Best Post of the Day 1-9-14
Good morning! This day in Disney history, January 9th, 1987: Star Tours opened in Tomorrowland!

Occupying the space where Adventure Thru Inner Space
once stood, Star Tours cost $32 million to create.  It is the park's first attraction not to use Disney-designed imagery.

Star Wars characters Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, the Ewoks, and Princess Leia were present for the big premiere, and a futuristic Minnie Mouse, C-3PO, then chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company Michael Eisner, George Lucas, and of course Mickey (in a space suit) participated in the exciting silver-wand ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Who remembers this commercial?

The opening of the attraction celebration lasted for 60 hours! Guests could pay one-time admission into the park and get their hand stamped then return anytime from Friday to Sunday. Guests were also given a Star Tours Watch when they entered. The attraction featured the voices of Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman) as Rex the pilot droid, Anthony Daniels  as the voice of C-3PO, Steve Gawley as Red Leader, Dennis Muren as one of three ILMers (visible in a Maintenance Bay window), and Brian Cummings as the Vid-Screen announcer.

A few people showed up….::shrug::

crowd

I came across this on jimhillmedias website and it made me giggle, thought some of you may enjoy it too:
“There's kind of a funny story about Michael Eisner at the grand opening of Disneyland's "Star Tours." Disney's CEO was supposed to introduce each of the "Star Wars" characters as they came on stage. But -- for the life of him -- Michael couldn't get C3PO's name right.

So -- whenever Eisner tried to introduce the gold-plated droid -- it would always come out as PC3O. Which -- for some odd reason -- sounded vaguely obscene.
So -- all through the rehearsal of the grand opening ceremony for "Star Tours" -- the Imagineers tried to drill this into Michael's head: "It's C3PO. C3PO. C-3-P-O."
And Eisner would say right back to them: "Right. I've got it now. PC3O."
Finally -- with the hope that a visual aid might help out Michael -- WDI had a cue card made. Which spelled out -- in 2-foot tall letters -- "C-3-P-O."
And then -- when the crucial moment came in "Star Tours" 's actual grand opening ceremony -- an Imagineer held up the card so Eisner could clearly see how the droid's name was pronounced. Michael still managed to get it wrong.
Which just goes to show you : Just because you're a CEO doesn't mean that you actually know your C3POs from your PC3Os.”

I also found a great interview with Tom Fitzgerald (Exectutive VP & Senior Creative Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering) on endorexpress.net if you like to read more.

The Star Tours universe would soon expand even further, blasting off at Tokyo Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 1989 and at Disneyland Paris in 1992.

Were YOU at this event? Did you like the original Star Tours? Do you miss it? What are your favorite Star Tours memories?

Thanks for reading and watching! Hope you all have a terrific Thursday!

I was there! In fact, my friend Cris said she still has her watch. I think mine is packed away. We were freshmen at the University of La Verne. We went late Friday and stayed til early morning Saturday. We drove back to campus, slept and went to Videopolis to dance that night.  - ythdudette  1174.1 #128 10:12AM

😊 why thank you Sir!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:06AM
I was there a short time later.  I made my parents wait in a 4 hour line to ride.  They had people dressed up as robots dancing for people in the line.  Remember it was the 80s so they had on lots of silver spandex and neon wigs and the like.  I miss Captain Rex and always say hi when I pass him sadly in his box in the new queue line.  I do enjoy the new version, but sometimes miss the old one too.  Glad I could experience both.  Still one of my all time favs. - Dawnsharks  49.5 #4472 12:39PM
Dancing people dressed up as robots?! Awesome! See that's the stuff they don't write down! Thank you for sharing that with us!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:07AM
Whoa, look at all of those people!!  I wasn't there opening day but rode later that summer.  This was fun to read about, thanks for posting!!  I have to admit...I wasn't much of a Star Tours fan before I had kids but  they both love the new one so much so now I do too.  😊 - MinnieMousewife  810.1 #199 9:05AM
Yeah, just a few...😂. It would be so fun to see those cute boys of yours on this attraction! How could you not love it! Thank YOU! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 9:29AM

