Just a thought... I visited DL yesterday  and while I was there I saw/heard  how some people can be so dishonest and encourage their children to do the same. I really think DL needs to revise their rules for those in the 'disablity' lines because after 80 mins of waiting in the 'Nemo' line I finalliy get to the front and a family of 9 walks right up with a son in a rented wheelchair and has a soft brace on his leg. The dad says,' this is awesome, we don't have to wait in any long f'n lines today! When we come again we have to bring a brace." I really think this is unfair to those that wait and those that really need to use these lines for extea assistance/time to enjoy the ride!  I think the same rules for the parent switch should apply to those using these lines to avoid abuse of the system.  These people are obviously not travelling alone... I don't think a sprained ankle constitutes a front of line pass throughout the park! These lines should be used by those that REALLY need it!!!!   What are your thoughts?

Totally agree. My hubby has handicap access, but we still wait in the regular lines. - MimiMouse  1015.6 #87 7:22AM
It's always a shame when someone takes advantage of a system. Honest people like yourself wouldn't do that and we all have to have faith that we'll raise our children not to be cheaters. Keep your head up, I'm sure you're not the only one that was bothered by this. ;) - Duchess_SMK  3291.1 #11 7:32AM
Some people just suck. - David  -0.2 #121730 8:24AM
If it helps, I think Nemo is one of the rides where if you can transfer to ride, you must wait in the entire line (the line can handle whhelchairs). If you can not transfer, the party goes into the ride booth or whatever it is called.. The alternate room where they basically watch a little movie of the ride... There are a few rides like this; if you can ride, you can wait. Wish more were. I really *love* seeing a party of 6 walk in the exit at Indy with 80 yr old grandma who obviously isn't riding, but now no one has to wait. - Shelly  -0.2 #122110 8:37AM
I think the majority will agree with you in this, but unfortunately there will always be people trying to take advantage of the system. Eliminating all foul play is impossible, though it is nice to see people being more considerate :). - Kat  4.2 #12585 8:41AM
people r just retarded like that! its sad that adults wuld do that tho! - disney_freek  -0.2 #122239 8:48AM
You're right. I had a sprained ankle the last time I went but I sucked it up and waited in the lines. We only use disability lines for my dad ( a medically discharged veteran) and my brother ( problems with his knees) but even then we wait in the regular lines unless my brother needs a wheelchair on the days when he can barely walk. - Heather  259.6 #913 10:28AM
That is so wrong! For a party that large (more than 4). All but the disabled and caretaker are supposed to wait in the line. - Lisa  16.4 #5470 10:39AM
I hate when this happens, I have knee problems and have trouble standing for ling periods of time, yet I never take advantage of the disability line because I don't want to cut in front of people who have been waiting so long - Joeslacker  3.5 #16563 11:42AM
As a meams of trying to maybe make people feel better: 1) It could have been a joke (maybe not...) but yes, 2) People get very distracted, self centered and thoughtless when they are desperate and think they will not have another chance to do something (N/A here but all the same)...In general, realizing that was the only thing that kept me sane this visit. Actually, my response was to be more civil than usual toward those folks. - sandhawk  0.0 #103397 1:28PM
Good to know, I'm not the only person that thinks the same. I totally agree with everyone.. Thanks! Happy New Year everyone! - Kuumaka  4.6 #11347 1:31PM
Also, if you are in a wheelchair or otherwise have difficulties, my own opinion is that you really ought to get priority service, all the time. (And I say this as a person who isn't in a wheelchair.) I mean, seriously, life is hard enough...You deserve the break. - sandhawk  0.0 #103397 1:34PM
I've done DL on crutches before with a broken ankle and didn't use the handycap lines. I hate when people abuse it! - Katrina  18.6 #5205 1:37PM
Wait a minute...I thought that at the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, you have to wait in line regardless if you're physically handicapped or not. That's what it says in the official Disneyland Resort pamphlet, or am I misreading it? - JohnQuinteros  5.3 #10049 1:52PM
Not to get off topic but the Nemo ride has MOO for people who cannot transfer etc. Just ask a cast member at the beginning of the line. Same experience minus sitting in the submarine. I prefer viewing it in the MOO - Mickeyfan  0.3 #56465 1:55PM
Karma will get 'em - DSNYLD4  3.1 #24744 1:57PM
I have been watching this thread since I read it before work this morning. My opinion is tga DL has created this by trying to be sensitive to handicapped guests. I understand that under the ADA (Americans with disabilities act) they can not ask questions. However, I think that the cycle is perpetuated by dishonest people. The CM should uphold the rules and not let the ENTIRE family take advantage of it. I agree with the person who said one person/caregiver per handicapped guest. - ToneLoc  456.8 #267 2:41PM
