Jul 18, 2014 2:35 PM  Disneyland Talk Land
Good afternoon! This day in Disney History, July 18th: Disneyland, Great Moments with Mr.Lincoln , The Red Wagon Inn (open since opening day), re-opens as the Plaza Inn and Splash Mountain all officially open to the general public!

1955: It was a humid Monday morning, park hours that day, 10am-10pm. Approximately 50,000 people attended. As mentioned yesterday, tickets cost $1.

crowds

A lucky 22 year old college student from Long Beach was the first to purchase a ticket and enter the park. Dave MacPherson waited all night to be the first. He is awarded a lifetime pass (otherwise know as a Golden pass) good for any three people and himself to Disneyland. The Pass is awarded to all Disney Legends, has been handed to countless dignitaries and heads of state, and all the members of the board of directors hold one.

He was so tired from waiting all night he later said he didn't ride any attractions nor take any photos! ::gasps:: I bet he regrets that!

To read a letter from Dave MacPherson himself:

The first children to enter the park? Lucky Cousins, Kristine Vess age 5 and Michael Schwartner, age 7. They were also both awarded with a Golden Pass. Talk about a good day! :)

Hank Dains, an original Cast Member of Disneyland is famously quoted for saying:
"I remember the first day we had paying guests in the park and Walt was over at the Fire Station looking out the window. I heard him say, 'Paying guests. I love you' ….and threw them a great big kiss!"

*Also on this day in 1965: Great Moments with Mr.Lincoln officially opens to the public. Yesterday was it's official dedication, but I didn't want to take away from yesterdays spotlight on Disneylands birthday. ;)

lincoln

Disneylands most patriotic attraction, Lincoln was dedicated by Walt and Lillian in celebration of the Disneyland's tenth anniversary (pictured below) It first appeared one year earlier at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair.

walt and lily

Walt summed up his purpose for presenting “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” on an episode of his television series, the Wonderful World of Color, entitled “Disneyland Goes to the Worlds Fair”:

Ever since I was small boy in Illinois, I have had a great personal admiration for Abraham Lincoln. So when we decided to re-create some of the great moments in Mr. Lincoln's life for the World's Fair we directed all our energies to that task. We wanted to bring to the people of today the inspiring words of the man who held this nation together during its moment of greatest crisis - the Civil War.” Walt Disney

Have you had the chance to enjoy Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln? What do you think of it?

*In Addition on that same day in 1965 The Red Wagon Inn (open since opening day) , re-opens as the Plaza Inn.

red wagon inn

plaza

The original delicious restaurant was the parks most popular, and Walts personal favorite.

Dave from davelandweb.com does an excellent job on his blog explaining the transition of the very special place we all get the famous “slap yo mama chicken”! His wonderful site features pictures from then and now. For the sake of time today I'll leave that up to him. ;) Hope you don't mind @Davelandweb :)

Have you had the chicken dinner at Plaza Inn? What did you think?

Lastly, on this day in 1989: Splash Mountain has it’s public debut! (Grand opening ceremony was held yesterday, but again, didn’t want to take away from Disneylands birthday)

splash

For anyone who may not know, the water attraction features scenes from the 1946 feature film Song of the South.

According to disneyparks.disney.go.com:

On July 17, 1989, a new attraction opened to guests in Critter Country at Disneyland park — one that made a big splash. That attraction was Splash Mountain, a log ride that remains a guest favorite today. It stands 87 feet tall and drops guests five stories at a 45-degree angle. The attraction is a journey through scenes, featuring the story of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, and ends with a thrilling splashdown. That’s the best part! No worries if you shut your eyes. A photo snaps a shot of guests reacting the moment they drop. If you don’t have a photo from splashdown with your face frozen in sheer elation, then it’s time to visit the Disneyland Resort. Trust me, it’s an experience you’ll always remember. Here’s a look back at opening day. Enjoy!”

I’m still giggling at the video they shared with it:

What do YOU think of Splash Mountain? Do you have a favorite part?

Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a fabulous Friday!

