Best Post of the Day 6-15-14
Good morning! This day in Disney history, June 15th, 1957: Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue restaurant opens in Frontierland. The very first grad night is held in 1961. Club 33 opens in NOS in 1967, and Cars Land and Buena Vista Street officially opens in 2012!

1957: Taking over the space that had been previously occupied by Casa De Fritos, The Silver Banjo was located right next to the Aunt Jemima Pancake House and owned by Actor Don DeFore.

According to Davelandweb.com: “The restaurant was counter service or cafeteria style with a cashier at the end of the line. They served sandwiches, ribs, chicken, fish and chips, baked beans, cole slaw and french fries.” MMMMM!

menu

There were a few tables inside with a jukebox nearby, and many more tables outside. Walt Disney used to love to eat there with Don and his family; it was one of his favorite spots in the park.

The Silver Banjo was the only establishment at Disneyland to display the name of a non-fictional person and the only business ever to be OWNED by an INDIVIDUAL. You may recognize Don DeFore from the "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" he played "Thorny" or as "Mr. B Baxter" on "Hazel"

Don Feore

The Silver Banjo Barbecue closed in 1961 to allow expansion of the neighboring Aunt Jemima Pancake House. With subsequent name changes and remodeling, the restaurant became Aunt Jemima’s Kitchen, the Magnolia Tree Terrace, and now the River Belle Terrace.

Had you heard of this restaurant?

In 1961: The very 1st Disneyland Grad Night is held. Seniors are let loose in the Disneyland theme park from 11pm to 6am, for an all-night party just for them. Approximately 8,500 students form 28 LA area schools attended, making it the largest high school grad party to be held in the U.S.! From the photos below, courtesy of Life Magazine from the 60’s, you can see the graduates were required to adhere to a strict dress code that has since been completely relaxed.  What was once sport coats and party dresses has become t-shirts and sneakers. ::sigh::

I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say her feet hurt worse then his. ;)

In the main collage photo below there is a ticket from that 1st night! Notice the admission price, $6.00!

Did you go to your grad night? Did you have to dress up? Did you make it all night?

In addition, in 1967 The Club 33 restaurant opens at 33 Royal Street, in New Orleans Square. This for members only restaurant was created as a place to "wine & dine" VIPs, friends and sponsors of Disneyland. Members like: Kodak, Atlantic-Richfield, Bank of America, Bell Telephone, C&H Sugar, Frito Lay, General Electric, Global Van Lines, Carnation, Hallmark Cards, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Douglas Aircraft, Coca-Cola, Hills, Brothers Coffee, INA, Lincoln Savings and Loan, Monsanto, Pendleton, Pepsi-Cola, Ken-L Ration, Aunt Jemima, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, Spice Islands, Chicken of the Sea, Sunkist, Sunsweet Growers, Swift & Co., Timex, United Air Lines, Upjohn, Welch's, Wurlitzer, Western Printing and Litho CO.

Have YOU had the opportunity to dine at club 33? If so, what did you think?

I was lucky enough to be invited in 2010 by some dear friends (Photo in the main collage) . I had the salmon and it was SCRUMPTIOUS!

Lastly, on this day in 2012 at a cost of $1 billion dollars, Cars Land and Buena Vista Street officially open to the public.

A construction photo taken in April 2012
construction

Based on the the Cars movies, Cars Land is the largest piece of a five-year expansion at DCA, adding 12 acres of new attractions to the park. Luigi's Flying Tires, Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, and Radiator Springs Racers are all unveiled. My daughters and I were there that day and if my memory serves me correctly I believe the wait for racers was at least 5 hours!

Buena Vista Street (BVS), formerly known as Sunshine Plaza is DCA's version of Main Street, USA. Buena Vista Street is themed to represent 1920s Los Angeles, when Walt Disney first arrived in California. The Red Trolly cars are the only "attraction" but the GORGEOUS Carthay Circle Theatre, (which is modeled after the site of the 1937 world premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”) includes a lounge and Carthay Circle Restaurant.
Have YOU eaten there yet? Do you have a favorite dish from there?

