. Hubby and I sat for 90 minutes just to catch the couples walking in and out. I guess I should've worded my inquiry better but that's good to know now because I've only seen the princesses twice when it was a 5 minute wait. Thanks LBchica and JCW. I love the characters so much and often miss out. - MrsSchnooks  2657.7 #35 12:24AM
The sucky thing about stories like this is that it will give people ideas, many don't know about GACs, but will now. I really hope this doesn't up the GAC abuse and make it more difficult for people who really need and benefit from GACs to get them. - Linzee  773.2 #189 8:42AM
Not necessarily, all that needs to happen is the ADA steps in and tells Disney they can't question anyone. I know that is what happening with public transportation in my town. I have seen dogs that are clearly not medical assistance dogs on the bus. I contacted the company and they informed me that some legislation was passed because of the ADA that they can't ask for any type of proof that it is a medical dog. Disney can decide to start requiring some type of proof of a medical need. Then it takes for some to complain to the ADA about discrimination. Then Disney won't be allowed to question anymore. - Lelundrial  439.6 #417 9:06AM
Still might lead to increased wait times for GAC users due to even more people potentially abusing the system. - Linzee  773.2 #189 9:14AM
Oh I agree with you. I am getting surgery in a few months, and will be on crutches. I am worried about even asking for the GAC, even though I will be legally declared disabled. - Lelundrial  439.6 #417 9:38AM
Everyone tells me that I need to get a pass due to my back, but I'm too embarrassed to get one, so I just suffer through the pain or don't wait in lines that are more than 30 minutes. - RadioMaverick  923.1 #151 9:47AM
Suck it up and go get the pass Mav. You don't always have to use it...at some, like Toy Story you'll get a return time pass. - Linzee  773.2 #189 9:59AM
I usually wait for someone has a pass and piggy back on them. :) - RadioMaverick  923.1 #151 10:24AM
Mav I am in the same boat as you. I have a really bad back, spinal compression problems and bad scoliosis. Standing in line for long time makes my back feel like its on fire but I refuse to get a GAC. I just get as many fast passes as I can and tough out the ones that have long lines with no fast passes (waited 45 minutes for toy story and thought I might die from back pain). By no means am is suggesting you do what I do. I am just to stubborn to get one (even having medical proof). - missmimi90  1363.8 #89 11:54PM
This is exactly what my hubby said and then asked if it's going to make it difficult for me to get mine. What is funny is I always have them make it out for 6 in case we have our friends with us and when it's just hubby and I and I tell the CM that they look at me funny like they are used to it always being parties of 6. - MrsSchnooks  2657.7 #35 12:17AM
I don't understand why people who want to cheat the system dont just come on off peak days!?! there are days in September, january, & february where the park is empty. once in september in the middle of the morning my bf and i were walking through frontierland and we were LITERALLY the only ones there. it was spooky. Abusing a courtesy given to the disabled is disgusting! - missariel33  1309.2 #93 11:59AM
@LeLundrial, when I started with the special assist/GAC pass 20 years ago (only DL then) I had to provide a medical note to verify my son's autism diagnosis. Then after 5 years they said they could not ask for proof anymore. Then there was the use a Wheel Chair go to the front, good for rental income and disney did not seem to mind. I still carry my medical note just to be safe. I do see alot of line abuse but not much I can say. - Plumiegirl  7642.9 #3 1:57PM
About 20 some years ago I went to the movies once and there was a woman there with an assistance dog. Now the dog had on a special vest that had writing on it stating it was an assistance dog. She was still require to show proof of it. Some people don't mind showing medical notes at all. Then there are some that just get up in arms about it. After my surgery last year we were supposed to go to DL while I was on leave. Looking at me no one would have been able to tell that walking or standing for long periods of time was very painful. I would have needed a wheelchair. In the end we ended up not going. I didn't want to get harassed by people, and I know my son would have gotten upset when that happened. - Lelundrial  439.6 #417 2:22PM
