Yes, most of the pins that come in "lots" on ebay are mostly fakes. The best way to start is buying any of the starter packs that come with 7 pins. Best for your dollar.

It's really hard sometimes to spot a fake pin. I learned a few quick tips from the writer of the how to spot fake pins book and even when he showed me what to look for it was still hard to tell the difference. What I usually do is go to the disney store outlet and buy a few clearance pins and then take them to trade. - Philliprocks