A special area was set up inside the Animation Building where Annual Passholders could purchase opening day merchandise. We bought a few post cards and pins. But all kinds of merchandise was available: hats, shirts, glasses, key chains etc.

To watch scenes from the grand opening:

The OC register did a news story about these lucky people, they were the 1st in line to get into DCA that day. They even got to meet John Lassiter! For some reason I can’t figure out how to embed the video for this one so you have to click the link, sorry!
To watch: http://tinyurl.com/lanwf7k

Were YOU at the grand opening of BVS and Cars Land? Do you have a favorite area in either?

Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a splendid Sunday!

What a fun filled history post! So many wonderful attractions opened and such changes around the Parks! A mere nickel for a bag of Fritos! mmm! I like that! It would be pretty incredible to hear Aunt Jemima singing to me whilst I ate Mark Twain buckwheat pancakes. I wonder what songs were in her line up? The prices at The Silver Banjo, a place I had not heard of, look pretty tempting – I'll take the spareribs plate and a lemonadeπŸ‹ bc I see they do not offer CokeπŸ˜‚. That picture of the Grad kids rubbing their feet is pretty funny and I agree, I'm sure her feet hurt a bit more than his- but gosh the way they are dressed is sooo😍😍!! I also like the snuggle Matterhorn picture... Not sure how easy that was to do with a blazer onπŸ˜‚. I really wish that our high school would have offered it, I definitely would have gone to the grad night and wore probably something totally 80s- maybe pastel dress?? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.  I really like the outfit and pillbox hat on the lady standing next to the Club33 door. So classy. I have never been to Club 33- I would love to see the inside for my love❀️ of history, take in the view on the balcony of NOS and ROA, and perhaps enjoy the food😊😊 (I will just bet that the salmon was delicious – you know I love it, tooπŸ‘―) When I first heard that DCA was going to be made over, I wasn't quite sure because I was so saddened to see the CALIFORNIA letters come down. We always enjoyed taking photos next to the initials of our little churros. When we finally did go to DCA, for the first time, I had tears rolling down my face because of the beauty and how it just looked like it *belonged*.  I was lucky to eat at the Carthay, a year ago, with some wonderful MWers at the Reunion Weekend in the Snow White room. What a spectacular place that was- and so full of detail. As for favorite dish, I'm not sure-I just took it all in, but those cheese biscuits SURE were tastyπŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ LOVE your collage! You and the girls look so cute and they are so little! Thank you very much for such a great history post 😘 - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  5404.1 #17 7:57AM
So sorry for the late reply! yesterday was super busy! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all my questions my sweet friend! Spareribs and lemonade! 😊 good choice! I just knew you'd love those grad night pics! They really are cute huh? Lol, that blazer did look quite snug! You would have looked so cute in that pastel dress! I hope you get to go to club 33 someday soon! Everyone should get to experience it at least once! Mmm yes!Salmon is our fav! πŸ‘― what sweet memories you shared about your churros! Thank you for that! I agree those busquits are πŸ’£! πŸ˜‹ thanks again! πŸ˜˜πŸ’— - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:28AM