I remember going on it a few months after it opened. I was very young but so stoked on it being Star Wars; I literally thought we took off into space for a few minutes haha. Childhood DL memories 😊 - apesandmonkeys  6521.6 #12 9:28AM

😳 no? Oh neat! So glad you enjoyed it doll! You're welcome! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:08AM
I remember them showing commercials for this ride non stop on TV. I wanted to ride it so bad! I got to just a year after it opened, but at the time it felt like FOREVER! - tuesday737  1254.8 #115 9:40AM
😂 me too! That's why I added the commercial in the post. Brought back memories! Time goes so slow when you're a kid huh? ☺️ - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:09AM
I haven't rode much in the last ten years or so as it started making me not feel well. I always got a kick out of the hostess of the pre-boarding video, aka: bun lady). - HalfCaff  426.6 #461 9:41AM
The old version always madeybtummy hurt too! 😔 ha! The bun lady was awesome!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:15AM

Hi! 👋 awe! ☺️ - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:17AM
Good morning! I was not fortunate enough to attend this event..... Although by the looks of the crowd picks.... Fortunate my not be the right word.... Hehe. I believe I was only able to catch the original flight once and though I don't remember it we'll enough to miss it I do remember Rex. He still short circuits from time to time when we pass him in customs to remind us how much of a blast he was. Thank you for the history. Have a terrific Thursday miss!!! - GrumpyPirateDad  1830.8 #76 10:13AM
👋 I think you may have been right. Opening day looked a bit busy! Thank YOU Sir! 😊 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:19AM
When I was a younger man, I was smaller man. When Star Tours first opened, the cast members used to wear these really nice silver jackets. I had to have one of those jackets so I bought one. I still have that jacket there's only one sad thing about it doesn't fit me anymore. I reached for it to sell on eBay a couple times. My sons too tall so it doesn't fit him right. That attraction was so fantastic when it opened. I know this is going a bit long.  My brother was from Oregon came down for Thanksgiving.   - Midasgold  605.2 #297 11:30AM
Sorry I pushed post trying to get to the screen. I placed a minute chair I started tossing that chair around one leg two legs back forward side to side imitating the actions of the ride. We went to next year. Thank you for your posts Duchess.  - Midasgold  605.2 #297 11:31AM
😍 bet that jacket is so cool! I loved reading that! You always have such good stories! Thank YOU for sharing with us! 👋😘 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:20AM
This post was fun to read. I love this ride and miss the lady on the tv who instructs you on the rules before you enter. Her side bun was awesome. - adventurerEnDisneylandia {AED}  808.2 #200 11:58AM
😂 bun lady was indeed awesome! You are the second who mentioned her!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:21AM

