Jun 23, 2014 11:11 AM  Disneyland Talk Land
Good morning! This day in Disney history, June 23rd, The Skyway to Fantasyland and Skyway to Tomorrowland opens. Along with The Enchanted Tiki Room and the re-themed Tarzans Treehouse.

1956: The Skyway to Fantasyland and Skyway to Tomorrowland. Walt heard of a system being tested in Switzerland in 1955 and of course HAD to have one! After figuring out where the attraction would be placed in the park, he purchased a used 1947 Type 101 Sidechair #5, which was one of the Von Roll prototypes who was based in Bern, Switzerland. When Walt and the imagineers bought the ride, it became the 1st Von Roll aerial ropeway in the USA!

walt

Walt, and Dr Walter Smidt, the Swiss Consul General of Los Angeles, presided over the opening ceremonies. 42 gondolas carried 2 guests at a time over the park. They were dispatched  about every 9 seconds and moved at 4 mph. The Skyway gave guests an overview of the park between two stations: one in Fantasyland (where the drive system was located) and the other in Tomorrowland (where 35,000 pounds of ballast kept the 2400' long cables taut).

fantasyland

In between was the peak, a support tower located on Holiday Hill (basically a mound of dirt, which later became the Matterhorn). In 1959 after the Matterhorn was added, guests rode through it!

matterhorn

In 1965, rectangular buckets replaced the original round buckets. The rectangular buckets were a familiar sight in the skies of Disneyland for almost 30 years!

Did YOU ever ride the Skyway? What did you think of it? Do you miss it?

Also on this day in 1963: The Enchanted Tiki Room (a favorite for my minis) opened to the public in Adventureland! According to davelandweb.com: “It was the 1st attraction to cost $1million+, first fully air-conditioned building and 1st to feature Audio-Animatronics developed by WED Enterprises. United Airlines was the 1st official sponsor, but later changed to Dole.”

aventureland

Originally owned by Walt Disney (through WED Enterprises) the Tiki Room was to be a restaurant featuring AA birds serenading guests as they dined. The “magic fountain” was to be a coffee station (a storage compartment remains in the base) and the restaurant would have shared its kitchen with the now-defunct Tahitian Terrace (for more info about the terrace: http://tinyurl.com/mts76t7
and Plaza Pavilion Restaurant. Since ownership was separate from the rest of the park, a small admission of 75¢ was charged.

José is red, white, and green and speaks with a Mexican accent (Wally Boag)
Michael is white and green with an Irish brogue (Fulton Burley)
Pierre is red, white, and blue and has a French accent (Ernie Newton)
Fritz red, black, and white has a German accent (Thurl Ravenscroft, voice of Hawaiian God Tangaroa-Ru near the entrance)

An AA talking Juan the “barker” bird was once located near the walkway to beckon visitors inside, but was removed when he caused enormous traffic jams of gawking guests. (Stickers please!)

The birds all have real feathers with the exception of the chest area which is covered in custom-woven cashmere, allowing the figures to “breathe” in a lifelike manner (inspired by an employee at a planning meeting who wore a cashmere sweater which moved at the elbows exactly the way the engineers envisioned).

225+ talking, singing, and dancing birds, flowers, the magic fountain, tiki drummers and tiki totem poles make this attraction a MUST SEE in my opinion. Hopefully all you lucky people in the park will stop by for a dole whip and birthday performance today!

Have you been in the Tiki Room? Do have a favorite song or part of the show?

Lastly, in 1999 Tarzans Treehouse opens in Adventureland. Some of you may remember it as being Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, which closed in March 8th, 1999.

To take a climb and walkthrough of Tarzans Treehouse:

I've posted this in the past but this is an Interesting OC news story done about the original tree that inspired Walts version of the treehouse at Disneyland:

Do you like the the updated Tarzans Treehouse? Or do you prefer the original Swiss Family Robinson version?

Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a Magical Monday!

