From what I remember, wasn't Mr Lincoln already playing at the park and a second show was made for the Illinois pavillion for the '64 World's Fair, making it the only Disneyland attraction from the Worlds Fair to be playing on both coasts at the same time?  - BaseballMickey_CM  5788.7 #13 12:05AM
It was vice versa. It opened here while it was still playing at the worlds fair. The fair lasted until October I believe.  - IDVandalSkipperCM  2025.4 #53 5:57AM

Duchess_SMK she's great!  I had to get up early to get myself ready for work before taking her to child care. I hope you're doing well!   - IDVandalSkipperCM  2025.4 #53 8:42AM
That explains it. I remember seeing it at the World's Fair in June 1965, and was a bit confused on it opening here the same time. I actually saw all four Disney attractions at the Fair, Lincoln, Small World, Carousel of a Progress and the dinosaurs. So I got an early baptism in Disney! - redsoxcarlos  845.0 #172 8:50AM
Very cool ☝ @redsoxcarlos - MickeyLumboCM  449.6 #409 3:45PM
Also, wasn't while designing Lincoln's face, that the imagineer turned the mask inside out and realized it seemed like the eyes were following him, which then led to DL being the first to have an attraction (Haunted Mansion) with the faces that follow you as you walk by.  design by accident, I always think that is so cool!! - secretagentangel  1199.5 #105 1:17AM
Yep. The illusion is that your mind can't process the light around the negative concaved shape so it compensates by telling you the item is moving instead of the lighting from which you're viewing. Disney actually owns a patent on this design if I recall. - CM_Shadowgamer  2312.7 #46 4:53AM

I remember reading that they do own the patent. It really shows how Walt Disney hired the best people because even when they weren't really trying to design something a certain way they still came up with awesome designs that no one ever thought of!!!!! And thanks Shadowgamer you  always give us the right info and facts to help us learn more! I know you love your job !!!I really envy your working at the park!😍 - secretagentangel  1199.5 #105 3:36PM

Wasn't there also another story with Mr. Lincoln arriving late the World's Fair due to the baseball game? Also, the auctioning pirate in POTC now I think used to be a Lincoln AA too. If you look at the face and beard, it kind of looks like Lincoln.  - BaseballMickey_CM  5788.7 #13 11:38PM

Happy 59th Birthday Disneyland! Great post to remind of how it was. I cannot imagine ONLY 2 boats for the Jungle Cruise- glad they got a few moreπŸ˜‚. That pic of the chairs you mentioned, I liked the shades, above. Though at 101Β°, there does not look like much shade and back then, pretty sure the guests did not bring their CamelBaks. How frightening in Fantasyland😱. That picture of the man trying to get his toddler, I can't place where that is but, goodness, BUSY! Β I think I would have been delighted with walking through the castle and Peter Pan's Flight. Thanks again and have a wonderful day at Disneyland!! πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰πŸ“… cool emoji with DLR's birthdate!! - HandMeAChuzzaImmaFaint  3394.1 #26 6:20AM

Could you imagine wearing a πŸ‘—πŸ‘ πŸ‘  in that weather? πŸ˜– I think that pic with the toddler is outside the main gate, to the right where the stroller rental and kennel is today? Thank you so much for this post about Space Mountain!! I cried so hard when I watched it. I'm not sure if everyone is aware of the main reason why I absolutely love this attraction. Well hear it goes: My dad, who passed away in 2002, loved astronomy. He loved everything including the stars, planets, space shuttles. We would have never ending conversations about this subject. It was his passion. I continued to be passionate about it. My dad worked with the Space program at Collins radio. When I watched this and saw Niel Armstrong I really became emotional. My dad had met him. What an honor to meet such a great man!! Anyways, I don't have to tell you how much Space Mountain means to me. It is THE BEST ride in the universe!!!! Not only for the thrill, but it connects me to my dad!! I believe he loved Space Mountain as much as I did!! Anyways, I will especially make sure I ride it tonight in his honor!! Thanks again!! - Superspacemountainfan  66.6 #3859 3:45PM