Thanks again Duchess for such an awesome post.  Thoserestaurants you mentioned were before my time.  I had never even heard of them, but I love the prices.  Haven't had the pleasure of club 33.  Maybe when I win the lottery.   Lol.  As for grad nites I think they were more special back then.  Dressing up makes it a glorious occasion and having the park open all night just for Grads was awesome.  I don't like The way they do it now.  It takes away all the special glory of an all night celebration just with other grads.  Now, it is set up as just a trip to Disneyland.  Lastly, Carsland is a great addition.  However, my most favorite addition is Buena Vista street.  Love the Trolleys, jazz, and rag time dancers.  Character outfits are also very cute!  Thanks again for the wonderful post and good luck with that little bun in the oven that you think may be a trouble maker.  :). My son is 10 now and he was a trouble maker from the start of conception.  However, I love him with all my heart and he keeps me laughing and on my toes.  Lol. :) - potatohead25  608.8 #310 10:10AM
My sincere pleasure! So happy you enjoy them! I agree! I love those prices too! πŸ˜‚you don't need to win the lottery, just need to be invited! πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‰ I bet you'll get to go someday you watch! I a also agree with you about the grad nights! The dressing up part made it more fun and special! I could live on BVS if they let me! πŸ˜‚ Love the time period and the music! Thank you so much for the well wishes for my little man on the way! I've accepted the challenge of the trouble maker, hubby's a red head, and all my kiddos are usually born red, you know what that means. πŸ˜‚ thanks again for your reply! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:34AM
I must say...the world has forever changed in regards to dress code.  Once common suit and ties and dresses have been replaced with vulgar t/shirts and booty shorts.  Although Disney would be happy that millions of people were enjoying the parks...he might raise and eye to the standards (or lack thereof) by which many dress today.  Thanks (as usual) for an informative post that also reminds us of the "good ol days"! - DisneyDavidEMT  2280.1 #56 2:16PM
It really is sad isn't it. πŸ˜” it's hard to imagine what Walt would think. Thank YOU for taking the time to tell me you enjoy them! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:36AM
My cousin and I used to love to eat at Aunt Jemima's!  We would go there for dinner, even. I don't think we cared what time of day it was. We loved pancakes!  And they had every kind imaginable. I specifically remember those buckwheat pancakes. We thought we were so cool and worldly ordering up pancakes we could never get at home. Haha!  It was a lot of fun back in those days. Great memories for me. 😊. Carsland opening. We were not there that day, but our long planned week long vacation began two days later, on Father's Day. I know I picked up some souvenirs back then. I kinda tend to do that a lot. 😜 This was our first Disney trip in nearly three years. Getting to see Carsland was a bonus!  That Sunday was surprisingly not that crowded. We got fastpasses for RSR and only had about a 20 minute wait in line. Of course, we all thought it was awesome!  We all loved Maters' ride and still do. The kids went on Luigis' Tires. I always wondered why it wasn't a little bit faster.   Reading your list of old sponsors really brings back memories. I remember Frito Lay. I remember Sunkist Oranges. I remember when you could actually get ice cream at the Carnation Cafe!  I remember the Pendleton wool shop in Frontierland that my mom and aunts and grandma would always love to go shopping in and come out with something new and plaid. Sigh. Oh, to go back for just one day and see all those giggling ladies having fun shopping. Or to meet them for some spare change to buy our pancakes while they wait with their men in line for the next Horseshoe Revue show. That was my childhood. And I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Thank you, beautiful Duchess, for another lovely trip down memory lane. 😘 - MeridaFan  3549.4 #36 8:34AM
I'm super bummed out I missed out on the pancake house! I LOVE me some pancakes! You,souvenirs no way? LOL I could totally picture in my mind your walk to the Horseshoe Revue. Such a blessed childhood you had to grow up visiting Disneyland. I hope my kiddos grow up to have such happy memories! Thanks for taking the time to share with us sweetheart! I really appreciate it! xx - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 9:37AM