Short and sweet this time, rode the skyway once on my only visit to the park when I was 6 yrs old , the teacup with the photo ops by mad tea party is the one of the old pylons for the skyway covered up, glad the tree house is back, great exercise up the stairs - pikarich  5904.6 #22 11:46AM
Thanks pikarich! I'll be looking for that pylon next trip! And yes, the treehouse is great exercise!  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:48AM
Awesome post! Love all of the details!  We need a 🌲🏠 sticker! - Atora  2702.2 #55 11:49AM
Thanks sweetie! We do need a treehouse sticker! 😊 - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:49AM
I loved the Skyway and going through the Matterhorn. My kids were able to ride when they were very small before it closed. The good thing about the Tiki Room is you can ride it after It's a Small World and get a new song stuck in your head ;). I loved Swiss Family Robinson but I also love the Tarzan Treehouse (took me a while though). Thanks Duchess! - ShariRenee  10346.6 #8 11:54AM
Bhahahaha it's true! The songs are quite catchy!! Good for you for being excepting, I still miss the Swiss! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜ thank YOU!  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:50AM
Loved the skyway and was so sad to see them leave😒  . I love the Tiki room and did not exactly know where this guy was from. I wish I could go back in time and go to the Tahitian restaurant 🌺🌴.  I like that the poster for Tarzan's treehouse/Swiss family Robinson's treehouse flashes! πŸ‘πŸ‘ very nice!! Though, I think you know where I stand on this... Give the tree back to the Robinson's from SwitzerlandπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ (though, I must say, I do love the bottom of the treehouse and all the things to look at). Thanks for another wonderful post     - misschurro...  7272.1 #14 11:57AM
Oh I think my favorite part of the skyway was just the Queue- waiting in line, going up the stairs, under the pine trees was like being in the Black Forest, and how pretty it was to look at on Fantasyland😍😍 - misschurro...  7272.1 #14 2:40PM
Me too! Too bad some bad eggs had to ruin it for the rest of us! Yes! The barker bird was a mystery to many I believe. 😊 so glad you enjoyed the poster. I'd used it before but I like that one a lot too! I'm with ya mama, I miss the Swiss too! ::sigh:: great spot for a favorite! I hardly remember it. πŸ˜” thank  YOU my sweet churro friend! πŸ˜˜πŸ’— - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:54AM
Thank you for sharing this!  I just love the history of it all!  I remember going to a restaurant behind the Tiki room.  It had like a mini luau for  a dinner show.  Was that the Tahitian one?  It was a great dinner/show experience.  I miss the skyway!  Bummed they took it down. - DisneyPiratePrincess  272.8 #1174 12:23PM
Thank YOU! I do believe that was the Tahitian show! Seems you aren't alone in missing the skyway. I'm bummed too!  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:55AM
love this post! those would scare the beejeebs out of me, but i bet the view was awesome! - OhanaPhoto  6397.5 #21 12:44PM
Thanks doll! πŸ˜‚ oh you're so funny! The view was incredible!  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:56AM
Wow, so much happened on this date!  I adored the Skyway!  I still miss it very much--I think my favorite part was going through the Matterhorn and coming out above Fantasyland 😍   So sad it's gone.  Love the Tiki Room, of course--my husband once fell asleep while we were in there πŸ˜‚ (how is that possible with all the singing?!).  And the Treehouse has always been a favorite (I'm a climber and I love being up high)--I'm torn on which version I prefer.  Swiss Family Robinson was SUCH a great movie, but I also like it as Tarzan's, and I like the music/soundtrack that plays as you climb.  Thanks for so much info today!  - Spoonful_O_Sugar  627.3 #336 1:02PM
That was the best part in my opinion too! ::giggles:: I could see it, after a long day of walking around, it's so nice and cool in there! Well, it's nice you like both! Disneyland did good then! Thanks so much for taking the time to add your two cents! πŸ’—πŸ˜˜ - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:58AM
Correct me if I'm wrong but I read somewhere that it was imagineer Harriet Burns that saw the way the cashmere moved on Walt's sweater and was inspired to use that material for the breast? Or is this just a story that's been passed down but isn't actually true?  - jazzydarling  39.3 #5401 1:21PM
I also heard the something but can not corroborate it. - Boundin  778.3 #252 9:30PM
Honestly I don't know. I hadn't heard that story before but I love it! 😊 Thanks for sharing that!Β  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 6:59AM
Great post as always ! 😍 I love the Tiki room as I am a parrot lover and owned them for over 30 years . So I just love the whole vibe of the tiki room . 😊 loved the real tree that Walt got the inspiration from. That's truly a magnificent tree! The sheer size of it was amazing ! I'm glad it's not marked or well known though, because I would fear people would start to damage it, by wanting to take a piece or more. I personally don't remember the Swiss family treehouse that much... But because I have oh so many memories of my kiddos on tarzans treehouse, that it gets my vote as being my favorite 😍thanks again for this wonderful and informative post πŸ‘ - eviljules  1445.4 #122 1:24PM
Oh lovely! What kind of parrot do you own? I used to have an African grey. She passes away trying to lay me an egg though. I was heartbroken! Someday I'll get another. Parrots are great! Isn't it a magical tree!? Loved that news story! You're right about people wanting to damage it! Such a shame. Thank YOU for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it! πŸ’—πŸ˜˜ - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 7:03AM
Never experienced the Skyway, but I'm always around the Tiki Room and the Treehouse. Its funny to watch so many people walk by the Tiki Room everyday and say "what is the Tiki Room!!? " and continue to walk and will never to get experience one of Walt's amazing shows.  - BaseballMickey  7890.3 #11 1:32PM
That must be pretty incredible to hear people say that as a walk by.πŸ˜‚. They are soo missing out - misschurro...  7272.1 #14 2:41PM
::gasps:: such a shame! It is shah a treat! We go in there every trip!  - Duchess_SMK  6501.3 #19 7:04AM