You made me cry! Such sweet memories for you! Thanks so much for sharing them with us! 😍 ((hugs))  - Duchess_SMK  5432.3 #14 8:05PM
First let me apologize for my lengthy 2 cents. Ok, so space mnt was closed and completely redone for the two years so it could reopen for Disneyland 50th anniversary, which it did have a soft opening 2 days before. the floor of space mnt was lowered about 20ft more for safety and earthquake safety and the tracks where redone 100 % to the original layout and the trains redone. lost was the glow in the dark trains and slowly some of the windows where closed from the then people mover track and other areas. the ride also got a new soundtrack and a special model was on display inside the opera house which showed the exact layout of space mountain.Did you know that every disneyl park has a space mnt attraction , which our is number 2 built after wdw and different in design and ride vechicles. our space mnt top speed can reach up to 35 mph and there use to be the biggest hidden mickey which is still there in the dark no longer shown but as you came out of the launch tunnel there was a huge 3 rock meteor and a blasted mickey carving on itbut you can only see it if you flash (not from me) of if the lights ever ome on and also as you climb the countdown ramp look on the right side wall and see a hidden donald made out of stars. Turtle crush seen it love it very fun and unpredictable which makes itso much fun and a great ac room indeed - pikarich  2369.2 #44 8:17AM

#live The Fred Gurley is running today! The oldest of all the Disneyland Railroad steam engines! It joined Disneylands fleet on March 28th, 1958. But this engine’s 120-years old! Named after Fred G. Gurley, who was president of the Santa Fe Railway from 1944-1957. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1894.

I loved the skyway. I'm pretty sure it's my cousin's fault it was closed and removed. He would get a little box of rock candy and throw it at people. If he ran out of candy he would try and spit on people. My favorite part of the tiki room is when the ladies drop down and have us sing along. Unless Maynard's there then his intro is my favorite part of the show. I liked the Swiss tree but kids don't know of the movie or the book so it makes since to change it to Tarzan. great post , the longest i waited for this is 60 minutes lol on . the cms do a great job with an average of 40 minutes but 60-90 is ok on busier days.at first i thought fasspass would be great but do a low capacity and 2 vechicles load would make the stand-by line even longer.i have been able to hit over the 300,000 mark with my arm being super soar lol,mr.potatoe head is advance tech too as cameras are able to point out guest to in interact with.the ride had an upgrade when toy story 3 came out replacing the boo-peep pop ballons. throughout the ride are easter eggs that if you trigger correctly will open up higher point targets.the inside of the ride is a tribute to alot of classic board games and others. for japans version when the ride first opened pics where on social medias showing the wait time at 8 and 10 hr long.one fun fact i found in a toy story mania documentary is on the ring toss game it was modified quickly. the original game was programmed to act like real ring toss making it harder to land the rings on the targets, the change was to give the targets a magnetic pull around them making it way easier to land on them. - pikarich  2369.2 #44 9:15AM
You always add so much to my posts! Thanks pikarich! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5432.3 #14 6:34AM

This surely is one of my fav rides in DCA. The queue is great with Mr.PotatoHead as the barker. And thank goodness they put those umbrellas up- we used to have to just stand in the sunπŸ”₯. I don't recall any of that opening day attraction stuff, as we were there. I just remember being in line near Ariel's Grotto and the line no longer moving. We sat down in our spots and waited. After some time, we were finally told the ride had broken down. Then the  line moved again, and stopped. It was really hot that day on the Pier and finally we decided to call it a day after waiting in line for 3 hours. Lesson learned that day, for sure... Go find something else to do and come back later😊😊 thanks Duchess 😘 - HandMeAChuzzaImmaFaint  3394.1 #26 6:40AM
Oh yes! That's right they didn't used to have those 'S! Wow! 3 hours then being told it was broken, now THAT's a bummer! Yes! I couldn't wait that long for anything. I'd have to come back. Especially with kiddos! Thank YOU churro! πŸ‘―πŸ˜˜πŸ’— - Duchess_SMK  5432.3 #14 7:19AM
This is one of my favorites! It would be fabulous to have shorter wait times. However, a 60min. isn't too bad because the line is constantly moving. The bad part is the stinky smell from the plants. My favorite part of the ride is Ham's and the army men. There is just something exciting about being able to throw eggs and break plates! What a fun filled history post! So many wonderful attractions opened and such changes around the Parks! A mere nickel for a bag of Fritos! mmm! I like that! It would be pretty incredible to hear Aunt Jemima singing to me whilst I ate Mark Twain buckwheat pancakes. I wonder what songs were in her line up? The prices at The Silver Banjo, a place I had not heard of, look pretty tempting – I'll take the spareribs plate and a lemonadeπŸ‹ bc I see they do not offer CokeπŸ˜‚. That picture of the Grad kids rubbing their feet is pretty funny and I agree, I'm sure her feet hurt a bit more than his- but gosh the way they are dressed is sooo😍😍!! I also like the snuggle Matterhorn picture... Not sure how easy that was to do with a blazer onπŸ˜‚. I really wish that our high school would have offered it, I definitely would have gone to the grad night and wore probably something totally 80s- maybe pastel dress?? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.  I really like the outfit and pillbox hat on the lady standing next to the Club33 door. So classy. I have never been to Club 33- I would love to see the inside for my love❀️ of history, take in the view on the balcony of NOS and ROA, and perhaps enjoy the food😊😊 (I will just bet that the salmon was delicious – you know I love it, tooπŸ‘―) When I first heard that DCA was going to be made over, I wasn't quite sure because I was so saddened to see the CALIFORNIA letters come down. We always enjoyed taking photos next to the initials of our little churros. When we finally did go to DCA, for the first time, I had tears rolling down my face because of the beauty and how it just looked like it *belonged*.  I was lucky to eat at the Carthay, a year ago, with some wonderful MWers at the Reunion Weekend in the Snow White room. What a spectacular place that was- and so full of detail. As for favorite dish, I'm not sure-I just took it all in, but those cheese biscuits SURE were tastyπŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ LOVE your collage! You and the girls look so cute and they are so little! Thank you very much for such a great history post 😘 - HandMeAChuzzaImmaFaint  3394.1 #26 7:57AM

