📣Hello out there! Lol, it's like a ghost town in here, and I don't really have anything of particular quality to add, but I thought I'd start a new thread. 😂 How is everyone? I'm just plodding along, doing Pilates, kettlebells and running. It's a great workout combo for me. I'm probably eating a little too much (as per usual) but life is good!
I know!  What happened to our loyal Chubb 33'ers!  I know that Vicki is on FB a lot - I'll have to try to convince her to come back and join us! I'm back in my diet mode.  20 min on the elliptical and 1,000 reps on my "ButtMaster" every day (not sure it does anything but I figure it can't hurt and I might as well do something when I'm on the computer all day!).  I'll be at the park in a little less than 2 months.  Still have my fingers crossed that I lose the last 10 lbs by then!  Oh, and thank you again for your words about the benefit of regular exercise.  I really took them to heart! - msdizmaui  581.7 #287 4:34PM

I am checking in to chub33 for the first time! And it feels weird.  I have always been thin, and never had to worry about my weight.  That was until my son started kindergarten and I gained what I called the "kindergarten 15". I am a stay at home mom so I kind of sat around a bit too much while he was in school. First grade added another 10, and now I need to lose 25 pounds. I barely recognize myself.  I eat healthy, but I don't eat enough- I tend to not eat all day and then have one big meal. I am trying to get better at eating more throughout the day.  I just don't get hungry throughout the day so it is hard. Welcome to chub33!  We all have different goals and plans, but what we have in common is an interest in healthy living and a love of Disney.  I understand what you mean about exercising--I've found that making goals (like signing up for the DL half marathon) helps me stick to a stricter exercise plan.  If I don't have a goal, I tend to either not workout much, or choose workouts that don't really challenge me.  Then I get bored, lol.  So, my advice is to make goals for yourself!  Writing them down really helps, to! - Spoonful_O_Sugar  508.4 #344 10:54PM

One big goal with smaller, manageable goals works best for me (kinda the one step at a time approach).  So, if my overall goal is to finish the half marathon, I set smaller weekly goals for myself.  For example, I had 3 bouts of bronchitis this year (very uncommon for me), so I knew that training for the half would be difficult because my lungs were weaker than they were last year.  My first week's goal was just to jog 1/2 mile without stopping, going as slowly as I needed, and walk the rest of my workout. Five weeks ago, I really struggled with that.  Then, I focused on increasing the walk : jog ratio, and now that I'm stronger, I'm focusing on speed work and longer distances each week.  So, if your goal is walking and weight loss, then you might start out walking a certain number of miles, and as you progress, play with speed, distance, or add in hills on different days of the week.  Training for races really keeps me going--it's a tangible goal. I recommend finding a walking buddy, if possible, and signing up for something like a 1 mile fun run/walk, 5K fun run/walk, or a cancer walk a thon (or other kind of fundraiser). Any runners have recommendations for hydration belts? I'm looking for something comfortable and as streamlined as possible that will hold enough water for me and my dog (24-40 ounces will work, I think). We recently moved, and we were living in an area with lots of cool hiking/running paths and a golf resort which had ice water every mile, available year round. How's everyone doing? I'm not eating well or exercising lately, but I've made some changes and I'm much less stressed and anxious than I used to be. Although I've struggled with chest colds this year, I'm actually feeling really happy and relaxed. Now, time to get back to exercising! I've lost about 28 of the 40 lbs that I want to lose this year.  Like I've posted, these last 15 are a bitch!  But I will stay with it!!! I also had a plan to start "running" (if you could call it that) in the morning with the goal of being able to run/jog a mile (we have a path in my park that's exactly a mile) without having to stop to walk.  That hasn't happened yet.... Chaotic until the end SoS, which is why I'm happy to be gone.  An employee who was fired for attendance issues (drama queen who called in sick and/or was late more than any human on earth) filed a complaint against me.  One of her issues...I hosted a baby shower for another employee but wasn't "helping" with the one she was planning for herself!  Unbelievable.  No wonder I gained 40 lbs!!! - msdizmaui  581.7 #287 3:15PM

