Best Post of the Day 2-8-14
Good morning! This day in Disney history February 8th, 2001: Disney's second Anaheim park and eighth theme park in the world, Disney's California Adventure officially opened.

DCA

rides

Disneys’s California Adventure is the centerpiece of a $1.4-billion expansion of what will now be called the Disneyland Resort. Located adjacent to Disney's original theme park, Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure celebrates the uniqueness of the Golden State, giving guests a taste of the fun, diversity and lifestyle found only in Californian. Also included in the expansion is the deluxe, 750-room Disney's Grand Californian Hotel (which opened January 2, 2001), and Downtown Disney (opened January 12, 2001), an exciting entertainment center with shopping, theaters and dining venues. Building this expansive project took more than three years and resulted in an additional 6,000 jobs, bringing the total employment at Disneyland Resort to 20,000, making Disneyland Resort Orange County’s largest single-site employer.

DCA on opening day, had four themed lands on 55-acres:  Golden State, Hollywood Pictures Backlot, Paradise Pier and Sunshine Plaza. Park officials had planned for tens of thousands of Disney fans to visit the park on its first official day, but only a few hundred showed up for the opening ceremony.

Michael Eisner's dedication on this day included these words:
"To all who believe in the power of dreams … Welcome! Disney's California Adventure opens its golden gates to you. Here we pay tribute to the dreamers of the past … the native people, explorers, immigrants, aviators, entrepreneurs and entertainers who built the Golden State. And we salute a new generation of dreamers who are creating the wonders of tomorrow … from the silver screen to the computer screen … from the fertile farmlands to the far reaches of space. Disney's California Adventure celebrates the richness and the diversity of California … its land, its people its spirit and above all, the dreams that it continues to inspire."

To watch a portion of the opening ceremony:

Who remembers this promo commercial?

I found a map from August 2001, I’m posting it as my main picture with the hopes that you’ll be able to enlarge it. If I post it within the post you could not. Notice, Disney's Electrical Parade had just opened. Tower of Terror did not exist. Disney's Steps in Time was playing at the Hyperion Theater. Eureka! - A California Parade rolled through the streets of DCA every day. There was no A Bug's Land. Superstar Limo and ABC Soap Opera Bistro were still open. Robert Mondavi and Wolfgang Puck were proud sponsors.
Lights! Camera! Chaos, on the other hand, had already been replaced. Crazy to think how much the park has changed huh?!

Were you there on opening day? What did you think of the original DCA?

Thanks for reading and watching! I hope you all have a super Saturday!

Thank-you, you too! πŸ’– - adisneyfamily  863.3 #192 3:09PM
i remember disneybefore dca and the former pumba parking where carsland was with tram service. to be honest my wife and I never went inside dca until disney offered a 2 day park hopper where you HAD to go to dl one day and dca the other. this was a plan to boost attendance into dca as it was never pulling in the crowds. they had already announced a dca remodal 2.0 at that time and the mickey head on screaming was already swithed on the fun wheel. when we first visited the orange stinger and maliboomer , toy story mania and miickeys fun wheel where already there. the original entrance, and the california garden section?. at this time the paradise pier lagoon was drained with the whole area was drained.there where some elements of the original dca i liked , for example the giant sun and meet n greet area where carthy circle now stands.for most park guest the main reasons for dca not being up to par with disneyland was for a lack of rides -family rides, not so disney related and price wise many felt that dl still offerd more. thank for this post - pikarich  3848.4 #27 11:33AM
Thanks for adding all that buddy! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘‹ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:34AM
I remember that promo.... Wasn't at the opening ceremony so thanks for sharing part of it today. Heck the first time I went to DCA Wasn't until 2005 😱. I could easily spend a whole day there.... I may just have to do that tomorrow to celebrate....  . Happy birthday DCA!!! Thanks for another great history post Duchess, hope you also have a super Saturday!!!  - GrumpyPirateDad  1830.8 #77 2:05PM
You're so welcome my πŸ’€ friend! I hope you DO get a chance to visit DCA today! Have a 🍸 at the cove for me ok? πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘‹ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:44AM
i remembered going there with friends during the week of their first anniversary, it was very quiet and not that much people - Flynnigan  215.2 #1713 6:45PM
The lack of people was kind of a plus to get away from the crowded feel of Disneyland! Kind of a nice getaway! Those days are gone but there are still more "open" spaces at DCA. - Mikesaxclar  553.4 #333 11:11PM
So true! I really love all the changes. And the still available space!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:35AM
Thank you, such a great post. Wasn't there on that opening day, but wow, sure enjoying this wonderful park Disney gave us.  - FrankenweenieVelinee  1944.6 #73 7:54AM

