Good morning! This day in Disney history, Nov 12th, 1946. Walt Disney's "Song of the South" is released by RKO & debuts at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. The film, based on the books by Joel Chandler Harris, is Walt's first major plunge into live-action filmmaking (although it also contains animated segments). The premiere is sponsored jointly by the Atlanta Junior League and the Uncle Remus Memorial Association. (The film & its songs will later provide the inspiration for the Splash Mountain attractions at Disney theme parks.) The hit song from the film was "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song. Have you seen this film?
Wow it's been awhile since I've watch that. I love your Disney history post I read it every time. Thanks again for sharing! :-) - bigpete

Love this movie, one of the greats! I still have the music on an original vinyl Disney record, that we pull out and listen to :). Our movie broke a number of years back(VHS) and we were told by a CM that they do not sell it anymore in the USA! My In-Laws were in England last year and brought home a copy!! - hatgal76

I have the DVD...I got it at the San Diego Co. Fair a few years ago from a vendor who sells a variety of hard-to-find videos. I remember seeing it first as a child back in the 60's and my grandma explaining to me the non-pc parts and why they were considered unacceptable. I wish Disney would re-release it..it can be a great learning tool. - Gia

Love this movie. I have a DVD copy as well. Saw it for first time in the theater (early 80's). This movie should be totally restored and released. Spare no expense! With all the new technology for restoration, this movie would look awesome! They could easily make the animation fade-ins into 3D. - mightymike10

Now THAT would be neat! ::sigh:: probably not possible though. With its current status as being viewed as "politically incorrect". - Duchess_SMK 3272.7 #11 12:00PM
Thanks to YouTube I was able to view this beautiful movie. My daughter lived it also. I really don't get the contraversial over this movie. Excellent!! - adventurerEnDisneylandia {AED}

I saw this in theater when I was young but not when it was first released since I wasn't alive then. It must have had a rerelease in the 70's. Finally got to see it again this year. - MamaRoo