I had a really hard time getting my fuel right for long distance runs, and I did a lot of research and trial/error to see what could make things easier for me.  I found that a half bagel with peanut butter and half of a banana works really well for me prior to my run (about 1/2 hour before). I always drink a lot of water, but I found that electrolytes really important.  I occasionally use gels or blocks (don't take those with a sports drink--use water)--But I've made it through long runs without them just fine.  Everyone has slightly different needs based on their body chemistry, and you also need to be careful not to overhydrate, too, because that can be really dangerous.  Some people don't have much of a problem, but last year, I really struggled to find the right balance for my runs that were over 7 or 8 miles.  I use Accelerade, Gatorade or Powerade (I'm not picky) during runs, but I also found that a big glass of coconut water, a banana, and a little salty snack, like pretzels and string cheese, afterward really helps me recover.  You'll probably need to try different things to find the right balance.   - Spoonful_O_Sugar  508.4 #344 2:19PM

Yes, try to stay positive.  A few of us have had similar experiences when we've trained for runs, so you're not alone.  Remember that you're building muscle, which is denser than fat tissue.  You might actually be losing fat and gaining muscle (which is FANTASTIC for your overall health) but not seeing much difference on the scale.  Keep it up: you're doing great! - Spoonful_O_Sugar  508.4 #344 1:08PM

I always do water, kale, spinach, and a banana as the base, then I add different fruits: I like pineapple with tangerines or blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.  Sometimes, we add yogurt, almond milk, or protein powder.  We get the frozen fruit and huge bags of spinach and kale (then we freeze the veggies, too) from Costco, and that saves a lot of money!  - Spoonful_O_Sugar  508.4 #344 8:45AM

Question for those who have done a DL race: I wasn't able to do a 10k this summer, so I don't have proof of time and I'll be in one of the last corrals. In your experience, have the aid stations ever run out of the sports drinks or the blocks? Just wondering if I need to bring some of my own stuff (blocks and electrolyte tablets), or if I can count on those things being available for the people  More...
I would bring your own. They have powerade at several stations and gu gels. They haven't had blocks at any of the Disney races I've done. I bring my own blocks and electrolyte tablets. I've never trained for something like that so I wouldn't know. I sort of want to do the run/walk training, but my dog is getting older (he'll be 12 this December) and he's more into sniffing than running. I did okay tonight, but I really don't want to push him (and I'm such a pathetic dog mommy that I wouldn't think of going out without him). I did get on my elliptical tonight for the first time in months. Only did 20 minutes - I guess I could look at that as a workout and push to go longer and longer. Great job SoS. I bring my pup with me for my short runs and I stopped off at home to get some Gatorade and picked him up for the last 2 miles yesterday. It breaks my heart having to leave him! You are so right that is is more a mental challenge than a physical one. I agree with PQB about changing up your routine so it doesn't get boring. I also try to look back at how far I have come. And also just browse for motivation on Pinterest or some of the run club pages on Facebook. That will usually get my juices going and make me want to get back out there. Congrats on your 10 miles! Woohoo!! I'm so excited for you SOS! The DL Half last year was my first ever half marathon. I did other 5K and 10K races beforehand, but I wanted Disney to be my first half. The 5K and 10K races were my "practice" races and I learned a lot from them so I definitely recommend doing some of those (for example- learning what to eat or what not to eat, which shoes work and which don't, etc.). In my training, the most I ran was about 12 miles so I knew that I could handle the half. I will say that the runDisney races spoiled me though. Now I'm very dissatisfied with the races here in Vegas. Besides the DL Half, I also ran the Wine & Dine Half in WDW and the Tinker Bell Half a few days ago. If you have anymore questions, just let me know! I'm doing the Dumbo Challenge so maybe we can have a Chub 33 meet up! If you have fb, check out the #Team runDisney group. My post-workout breakfast! I'm addicted to this version of a Green Monster smoothie: in a blender, mix kale, spinach, milk (I use cow milk for the protein, but almond milk tastes great and has fewer calories), a touch of vanilla or plain yogurt, and a mixture of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