Where do you draw the line.... Which disabilities you can cut line and which ones you can't? So if someone is going to claim 'disability' then only one person can go to the head of the line! What about those twits who would bring a brace with them, how do you stop those jerks? Disney is too nice and not wanting to offend anyone, they also have young kids who do not feel comfortabe telling/ inforcing the rules! I guess I will grin and bear it when I see the abuse because what comes around goes around! I also believe some people have disabilities we can not see! - Pxydst  10.5 #193 3:26PM
I recently had foot surgery which ended up having a linger recovery time than anticipated. We rented a wheelchair. Still had to go for the 11 year old. All she wanted for Christmas was to renew our APs. I did not find that it helped for anyline. We actually used fastpasses more than usuall. I also found that people are very rude to you when you are in a wheelchair. Not what I expected at all. - Eriniffic  18.3 #5239 3:42PM
DL should ask for handicap parking permit or some form to prove they are in need of the wheel/scooter. If you do not have one, then you don't to be in those lines. Another idea is to hand out a pass that will allow up to 6 people in that party to use those lines. Or do what I do, get online and email customer service your thoughts about them. - Ingrid May  -0.1 #121170 5:16PM
I think you should have to have a doctors note stating why you need a wheelchair. If you need one that badly shouldn't you have your own? I know of people that rent then just for that reason. I believe Knott's changed their policy last year so the person in the wheelchair could wait in the front if the line but their party hAd to go thru the regular line. When the got to the front their party could then board with the person in the wheelchair. - Winkie  232.3 #1210 5:35PM
No matter what you do there will be people that cheat. There are lots of disabilties that cannot be seen. Disney has figured out the best compromise it can for this. It is better to err on the side of not affecting someone with a real disability than deal with a few cheaters of the system. - Dpfun  5.4 #9891 5:39PM
My son is autistic. He has a wide variety of issues that require him to use a guest assistace pass. First he is clostrophobic. Second he can become agitated and have a breakdown when confined in tight places. He also can not physically stand in line for very long. If it was not for the guest assistance, he would not get a chance to visit and enjoy DL. He can only handle being there for about 3 hours as it is. I agree with most of you because we have seen people abuse the system that is designed to help people like my son. - Martin  198.4 #1653 5:43PM
Don't be so judgemental. My 16 year old looks perfectly normal. She is not. She can't walk a lot or stand for long. For other reasons she can't wait in lines that are too long. Without the access we couldn't go. She also has a service dog. But people are very rude to her. Btw you are allowed up to 5 companions. So just because someone looks normal doesn't mean they are. - Polly  -0.2 #121432 5:51PM
I can't stand people who abuse the system. It just shows how great Americans are. I always see people who I see walking around, then I see them in a wheelchair. Karma will work her magic. - 0wnage  154.8 #2231 6:05PM
I think there needs to be a way to weed out the wheelchair of convenience. If it was less of an advantage it might decrease abuse. But that seems unfair to the true disabled. A drs note or handicap placard seems reasonable. Perhaps guests with less obvious true handicaps could be given a card or something to show cast members a limit to the size of the group is also needed. On our last trip. Family of 9 showed up at Alice, no obvious disabled person among them and demanded head of line priveledges, and were accommodated even though there was a long line and this group needed two ride vehicles. - DeneciePie  294.0 #645 9:06PM
The problem with requiring a placard is it also needed to park - Dpfun  5.4 #9891 9:26PM
It all depends on the cm. I have a very real disability and use the handicap lines. I don't look disabled at all!! I don't act disabled either, but it's there. Yes, some people do abuse it and it sucks. I always always bring a doctors note AND list of medications with me when I go just so the cm knows I'm the real deal. According to the ADA act, they CANNOT ask you for proof. Legally they have to take your word for it. I get nasty looks all the time, and it sucks. I just wanna go have fun too. - LaceySue  328.8 #479 9:32AM
it sux but we can't make people be honest or fair. - Jessica  325.7 #497 9:34AM
Plus, you are allowed only 5 people plus yourself with a chair or pass. I agree that those people who show up with 10 friends have to have the other guys wait in line. - LaceySue  328.8 #479 9:35AM
I remember that story from a while back. - CantWait  1033.2 #84 9:42AM
Well I'm a person with disabilities and when I go Disneyland or DCA I always go in long lines and not the disabled lines. It just frost my khakis that there are people out there who abuse the disabled line for their own gain. - Becky  551.0 #200 9:56AM