I always love your post! Thanks for sharing - BriarBeauty  121.7 #3243 8:41AM
I loved the skyway. I'm pretty sure it's my cousin's fault it was closed and removed. He would get a little box of rock candy and throw it at people. If he ran out of candy he would try and spit on people. My favorite part of the tiki room is when the ladies drop down and have us sing along. Unless Maynard's there then his intro is my favorite part of the show. I liked the Swiss tree but kids don't know of the movie or the book so it makes since to change it to Tarzan. I think it's a good change and lots of fun. - Bassplayerswife  643.5 #324 10:20AM

Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com

unFORECAST for the month of May 2016
The last few weeks have been relatively quiet, but we will see crowds rise as we get to the end of May, especially toward the end of the month when Grad Nite begins. Looking back at MouseWait's Historical Crowd Index (available in our MagicPlan iOS Calendar), crowds averaged in the high 70s (approx 70% capacity), then the Crowd Index rose to the 80s toward the end of the month. Remember, we've seen larger crowds ever since the 60th Celebration began, so keep that in mind when looking at historical Crowd Index data. To get a real-time look at crowd levels, check the MouseWait App for Crowd Index averages and wait times. Have a great week! - Admin May 9, 2016 5:42PM

We have always noticed that Saturdays are better than Sundays! We always come on the weekend and say we want to leave at dinner time on Sunday, but always leave by 11-12 because there are so many people. We love Saturday!! - 1Princess3Princes  643.2 #325 5:39PM
I agree. I think it has to do with most passes being blocked - PoohSizedGuy  20.6 #7433 11:53PM

MouseWait COUNTDOWN for iOS is here! Countdown the days to your next Disneyland or Disney World trip with our images OR your pics! Your Countdown also displays on Apple Watch and is beautiful on iPhone 6 screens. Secure the discounted launch price for a limited time.

So from the looks of it, there is not even one app made for those of us on android. You know there are millions of people who do not own iPhones. Its kind of rediculous these days not to offer an android version of apps. Would love to help this site grow by donating, but I see no point in that when there appears to be no intrest by the app builders here to support android. I mean how about atleast a partialy functional app so we can feel that theΒ android users are even wanted as a part of the mousewait community.Β I see lots of requests and sad posts about no android, but dont see any replys by the site to the fact that anyone is even working on it.I've checked back here every so offten to see if there is anything for android users, but never bothered joining until today.I just wanted to rant a little, and now I am done.Unfortunalty, at this point I think I am officaily giving up on mousewait.Β Thanks for reading Β and understanding my frustrations ( i hope ) and please everyone........Have a Disney-tastic day!Mark - molney14u  0.1 #105863 11:05AM
I have an iPhone and an old droid. I use the old droid for wait times when my iPhone can't connect and it works fine. There's so many droid phones to have  separate apps for but I hope android makers would start using the basic same code and security but I'm probably wishing on a star for that . I miss my droid but a lot of apps don't work the same.  - secretagentangel  6439.5 #20 8:10PM