Thanks again Duchess for such an awesome post.  Thoserestaurants you mentioned were before my time.  I had never even heard of them, but I love the prices.  Haven't had the pleasure of club 33.  Maybe when I win the lottery.   Lol.  As for grad nites I think they were more special back then.  Dressing up makes it a glorious occasion and having the park open all night just for Grads was awesome.  I don't like The way they do it now.  It takes away all the special glory of an all night celebration just with other grads.  Now, it is set up as just a trip to Disneyland.  Lastly, Carsland is a great addition.  However, my most favorite addition is Buena Vista street.  Love the Trolleys, jazz, and rag time dancers.  Character outfits are also very cute!  Thanks again for the wonderful post and good luck with that little bun in the oven that you think may be a trouble maker.  :). My son is 10 now and he was a trouble maker from the start of conception.  However, I love him with all my heart and he keeps me laughing and on my toes.  Lol. :) - Gabster1forDodgers  520.8 #330 10:10AM
My sincere pleasure! So happy you enjoy them! I agree! I love those prices too! πŸ˜‚you don't need to win the lottery, just need to be invited! πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‰ I bet you'll get to go someday you watch! I a also agree with you about the grad nights! The dressing up part made it more fun and special! I could live on BVS if they let me! πŸ˜‚ Love the time period and the music! Thank you so much for the well wishes for my little man on the way! I've accepted the challenge of the trouble maker, hubby's a red head, and all my kiddos are usually born red, you know what that means. πŸ˜‚ thanks again for your reply! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5432.3 #14 5:34AM
My cousin and I used to love to eat at Aunt Jemima's!  We would go there for dinner, even. I don't think we cared what time of day it was. We loved pancakes!  And they had every kind imaginable. I specifically remember those buckwheat pancakes. We thought we were so cool and worldly ordering up pancakes we could never get at home. Haha!  It was a lot of fun back in those days. Great memories for me. 😊. Carsland opening. We were not there that day, but our long planned week long vacation began two days later, on Father's Day. I know I picked up some souvenirs back then. I kinda tend to do that a lot. 😜 This was our first Disney trip in nearly three years. Getting to see Carsland was a bonus!  That Sunday was surprisingly not that crowded. We got fastpasses for RSR and only had about a 20 minute wait in line. Of course, we all thought it was awesome!  We all loved Maters' ride and still do. The kids went on Luigis' Tires. I always wondered why it wasn't a little bit faster.   Reading your list of old sponsors really brings back memories. I remember Frito Lay. I remember Sunkist Oranges. I remember when you could actually get ice cream at the Carnation Cafe!  I remember the Pendleton wool shop in Frontierland that my mom and aunts and grandma would always love to go shopping in and come out with something new and plaid. Sigh. Oh, to go back for just one day and see all those giggling ladies having fun shopping. Or to meet them for some spare change to buy our pancakes while they wait with their men in line for the next Horseshoe Revue show. That was my childhood. And I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Thank you, beautiful Duchess, for another lovely trip down memory lane. 😘 - MeridaFan  3188.2 #28 8:34AM
I'm super bummed out I missed out on the pancake house! I LOVE me some pancakes! You,souvenirs no way? LOL I could totally picture in my mind your walk to the Horseshoe Revue. Such a blessed childhood you had to grow up visiting Disneyland. I hope my kiddos grow up to have such happy memories! Thanks for taking the time to share with us sweetheart! So. Much. Awesomeness in this post!!! I LOVE Alice!! My fave scene is the dancing cards. It makes me kinda dizzy (in a good way) The monarail what fun it was to ride in the front on my very first Disneyland trip! The Matterhorn used to scare the bajeZies outta me as a kid. Now it just is painful to ride. 😒  The subs! In all their Mermaid glory (wish they had been around in the 80's) I only remember the sea monster in this ride, and it smelling like urine 😞. What a great day in history for our beloved park!!!  - PixiePirateMaid  290.0 #839 6:33AM
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer all my questions! It's not often people do that! I agree about the Matterhorn I can't ride it anymore either with my bad back. It's the only place that I know of where you can get a pretzel and use your AP to get a discount(there maybe other places but I don't know. maybe I need another trip there😜) thanks Duchess! I really like riding the Columbia. Going below deck is fascinating. We are still trying to figure out if it is to scale or not. We know the bottom is flat because the ROA is not deep but is it an exact replication of width and length? If it is I can't believe they stayed at sea for so long in such cramped quarters!!! Can you imagine living in those conditions, traveling to unknown territories, (Are they hostile? Are they friendly) relying on a doctor who has no idea how to keep a human alive and healthy, a cook who has no Idea of sanitary practices, a ship owner who cuts corners by trimming or buying substandard rations, no weather predictions... The list goes on and on! Those people were true adventures, dreamers and pioneers. I think Walt would have been aboard the Columbia if that was his era!!! - Boundin  489.3 #365 12:05AM