I agree with David!  - PrettyPixie  759.2 #132 10:04AM
What pisses me off is when I cannot rent a wheelchair or scooter and have to be put on the waiting list( yes I legitimately need one, and have a handicap placard) because a bunch of jackasses took them so they could get on all the rides " faster" - CMsMom  445.2 #276 10:09AM
People do take advantage of that rule!! Don't get me wrong however, I'm not saying anything about anyone that is disabled or needs help. As i think they are entitled to it. It's just reality in society today. Some people will do or say anything for a little advantage. Mostly though I just worry about myself because if I focus too much on others then I'll ruin my time. - Tcarnahan  73.8 #3348 10:13AM
I agree that if a person can walk then a wheel chair is not needed, but for even some minor injuries where you have to use crutches like a sprained ankle should not be looked down upon, it's too hard physically on the body to crutch around all day at the parks in lines and such - DLprincess  0.3 #60049 10:21AM
My MIL has arthritis in her knees. She looks fine an can walk fine, but a full day at DL would wreak havoc on her so she always uses a chair. Other things like epilepsy aren't noticeable but valid for using a wheelchair. I don't understand some people and how they can take advantage of things when there is genuine need. Drives me a little crazy! - CravingDisney  150.1 #2294 10:25AM
I agree there are reasons people need wheelchairs that we might not be able to see so we shouldn't necessarily judge by looking, but it's when they use it to take along 10, 15 or however many people in their party to cut in line! Taking advantage of the system is not ok! - KelBelle  452.8 #271 10:42AM
I agree. To add to your point. We took my 83 year old grandma to Disneyland on thanksgiving because my sister was in the Xmas parade and that was the only way my family could all be together. We went to rent a wheel chair so she could get around because walking was too much for her. The rest of the day I saw people with braces on arms and just lazy people using wheel chairs to not wait in line. By 7 pm we got a wheel chair for my grandma who was exhausted by that point. - Jeff&Shell  4.2 #12776 10:47AM
One of my friends wife totaly abuses this as I found out last year when they had the pass and I asked what's that for.....they said that thier three year old gets really upset and throws temper tantrums in line and they thought her kid. MIGHT be autistic - Dave  8640.6 #2 11:35AM
i actuallt think the disabled thing is good for those who really need it. 2 days after breaking my foot last year, my kids forced me to go to disneyland in pain with a cast. thank goodness i got on the rides quickly, but it still hurt! they said " i like it when mommy breaks her foot, so we can get to the front of the line" lol - Aahcapella  25.6 #4611 11:45AM
It is unfortunate that people feel the the need to abuse a system that was designed so that EVERYONE can enjoy DL. Oh well. I also believe in karma. They will get theirs... - Mickey28  17.4 #5352 11:45AM
My sister has handicap access with good cause. We never use until the end of the day when she actually NEEDS it. Some people are just jerks - Nickelnorm  101.4 #3019 11:52AM
salt has a pass because he gets mobbed by all the ladies and creates a scene - Dave  8640.6 #2 12:00PM
My brother is severely mentally retarded and one time a cast member tried to convince us to get a pass because he was throwing a fit about waiting in line and was causing a disturbance. My parents took us home instead. I think they felt they would be judged for getting a pass and taking advantage of the system. But my trip was ruined because if it and I always wished my parents would just swallow their pride and ask for the help that's intended for people like us! - PinkTink  23.1 #4807 12:40PM
It's funny you all mention this because as regular enthusiasts of the park, we think fastpasses are simply the way to go when waiting in line for attractions right? (cuz that's my thought) Anyway, a lil over a year ago when coming to the park, I met up with an aquaintance and her BF there. When meeting up with her, I notice she's on a wheelchair. I'm shocked because I've never known her to be disabled, so u ask her if something happened? Her answer was (to my dismay) the reason for the wheelchair is so "she could get on the rides without having to wait". I don't know, to me that just bothered me. - Mulannn  108.8 #2922 12:51PM
@Pink. I know how frustrating that must have been but as the mother of 2 disabled boys I can sympathize with your parents. Sometimes it just isn't worth the stares and snarky remarks to take advantage of things like the DL disabilities pass... And it's because people have long abused the system. Sorry your trip was ruined. Sounds like it was a tough day for the whole family. - SSGPaulsWife  11.8 #6266 12:57PM
My brother is a quad and we went one time and were so annoyed to see the same groups of people on different rides throughout the day bc one would be in the rented chair on one ride and then they would switch who was handicapped for other rides. - 25Cents  57.8 #3606 1:09PM
