You could try Priceline's name your own price option...you give then the dates of your stay, price range, area, and star level, and they book a stay for you within those parameters if a hotel is available. The cheapest we've gotten is $35/night at the Travelodge, but we've also been put in the Convention Center Hilton and Holiday Inn several times for under $50/night.
