once stood, Star Tours cost $32 million to create. It is the park's first attraction not to use Disney-designed imagery.
Star Wars characters Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, the Ewoks, and Princess Leia were present for the big premiere, and a futuristic Minnie Mouse, C-3PO, then chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company Michael Eisner,George Lucas, and of course Mickey (in a space suit) participated in the exciting silver-wand ribbon-cutting ceremony. The lovely Carrie Fisher, taking part in the festivities:
Who remembers this commercial?
The opening of the attraction celebration lasted for 60 hours! Guests could pay one-time admission into the park and get their hand stamped then return anytime from Friday to Sunday. Guests were also given a Star Tours Watch when they entered. The attraction featured the voices of Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman) as Rex the pilot droid, Anthony Daniels as the voice of C-3PO, Steve Gawley as Red Leader, Dennis Muren as one of three ILMers (visible in a Maintenance Bay window), and Brian Cummings as the Vid-Screen announcer.
A few people showed up….::shrug::
I came across this on jimhillmedias website and it made me giggle, thought some of you may enjoy it too:
“There's kind of a funny story about Michael Eisner at the grand opening of Disneyland's "Star Tours." Disney's CEO was supposed to introduce each of the "Star Wars" characters as they came on stage. But -- for the life of him -- Michael couldn't get C3PO's name right. So -- whenever Eisner tried to introduce the gold-plated droid -- it would always come out as PC3O. Which -- for some odd reason -- sounded vaguely obscene.
So -- all through the rehearsal of the grand opening ceremony for "Star Tours" -- the Imagineers tried to drill this into Michael's head: "It's C3PO. C3PO. C-3-P-O."
And Eisner would say right back to them: "Right. I've got it now. PC3O."
Finally -- with the hope that a visual aid might help out Michael -- WDI had a cue card made. Which spelled out -- in 2-foot tall letters -- "C-3-P-O."
And then -- when the crucial moment came in "Star Tours" 's actual grand opening ceremony -- an Imagineer held up the card so Eisner could clearly see how the droid's name was pronounced. Michael still managed to get it wrong.
Which just goes to show you : Just because you're a CEO doesn't mean that you actually know your C3POs from your PC3Os.”
I also found a great interview with Tom Fitzgerald (Exectutive VP & Senior Creative Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering) on endorexpress.net if you like to read more.
The Star Tours universe would soon expand even further, blasting off at Tokyo Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 1989 and at Disneyland Paris in 1992.
Were YOU at this event? Did you like the original Star Tours? Do you miss it? What are your favorite Star Tours memories?
Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a terrific Thursday!