From what I remember, wasn't Mr Lincoln already playing at the park and a second show was made for the Illinois pavillion for the '64 World's Fair, making it the only Disneyland attraction from the Worlds Fair to be playing on both coasts at the same time?  - BaseballMickey_CM  6356.7 #12 12:05AM
It was vice versa. It opened here while it was still playing at the worlds fair. The fair lasted until October I believe.  - IDVandalSkipperCM  2211.6 #53 5:57AM
^^thank you ma'am! My you were up early! Baby doing okay today IDVandalSkipperCM ?! - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 7:33AM
Duchess_SMK she's great!  I had to get up early to get myself ready for work before taking her to child care. I hope you're doing well!   - IDVandalSkipperCM  2211.6 #53 8:42AM
That explains it. I remember seeing it at the World's Fair in June 1965, and was a bit confused on it opening here the same time. I actually saw all four Disney attractions at the Fair, Lincoln, Small World, Carousel of a Progress and the dinosaurs. So I got an early baptism in Disney! - redsoxcarlos  1214.7 #116 8:50AM
Very cool ☝ @redsoxcarlos - MickeyLumboCM  761.9 #210 3:45PM
Also, wasn't while designing Lincoln's face, that the imagineer turned the mask inside out and realized it seemed like the eyes were following him, which then led to DL being the first to have an attraction (Haunted Mansion) with the faces that follow you as you walk by.  design by accident, I always think that is so cool!! - secretagentangel  1304.5 #103 1:17AM
Yep. The illusion is that your mind can't process the light around the negative concaved shape so it compensates by telling you the item is moving instead of the lighting from which you're viewing. Disney actually owns a patent on this design if I recall. - CM_Shadowgamer  2375.0 #49 4:53AM
Thanks sectetagentangel! I just posted a pic of those guys from HM on Thursday! Thanks for your comment! ^^so cool! Thank you CM_Shadowgamer ! I appreciate you adding to  that! You were up early too! Or was it really late??? πŸ˜‚ - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 7:42AM
I remember reading that they do own the patent. It really shows how Walt Disney hired the best people because even when they weren't really trying to design something a certain way they still came up with awesome designs that no one ever thought of!!!!! And thanks Shadowgamer you  always give us the right info and facts to help us learn more! I know you love your job !!!I really envy your working at the park!😍 - secretagentangel  1304.5 #103 3:36PM

As always, great post. Β The first little girl to enter the park didn't look too thrilled in the pic. Β Lol. Β I have yet to try the fried chicken at Plaza Inn. Β As for Splash Mountain I love the characters. Β Takes me back to when I was a little girl and would watch the America sings show. Β I finally saw Moments with Mr. Lincoln for the first time a few months ago. Β I really enjoyed it. Β What I love about Walt was that he made the park fun and educational. Β There is so much history everywhere and I love pointing that out to my minis when we go. Β I guess that's the teacher in me. Β Thanks again for the lovely post. - potatohead25  582.6 #303 3:09PM
Thanks Gabster1forDodgers! Lol, I guess I should have picked the other when when she was smiling...oops πŸ˜‚  You haven't had the ??? Oh honey, you must try it if you're a chicken fan ASAP! Love that they used some of the animatronics from America sings in there! I'm glad you mentioned that! 😘 I so agree! I love that there is bits of American history throughout the park. All the educational opportunities are awesome! Isn't being a teacher great?! 😍 thanks again for taking  the time to let me know you enjoyed it!😘 - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 4:22PM
@Duchess_SMK  Finally tried the chicken tonight and you were right.  Delicious! - potatohead25  582.6 #303 11:55PM
Wonderful post!! 1)I've seen great moments with Mr. Lincoln, and think it's something everyone should see at least one time, and it's best to be seen on a hot day when you are tired because you can take a nice long break in there. 2)The chicken dinner at plaza inn is amazing!! Great value and definitely splittable πŸ‘ 3) and Splash Mountain is of course my favorite ride. I think it offers some of the best "thrills", great character scenes/songs and is actually quite lengthy. I'd say my favorite part is when you are dropping into "the laughing place" where it's pitch dark, and you do almost a double drop, it's pretty exciting! Wonderful post as always, I sure do love the history on Disneyland! Thanks!! - BrerPam  207.4 #1793 3:53PM
Thank you! Agreed! It's so nice and cool in there, and educational!  Yes, a lot of yummy food!  Good choice for a favorite! It had been so long since I've been on splash I forgot about that double drop! (My kids don't like splash. πŸ˜” thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions! I really appreciate it! πŸ˜˜πŸ’— - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 7:30AM

