Good morning! This day in Disney history February 8th, 2001: Disney's second Anaheim park and eighth theme park in the world, Disney's California Adventure officially opened.
Disneys’s California Adventure is the centerpiece of a $1.4-billion expansion of what will now be called the Disneyland Resort. Located adjacent to Disney's original theme park, Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure celebrates the uniqueness of the Golden State, giving guests a taste of the fun, diversity and lifestyle found only in Californian. Also included in the expansion is the deluxe, 750-room Disney's Grand Californian Hotel (which opened January 2, 2001), and Downtown Disney (opened January 12, 2001), an exciting entertainment center with shopping, theaters and dining venues. Building this expansive project took more than three years and resulted in an additional 6,000 jobs, bringing the total employment at Disneyland Resort to 20,000, making Disneyland Resort Orange County’s largest single-site employer.
DCA on opening day, had four themed lands on 55-acres: Golden State, Hollywood Pictures Backlot, Paradise Pier and Sunshine Plaza. Park officials had planned for tens of thousands of Disney fans to visit the park on its first official day, but only a few hundred showed up for the opening ceremony.

Michael Eisner's dedication on this day included these words:
"To all who believe in the power of dreams … Welcome! Disney's California Adventure opens its golden gates to you. Here we pay tribute to the dreamers of the past … the native people, explorers, immigrants, aviators, entrepreneurs and entertainers who built the Golden State. And we salute a new generation of dreamers who are creating the wonders of tomorrow … from the silver screen to the computer screen … from the fertile farmlands to the far reaches of space. Disney's California Adventure celebrates the richness and the diversity of California … its land, its people its spirit and above all, the dreams that it continues to inspire."