Awe! Didn't mean to make you cry! But I hope they were happy tears! Thank YOU! πŸ˜ƒ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 1:01PM
Wow! That opening day sequence reminds me of the Olympics. Cannot say that I am a fan of that. Think I preferred Ronnie and Art's just speaking. I choked up at seeing Roy- just knowing he was Walt's brother 😒. And Donald looks so different now. So much change-for the better😊 That family sure was lucky to be the first in. Miss those CALIFORNIA letters. Yes, I recall that ad.  Thanks, Duchess! - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  5221.0 #17 8:39AM
And it looks SOOO empty without Tower of terror, bugs land and with that farm area-which I never really got - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  5221.0 #17 8:49AM
::giggles:: it was weird huh? Awe! You're so cute! ::dabs your tears:: πŸ‘― I actually prefer the new entrance. Fits so well with the new theme! But the letters were neat! It's true! So odd without carsland, and bugsland! Oh how much it's improved! πŸ˜πŸ‘ we can easily spend the whole day there and have a great time!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 1:08PM

I'm on the pier, I work the fun wheel, silly swings, jumpin jellyfish and golden zephyr.  - CM_Tamstirr  552.5 #334 11:02PM
Thank you for this post. Watched video for the first time and like others cried. Wasn't there because I was 8 months pregnant and big as a house but I was a passholder. - TrampsLady  1641.5 #87 9:18AM
D'awe! You too! ::dabs your tears as well:: you're so welcome! Lol, I seriously doubt you were as big as a house! You're so silly. 😘  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 1:14PM

So funny. We were not there for this, but our first visit as a family was just four months prior, with our then year and a half old daughter.  We were just happy to go to Disneyland.  Our first visit to DCA was in May, 2003. We enjoyed it. We stayed at the Grand. I don't even want to think how little our 5-night stay with 5-day passes and all our meals was compared to today's costs!  πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. It was a lot of fun, but I definitely prefer today's DCA park. Toy Story Midway Mania, The Little Mermaid, all of Carsland, Monsters, Inc., Ariel's Grotto, Buena Vista Street, a World of Color--I can't imagine a park without them all!  And it definitely needed the Disney touch that it has since received from back in its opening days. Thank you, Duchess, for another great history lesson!  You continue to top yourself each time with all the great research and wonderful photos and videos you share with us!  πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ 😘. Have to use these now!          - MeridaFan  3523.7 #33 1:31PM
Bet that trip was a ball though! 😍 thanks for sharing all that sweetheart! I'm so happy you enjoy these! I wish I had more time to write them more regularly. But people like you always telling me you enjoy them make it so worth it! 😘 so thank YOU again!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:42AM
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Duchess! We visited opening day, very light crowds. It was definitely a half day park. I love how DCA has improved and matured over the years. Btw I received a souvenir map on opening day, will have to post a pic. - DiT22  238.5 #1404 1:47PM
Oh how cool! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ I couldn't find a good version online. Thank YOU!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:43AM
I wasn't there for opening either, but I remember going during the first year it opened and I was not thrilled with the park.  In fact my friends and I thought it would not last and that Disney was going to lose a lot of money.  That may have Bern true until they made the sweeping changes to the park.  I love it now.   - potatohead25  604.4 #298 2:17PM
I so agree! Something tells me you may enjoy the monsters inc attraction? 😊 - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:46AM
I wanted to go so badly for opening day but my first child was due in the next couple weeks (his 13th birthday is later this month) and no one would let me go (it was a couple hours drive from the hospital I was to deliver at LOL) It took a few years (and 1 more kid) before we finally got to go and see it (2005!). The last trip we had done the park was still being built (2000). It was taunting me! I must admit, I prefer it now that it's been rethemed. I wasn't a huge fan of the original theming. - Autoalice  160.6 #2465 2:38PM
What a fun story! I have to agree with you, the new attractions lands and themes are SO much better!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:47AM
As always Duchess, Great post!!! I remember that commercial, I thought it was cute and couldn't wait to go see DCA. We went the first year and we are very disappointed. It took a while but we really love all the improvements. - Boundin  598.7 #305 6:29PM
Always so kind my dear Boundin! Thank YOU! I don't think you were alone at all with those feelings! 😊 I love BVS! 😍😍😍😍😍 - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:48AM
Man I can't believe it has been 13 years since California adventure has been open. I have made so many memories there and it has grown so much since the opening. I hope more is to come from disney into this park. Happy Birthday California Adventure!  - Disneypirategirl  168.4 #2340 6:51PM
I know right? I'm feeling a but older then normal today! πŸ˜‚ I think your hopes will be realized, isnt it so neat how Disney is "never complete" πŸ˜πŸ‘ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:51AM
So fun to see all the changes!  I had a dry spell during college and didn't get to visit the resort for 5 years--I definitely wasn't there when it opened.  We did go to DL once in 2005, but my parents didn't want to pay to go to DCA 😒  I didn't see it until 2006 on my first trip with my husband (who was my bf at the time).  I missed a lot of those early attractions, but we have made so many memories there over the last 8 years!  It's been so fun to see it evolve from that sorta "identity crisis" in the earlier years, into a mature, well-themed park.  So fun!  - Spoonful_O_Sugar  579.3 #320 7:11PM
Did I mention "so fun?" πŸ˜‚ - Spoonful_O_Sugar  579.3 #320 7:57PM
You crack me up lady! 😊 thanks for sharing all that! It was "SO fun" to read! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:53AM

