Good morning! This day in Disneyland history, April 3rd, 1966: The Midget Autopia attraction in Disneyland closed to make a new larger walkway for the soon-to-open It’s A Small World attraction.
First making it's debut in 1957The Midget Autopia, was the third and smallest Autopia track following the Tomorrowland Autopia (1955) and the Junior Autopia in Fantasyland (1956). It was the only Autopia where every car had two steering wheels. This Autopia was for kids ONLY, no grownups allowed! The other Autopias resembled freeways, this one looked more like what you see out in the country.
Check out this roadster! I love that the headlights actually worked! Must have been super neat at night!
Here’s another map so you can get a better idea. (Thanks to mycroft16 on micechat.com) Blue = Tomorrowland Autopia Green = Fantasyland Autopia Yellow = Midget Autopia
If you fast forward to 3:53 in the home video below, you can get a brief glimpse of the Midget Autopia. Right after a few flying saucers. ;)
Maybe you’re wondering what happened to the other two Autopias? “The Junior Autopia closed in 1958, and reopened in 1959 as the expanded Fantasyland Autopia. The Tomorrowland Autopia and the Fantasyland Autopia operated until 1999, when work began to combine the tracks into a single attraction. In 2000, the redesigned attraction opened as the “Autopia, presented by Chevron,” with a new fleet of intelligently redesigned cars.” yesterland.com
Walt donated the Midget Autopia to his boyhood hometown of Marceline, Missouri - where it operated for several years in Walt Disney Municipal Park until cost and maintenance issues lead to it's closure.
I tried to find a video for you of the Marceline location but unfortunately the few that I DID find had other then PG-13 language. SO, here is Lucy, a cute little mouseketeer riding her trike through the track which is now overgrown with grass and moss.
Have YOU ever been to Walt Disney Municipal Park?
Do you remember Midget Autopia? What did you think of it?
Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a tremendous Thursday!

Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com
unFORECAST for the first week of December 2015 The first week of December is usually light as the Disneyland Resort temporarily moves to shorter operating hours. Monday will be crowded, Tuesday through Thursday should be a lot lighter, then look for bigger crowds starting Friday and through the weekend. Looking back at MouseWait's Historical Crowd Index (available in our MagicPlan iOS Calendar), this week last year averaged in the low 70s (approx 70% capacity). Important note when comparing last year's Crowd Index: we've seen larger crowds on average this year due to the 60th Celebration activities. To get a real-time look at crowd levels, check the MouseWait App for Crowd Index averages and wait times. Have a great week! - Admin Nov 30, 2015 2:56PM