SUPER spoiler; there are KEY WORDS in the ride that will predict what scene you will get. To get Vader as your start scene listen to these when the ride start: Star Tours 1401 you are cleared for departure,  C-3po β€œ 1401 that’s us we cant take off the captain isn’t on board” and to get the security droid listen to this β€œ Star tour 1401 you are cleared for departure initiate auto takeoff sequence, c-3po β€œwhat” , computer- auto take off initited , c-3po β€œr2-d2 whats going on here we are not ready for takeoff the captain isn’t on board yet. The verbiage is very similar but has slight changes THAT’S how you know. Im not going to reveal anymore but will give you this hint the other changes in words are before r2 makes the jump to lighspeed and regardless of whose hologram you get it’s the verbiage that c-3po says right after that tells you your final scene. and this is before the screen comes down other way is after the screen comes down if you see the millennium falcon then you know you will not get vader. Want to have a greater chance to be the rebel spy? after you sit down try and look forward and still as they need to quickly take a pic this from being selected 5 times already. my fav destination is the death star  - pikarich  2369.2 #44 9:25AM

I am not on here much anymore, but this caught my eye.  I was one of those kids in the choir that opened Small World.  I was pretty little, but do remember most of that day.  I got to shake hands with Walt. He was so kind, and made a point to speak to each one of us. Taking the older kids leads, I decided not to wash my hand for a week. That only lasted a few days with the plastic bag and rubber band!  We also made one of the 45's that was sold in the park, that went gold.  We recorded it in a studio with the Sherman Brothers.  The choir got to lead the Christmas parade for two whole weeks in the evenings, when they debuted the huge Small World dolls. Being backstage during the holidays every night was truly magical!  I believe Walt found the choir, because we were involved with Unicef and the People to People program.  Our signature song was "Let there be Peace on Earth".  I know the song is annoying to many, but if you remember what Walt's vision was, it may make it a little easier to handle. There isn't a time that I don't get a tear when I ride it, or hear the song. I have a rich Disney history in other areas, but this was the highlight.  - snowwannab  667.3 #234 11:07AM

Bet those were super neat! You're right! Lots going on this week. I'm having a hard time keeping up! πŸ˜‚ laundry is starting to pile up. 😁 I love that the park is always changing, but I still do wish there was a way to keep everything. πŸ˜‚  - Duchess_SMK  5432.3 #14 10:30AM