Oh yay! I'm so glad! You're welcome! Thanks for telling me! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:21AM
I love the new version but definitely still miss the old StarWars ride. - ChristopherRobin661  269.3 #1080 12:35PM
Classic vs new is so hard to compare. I agree they both arew/were good!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:22AM
I think the new star tours is better but the original brings back great childhood memories - philliprocks  1050.8 #152 1:22PM
Agreed!!! I get less motion sickness on the new one too! 👏 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:23AM
When I first started going to DL four years ago I was blown away that my two all time favorite childhood (And current probably) movies had attractions, being star wars and indiana jones. - madsdad  1846.8 #75 1:24PM
Disney does such a good job Turing movies into attractions huh? 😍 so awesome!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:23AM
I was there it was my 11 bday so my parents took me up not realizing it was the opening.. Haha to them - sunshinegrl  348.8 #616 2:53PM
How cool! Did you get a watch?  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:24AM
The original star tours..... still operates at its final disney park in paris with not date if it will be converted to star tours 2.0. The ride simulators used cost $500,000. because they are of military grade simultators and because of how the ride is constructed can till and move around in a 35 degree x,y and z axis.I enjoyed the old star tours very much and glad i got it recorded since michael was not tall enough to ride. many of the original elements are still in the star tours 2.0 including the admiral in the space port room and capt rex as a deffective unit still says some lines from the original ride during power shorts.the reference #1401 and the paging of sacul egroeg (george Lucas). - pikarich  3621.4 #28 3:21PM
Always a plethora of knowledge Sir! Thank you!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:24AM
I was a host on Submarine Voyage when Star Tours opened...I admit to being jealous of the CMs on that attraction.  I was trained and then became a host on Star Tours in 1988-90.  I liked the flightsuit costumes of that era especially the orange ones worn by the female CMs as they were closer to looking like Star Wars flightsuits. - BombFrogFormerCM  818.3 #196 4:22PM
I remember you mentioning you used to work on the subs! Lol, I bet those costumes were neat! Plus, they got to go to endor everyday, how cool is that?! 😊 thanks for sharing!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:26AM
I did a Christmas and summer on Star Tours...they had a better break room! - BombFrogFormerCM  818.3 #196 8:54AM
The original Star Tours was a mind blowing experience in it's time and was a great ride that we still rode on every trip right up until the reboot. The 2.0 version is obviously an improvement with more variety but something about taking that final run through the trough leading to the exhaust port can't be beat! Such an incredible feeling like you are right in the original film! - Mikesaxclar  553.4 #327 4:41PM
Excellent points! The classic version will always be remembered! J just love how Disney can really transport you to another world like no other! Thanks for your comment! 😊 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:29AM

I liked the old one because I'm not really a fan of 3d. - HasAnyoneSeenMyGlassSlipper  646.8 #272 6:05PM
Really? Awe, do you still ride the new version or no?  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:30AM
I still ride it because it's my kid's favorite. Last time we were on it, Captain America sat right behind me and I blocked his view with my Minnie ears. Whoops!😁 - HasAnyoneSeenMyGlassSlipper  646.8 #272 7:07AM
Memories... I was there the summer after this ride opened. Several hours spend in the queue, for sure! - Diz_Mel  92.5 #3538 9:16PM
That's cool! Wow! Commitment! I think the longest I've waited in a line was 2 hours. 😬 idk if I'd do it again either. 😂 - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:33AM
I remember when this first opened!!! We were waiting in line with my Dad and we laughed so hard when the worker droid turned around and said "hi Dad!" Perfect timing!  - PixiePirateMaid  312.9 #752 12:09AM
😂😂😂😂 now that's a cool Star Tours memory! Thanks for sharing that!  - Duchess_SMK  5909.5 #14 6:33AM

Disneyland unFORECAST (BETA) is here! Top MouseWaiters giving you the rundown of what's happening at the Disneyland Resort. The unFORECAST now has its own page on the web www.unFORECAST.com

unForecast for week of Monday, March 9, 2015:

Park Hours: DL: 9am-10pm (Monday-Thursday), 8am-12am (Friday-Sunday). DCA: 9am-9pm (Monday-Thursday), 8am-10pm (Friday-Sunday).

Taste Pilots Grill in DCA will reopen as Smokejumpers Grill on March 13 as apart of the new-themed area, Grizzly Air Field.

Attraction Closures: Critter Country (opens 4/3), Fortuosity Jewelry Shop (opens 3/13), Magic Eye Theater (TBD), Matterhorn (opens 5/16), Peter Pan (opens 5/8), Snow White Grotto (opens 5/1), Starcade (TBD), Soarin over California (opens 5/15), Grizzly River Run (opens 3/20), Luigi's Flying Tires (2016), World of Color (TBD).

unForecast Crowd Prediction: This week is the unofficial start of the Spring Break crowds, so expect the parks to be a little more crowded than normal. Also with only one showing of Fantasmic during the week, expect FPs for the show to go quickly along with it being crowded around the Rivers of America close to showtime. Throughout the week, expect CIs to be in the high 60s to low 80s for Disneyland Park and in the low 70s to low 80s for DCA.

Have a great week!