Does anyone else miss the Mickey head on Screamin'? I can't believe DCA has been open that long. Wow.  - RetroMinnie  54.6 #4338 8:29PM
It's crazy how fast time goes by huh?  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:54AM
I have a picture somewhere of these blue walls they had around the entrance of DCA.  For some reason, these walls had clear windows that you could look through to see the construction. - Woozle  42.4 #4757 8:30PM
That is odd!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:55AM
Fantastic Duchess !!   - polo33  63.9 #4096 10:07PM
πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘‹ thanks!  - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:57AM
I wasn't there for the opening day ceremony, but I went after work expecting crowds, and wondered "where is everybody"?  I liked the park even then, but boy, has it evolved into a terrific place today!   - redsoxcarlos  1573.0 #92 11:07PM
It really is amazing! πŸ‘ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:57AM
Incredible, so much I had forgotten like nothing back where tower of tower is.... LOL! And it was just a dead end there until recently. WOW! I understand the complaints but we loved the park from this time forward and it was great then, now it's mind blowing phenomenal! To us, being passholders it was just extra stuff being added, what was with all the complaints but I totally get why it not being a "full day"park was a problem for people paying full admission for a day. Being native Californians I think made Golden Dreams an emotional ride full of memories for us, so we even enjoyed that immensely. I konw, I know we're strange! Seeing Soarin the first time, the huge coaster, the Maliboomer was a thrill, the sun wheel, and even the campy Superstar Limo was a blast (if you were in the right frame of mind!).  - Mikesaxclar  553.4 #333 11:09PM
I love your attitude! I don't think you're strange at all!!! It's true! The parks are magical and amazing to us all! Thanks for sharing all that! πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ‘‹ - Duchess_SMK  5970.9 #15 6:59AM

http://cchealth.org/eh/retail-food/dog-law-faq.php Β  I know folks love theiri pets but I still do not think this is sanitary Β from a food perspective. See the url for CA law. Unless they provide a designated pet area outside, dogs cannot lick the plates/utensils, who cleans up after a dog accident......No pets in at a restaurant for now (service dogs are the exception). Disney is excellent with their food cleanliness in the parks per the Public health inspections. DTD does not fare as well per Retaurarant inspection. Check the Health Care Agency for the current restaurant inspections. As a Public health nurse I always check to see who is keeping clean in their kitchens. Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com

unFORECAST for the week of Monday May 4, 2015.

CROWD PREDICTION: Should be a light week. Please note that Disneyland Park closes at 7:30pm Wednesday and Thursday to prepare for the 60th Anniversary. Historical Crowd Index is in the 70s, but it could be lighter than that due to two short hour days. Look for it to pick up over the weekend as the Hatbox Ghost returns on Saturday, along with the premiere of the new Tomorrowland movie in Downtown Disney. - Admin May 5, 2015 2:58PM

We have always noticed that Saturdays are better than Sundays! We always come on the weekend and say we want to leave at dinner time on Sunday, but always leave by 11-12 because there are so many people. We love Saturday!! - 1Princess3Princes  373.4 #558 5:39PM
I agree. I think it has to do with most passes being blocked - PoohSizedGuy  18.5 #6948 11:53PM
I love these posts!  I do have a question/request/suggestion...is there a way to only show the 3-4 most recent posts?  It's a lot to scroll through. @@Admin - TiggersAndTinks  123.1 #3037 5:08AM
I second this. The info is great to have, but it's too long.  - 1HitchhikingGhost  227.7 #1551 5:04PM
Thanks for these updates. I love them!  - Dizkid  362.5 #579 6:07PM
It's Dance the Magic this weekend-always adds to the crowds too!!! - TinkerSchelle  1454.4 #100 8:23PM
What is dance the magic?? - bks4lou  181.2 #2152 4:40PM
Dance studios sign up and dancers come and do a little "pre-parade" along the route. It's cute ;) - TinkerSchelle  1454.4 #100 1:05PM
@bks4lou sorry-I just saw this question ;) - TinkerSchelle  1454.4 #100 1:06PM
