This day in Disney history, Sep 8th, 1998. Disneyland's Submarine Voyage attraction closes. Starting in June 1959, the eight submarines: Nautilus, Triton, Sea Wolf, Skate, Skipjack, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Ethan Allen took 38 Disneyland guests at a time to the "North Pole." The only change to the attraction came in the mid-1980s, when the Cold War gray submarines were repainted yellow. Do you remember this attraction? I miss the old Submarine Voyage with they grey subs. As a kid it was so cool to be able to go underwater in a sub. - ScooterMike  1959.8 #35 2:15PM
I bet! As long as you didn't get stuck riding with someone who had eaten chili for lunch I suppose. 😷😂 - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 3:26AM
This was one of the only attractions I remember riding at Disneyland when I was very little. I wish i could experience it now. - TheNewTrent  514.2 #228 8:02PM
Do you like the Nemo ride now? you must have been pretty young for the subs. Thanks Trent for commenting! - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 3:28AM
Before I got my pass last year, my last trip was in 1996. I don't remember much about it, probably because I was around 4. I can't say I like the Nemo ride now. - TheNewTrent  514.2 #228 3:25PM

Yes! And I remember the mermaids. - MrsSchnooks  572.2 #193 3:30AM
Lucky! So are you an early bird or a late nighter MrsSchnooks? - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 3:32AM
Both! My husband works 12am-8:30am so I sleep 4 hours in the afternoon with him than 4 hours when he's gone. - MrsSchnooks  572.2 #193 7:16AM
Thanks for posting! My mom used to tell me about the mermaids, and I always wished I could have seen them. I don't remember much about what they were like before Nemo, maybe because they weren't our favorite! - 7mouskedoodles  161.1 #2138 7:23AM
This was my moms absolute favorite attraction. This is one attraction I do remember. Thanks for the history once again. - RickChavez  2184.1 #30 11:27PM
Thanks Dutchess, and it was great meeting you today. Oh yes, I remember it well. I did not like when they renamed and painted them.I do remember the live mermaids,I have 8mm movies of them on VHS. And my uncles best friend when they were in the navy home on leave from their ship in Long Beach, jumped in and swam out to the mermaids. He was drunk, arrested and handed over to the shore patrol and taken back to his ship and was greeted as a hero. - splashphotoCM  880.9 #101 11:57PM
I actually remember this Vaguely on my one visit as a kid lol..Thanks for this Post SMK! - PrinceTeaJack  786.3 #118 3:05PM
Yes, I remember. Thanks for posting this! How long was it closed? Did it only reopen as the current Nemo ride? It must have been down for several years then. - meridafan  1034.8 #83 12:54PM
Yes, it was down for several years! It reopened in 2007 as the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. Why did it close in 1998?Disneyland executives at that time considered the attraction too costly to operate in relation to its capacity. - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 1:16PM
The still think the attraction is costly to operate in relation to capacity. There are already rumors of Nemo being removed. - AKMouse  376.5 #364 2:58PM
i do! thanks for posting ;) - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1796.9 #42 1:15PM
💛 - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 3:18AM
Of course I remember these! I liked it as a child, but as I got older, I liked it less and less as it started to feel claustrophic! One thing I don't remember is the live mermaids! But I was thrilled when I could see the fake ones! - Gia  782.1 #120 1:51PM
Im claustrophic as well! Can't do the nemo ride! I wish I woul have seen these live mermaids though! Thanks as always for sharing Gia! Nice meeting you Frday night! - Duchess_SMK  3258.8 #11 3:22AM
I use to work with a lady who was one of the mermaids. I loved hearing all her stories about working there and seeing her face light up. - McQueenGal  255.6 #950 1:59PM
