Good morning! This day in Disney history, June 15th, 1957: Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue restaurant opens in Frontierland. The very first grad night is held in1961. Club 33 opens in NOS in1967, and Cars Land and Buena Vista Street officially opens in 2012!
According to Davelandweb.com: “The restaurant was counter service or cafeteria style with a cashier at the end of the line. They served sandwiches, ribs, chicken, fish and chips, baked beans, cole slaw and french fries.” MMMMM!
“There were a few tables inside with a jukebox nearby, and many more tables outside. Walt Disney used to love to eat there with Don and his family; it was one of his favorite spots in the park.”
The Silver Banjo was the only establishment at Disneyland to display the name of a non-fictional person and the only business ever to be OWNED by an INDIVIDUAL. You may recognize Don DeFore from the "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" he played "Thorny" or as "Mr. B Baxter" on "Hazel"
The Silver Banjo Barbecue closed in 1961 to allow expansion of the neighboring Aunt Jemima Pancake House. With subsequent name changes and remodeling, the restaurant became Aunt Jemima’s Kitchen, the Magnolia Tree Terrace, and now the River Belle Terrace.
Had you heard of this restaurant?
In 1961: The very 1st Disneyland Grad Night is held. Seniors are let loose in the Disneyland theme park from 11pm to 6am, for an all-night party just for them. Approximately 8,500 students form 28 LA area schools attended, making it the largest high school grad party to be held in the U.S.! From the photos below, courtesy of Life Magazine from the 60’s, you can see the graduates were required to adhere to a strict dress code that has since been completely relaxed. What was once sport coats and party dresses has become t-shirts and sneakers. ::sigh::
I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say her feet hurt worse then his. ;)
Dance pavilions were set up all over the park
In the main collage photo below there is a ticket from that 1st night! Notice the admission price, $6.00!
Did you go to your grad night? Did you have to dress up? Did you make it all night?
In addition, in 1967The Club 33 restaurant opens at 33 Royal Street, in New Orleans Square. This for members only restaurant was created as a place to "wine & dine" VIPs, friends and sponsors of Disneyland. Members like: Kodak, Atlantic-Richfield, Bank of America, Bell Telephone, C&H Sugar, Frito Lay, General Electric, Global Van Lines, Carnation, Hallmark Cards, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Douglas Aircraft, Coca-Cola, Hills, Brothers Coffee, INA, Lincoln Savings and Loan, Monsanto, Pendleton, Pepsi-Cola, Ken-L Ration, Aunt Jemima, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, Spice Islands, Chicken of the Sea, Sunkist, Sunsweet Growers, Swift & Co., Timex, United Air Lines, Upjohn, Welch's, Wurlitzer, Western Printing and Litho CO.
Have YOU had the opportunity to dine at club 33? If so, what did you think?
I was lucky enough to be invited in 2010 by some dear friends (Photo in the main collage) . I had the salmon and it was SCRUMPTIOUS!
Lastly, on this day in 2012 at a cost of $1 billion dollars,Cars Land and Buena Vista Street officially open to the public.
A construction photo taken in April 2012
Based on the the Cars movies, Cars Land is the largest piece of a five-year expansion at DCA, adding 12 acres of new attractions to the park. Luigi's Flying Tires,Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, and Radiator Springs Racers are all unveiled. My daughters and I were there that day and if my memory serves me correctly I believe the wait for racers was at least 5 hours!
Buena Vista Street (BVS), formerly known as Sunshine Plaza is DCA's version of Main Street, USA. Buena Vista Street is themed to represent 1920s Los Angeles, when Walt Disney first arrived in California. The Red Trolly cars are the only "attraction" but the GORGEOUS Carthay Circle Theatre, (which is modeled after the site of the 1937 world premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”) includes a lounge and Carthay Circle Restaurant. Have YOU eaten there yet? Do you have a favorite dish from there?
A special area was set up inside the Animation Building where Annual Passholders could purchase opening day merchandise. We bought a few post cards and pins. But all kinds of merchandise was available: hats, shirts, glasses, key chains etc.
To watch scenes from the grand opening:
The OC register did a news story about these lucky people, they were the 1st in line to get into DCA that day. They even got to meet John Lassiter! For some reason I can’t figure out how to embed the video for this one so you have to click the link, sorry! To watch: http://tinyurl.com/lanwf7k
Were YOU at the grand opening of BVS and Cars Land? Do you have a favorite area in either?
Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a splendid Sunday!
Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com
unFORECAST for the week of August 24, 2015 Summer is over, according to the Disneyland Resort calendar. Hours have been reduced for the first time since summer began (Disneyland & DCA closes at 10pm M-TH). Most Orange County schools are back in session today, which usually points to smaller crowds. Looking back at MouseWait's Historical Crowd Index (available in our new MagicPlan iOS Calendar), this week last year averaged in the low 60s (approx 60% capacity) -- it even dipped into the 50s on some days. This data points to lower crowds this week. If you've been waiting for the summer madness to end, this might be your week to hit the Parks! To get a real-time look at crowd levels, check the MouseWait App for Crowd Index averages and wait times. Have a great week! - Admin Aug 24, 2015 11:03AM