This was chalked full of Disney info. I love the look on Walt's face as he is looking up at children. Wow, I guess we should not complain about Main Street being packed. If it wasn't for the Plaza Inn, I wouldn't be able to bribe my hubby to take us to the parks.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. All of us love Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.  - RadiatorSprings4Ever  913.0 #170 10:46PM
Thank you darlin! I loved that pic too! Such a big smile! Lol! It was pretty crowded that day! Haha! My hubby loved the chicken too! Isn't Lincoln great? I need to go more often!  - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 7:36AM
Historically the opera house  thay now plays the Lincoln attraction was the first building built in disneyland and was used to house lumber and other supplies until it was turned into an attraction,  great moments with Lincoln has been in the park on and off from re time to time more when the 50th was around and replaced with the Walt disney story with Donald and Steve Martin,  then returned back to the Lincoln attraction again, it was funny the technology use for the animation is where so real people though that it was an actor playing on stage.  Yes love the fried chicken and if you didn't know you can buy the chicken and rolls a la cart or for the meal substitute the 3 pieces for 2 breastfeeding pieces, and for splash mnt based on song of the south which due to controversial story line will ever see the day of light someday, maybe , but a lot of the characters here especially in the show boat scene are from the old America sings attraction, plus the hardest hidden mickey is at the top of the main lift before you drop on the right side is 3 small pond holes in the shape of mickey - pikarich  3177.6 #33 11:43PM
I'm giggling at the "breastfeeding" typo. πŸ˜‚ thanks for adding allOf that pikarich! I actually hadn't read that it was the first building built on Main Street! Cool! Have a great day Sir!  - Duchess_SMK  5778.4 #14 7:38AM
@pikarich ...not one, but TWO breastfeeding pieces. That's a good deal, right? - MickeyLumboCM  761.9 #210 3:48PM
Wasn't there also another story with Mr. Lincoln arriving late the World's Fair due to the baseball game? Also, the auctioning pirate in POTC now I think used to be a Lincoln AA too. If you look at the face and beard, it kind of looks like Lincoln.  - BaseballMickey_CM  6356.7 #12 11:38PM
I agree , he does look like Lincoln! - secretagentangel  1304.5 #103 12:52AM
Yep, the Auctioneer was the original Lincoln. - CM_Shadowgamer  2375.0 #49 1:18AM

If you're there today, you can make HandMeAChurroImmaFaint 'S POTC meetup at 6 pm. Usually they will gather across from the ride entrance. Perhaps along the fence area of the Riverbelle Terrace. Look for a fairly large group of fun-loving people. Many will have their mouse ears on. Your hostess, Ms Churro, will be leading the way. Just dive right in and ask, 'excuse me. Is this the Mousewait meetup?'  You won't be sorry!  Disneygrl35 - MeridaFan  3439.0 #28 2:09PM

unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. Automated crowd prediction calendars are worthless--the UNFORECAST is where it's at!

unForecast for week of December 22, 2014:

Park Hours: DL: 8am-12am (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday-Sunday) 8am-11pm (Wednesday); DCA: 8am-11pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday-Sunday), 8am-10pm (Wednesday).

Reminder to check out the new "Freeze the Night", apart of Frozen Fun in Hollywood Land every night.

unForecast Crowd Prediction: Expect it to be busy this week, Monday and Tuesday, with CIs in the 80s in Disneyland Park and in the 70s in DCA. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are hard to predict, crowd wise, as it is sometimes busy and sometimes crowded. Then expect it to be busy the rest of the weekend.

Merry Christmas!  - BaseballMickey_CM Dec 22, 2014 12:07PM