Thank you for a great post! I didn't get to go to grad nite.  My high school in Vegas went every year, and then my year they stopped. I am still bitter about that LOL. Of course now they go again, adding to the bitterness. Even my son's elementary school in Las Vegas had the 8 th graders go last year.  I have yet to visit Club 33 but I just know that someday I will, it is a lifelong dream!  - Thumper13  486.7 #403 8:56AM
::gasps:: what a bummer! I'd be bitter as well! I know you're right about club 33! You will someday for sure! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:38AM
I feel your pain.  My school was banned at some point and even when they lifted the ban, the parents decided they could throw us one in the school gym and charge $50 for the privilege.  Now they just go to disneyland.  Grrr... - bluefairy  643.3 #289 9:48AM
I had never heard of the silver banjo or any of the other restaurants, only the River Belle Terrace. I love their prices. I went to gradnite in '89 and there was a dress code. Girls could not wear pants and boys had to have a collared shirt. My feet were killing me! There was a stage and dance area where Mickey and the magical lamp is located. We had NKOB performing there. Samantha Fox was there too but I can't remember if they used the same stage. There were radio stations all over the park playing music. It was a lot of fun! I had never heard of club33 until my husband joined MW. One day I may be lucky enough to dine there. I wasn't sure I was going to like the changes to Buena Vista St. but I did. It was love at first sight. The burger at Carthy Circle is my favorite. I was not at the Cars Land opening. Too many people for me, I would have had a major panic attack. When I did see it for the first time it was simply amazing. I think it is my favorite place in the park, especially at night. Thanks for all the great history and the thinking questions. It fills my heart with wonderful memories when I have to think about the answers to your questions.😊 - Bassplayerswife  361.7 #590 9:44AM
I'm an '89 grad as well. - potatohead25  608.8 #310 10:00AM
Yay for class of '89. πŸ˜ƒ - Bassplayerswife  361.7 #590 11:18AM
You my dear are too kind! Thank YOU for taking the time to answer all my questions. 😊 Those were great prices huh? πŸ˜‚ I too had a dress code when I went as well. It's a shame they did away with that! I can't believe you got to see NKOTB at DL! I would have died! Joey! ::swoons:: πŸ˜‚πŸ’—I'm sure you will indeed get to enjoy club 33 someday! It's quite the treat for the history alone! I've yet to try the burger at carthay! Thanks for the tip! It was quite busy opening day! We just wanted to go for the cool merchandise and to say we were there! πŸ˜‚ thanks again for sharing your memories with us! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:46AM

My Grad Night was in '74, and we still had the strict dress. And some amazing entertainment; I think Olivia Newton-John was playing. Made it worth the six hour bus ride from Salinas. And, been lucky enough to take advantage of my company's 33 membership. Douglas was one of the founders, and while they've been absorbed, the membership was kept up. Great place to go if you have a chance, and some spare change; it is pricey, but worth it. in  - redsoxcarlos  1769.2 #81 2:09PM
😳 wow what a treat! See, way more special then it is now! Great advantage getting to use your companies 33 membership!  I agree, pricey, but worth it to go at least once!  - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:49AM

Amazing selection of nuggets from Disney's history. Great info on the Silver Banjo. Grad night pictures were awesome. I went in 1987 and a dress code was still required. I remember walking around DL carrying my shoes. πŸ‘ πŸ˜. I guess I never had @HandMeAChurroImmaFaint's talent for walking in heels. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ - RadiatorSprings4Ever  1137.3 #142 10:47PM
"Nuggets" πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š ha! I did the same, carried my shoes. But still had a wonderful time! Yeah that churro has some major talent! 😍 thanks for your dm by the way! Means a lot to me! πŸ˜˜πŸ’— - Duchess_SMK  6041.0 #15 5:52AM

Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com

unFORECAST for the week of June 29, 2015

Last year, Independence Week was unusually slow. July 4 was one of the slowest days of the year, if you can believe that! Looking back at MouseWait's Historical Crowd Index (available in our new MagicPlan iOS Calendar), this week averaged in the 60s, which is not very crowded at all. It is supposed to cool down a little later in the week, which could bring large crowds this weekend. To get a real-time look at how crowded the Parks are, check the MouseWait app for real-time Crowd Index averages and wait times.  - Admin Jun 29, 2015 12:52PM

We have always noticed that Saturdays are better than Sundays! We always come on the weekend and say we want to leave at dinner time on Sunday, but always leave by 11-12 because there are so many people. We love Saturday!! - 1Princess3Princes  413.4 #498 5:39PM
