Does anyone have minis who are reading Junie B. Jones books?  There is a book Junie B. Jones and her Big Fat Mouth.  This is a book that my 6 year old was given by her teacher as a recommendation for her to read.  Well there is a part in it where it says that Mickey isn't real and that it's just a mouse suit with a guy inside.  Well my mini was brought to tears and now is wondering why anybody would think that Mickey isn't real.  Any recommendations on what to tell her?  She is now asking me about every character in Disneyland!!

I highly doubt that the teacher read the book and most likely she was unaware of what was in it. I didn't usually read books before my son read them, he just picked them out and read. As much as we want to, we can't protect our kids innocence as long as we would like to. There's always that one commercial, TV show or kid in the class that ruins a little bit of the magic we so badly want our babies to keep believing in.   I'm sure it was an honest mistake on the teacher's part.  - nerdgirl  82.4 #3705 6:52PM
My mom didn't read a lot of the things I picked out either, and sometimes it was a good thing because it provided an opportunity for frank and real family discussions on hard topics.  - Spoonful_O_Sugar  569.8 #320 7:17PM
My aunt gave me Silence of the Lambs for Christmas one year.  I was 14.  I don't think she had read the book or seen the movie yet.  Let's just say that as graphic as the movie is...the book is waaay worse.  πŸ˜ - bluefairy  643.3 #274 9:47PM
So sorry that happened. At 6 years old she will understand. We were all disappointed when we learned these truths (Santa, Easter Bunny, etc) but we all came to terms with it just fine and now we enjoy letting our imagination take over. Kids are very resilient and move forward pretty quickly.  - DisneyGrandma  833.8 #193 6:00PM
I totally agree. My kids are toddlers and know that they are "not real." It doesn't spoil the fun! At this point, I wouldn't recommend lying to her--just talk up the fun of it all.  - Diz_Mel  92.5 #3538 6:20PM
@Diz_Mel I agree with you 100%. I also think it might be harder for a child to realize they've been "fooled" or "lied to". Just be honest and talk up the fun. Even if Mickey is a person in a suit, Disney, is still a wonderful place to visit and that in itself, is magical. - MrsGoodface  58.9 #4187 8:30PM
I'm really confused why you would blame the teacher for this book.. They probably just recommended it because it's her grade level, and a good series for kids. But I wouldn't just straight out blame them for this. I think you handled it fine telling her the story isn't real, that way she finds out when she's ready to know. But just know you can't protect them forever. I found out Santa wasn't real on my own, but I had already known πŸ˜‚ I just confirmed it myself when I found the suit at my uncles house πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ - MEHlanie_Mouse  1114.5 #138 8:17PM
Spoiler alert!!!! 😭😭😭😭 - GreenLantern  746.6 #222 8:30PM
You sound like my sister, snooping around the house.  - TheNewTrent  748.0 #221 8:35PM
Well, we are related, soo..... Makes sense - MEHlanie_Mouse  1114.5 #138 8:37PM
We are? 😳😳 - TheNewTrent  748.0 #221 8:44PM
I don't have kids but I would go off on that teacher. Who gives her the right to tell children when they have to stop believing in Mickey Mouse or anything else. Oh, and my parents are both teachers and would say the same thing and the best Christmas present I ever got was The Polar Express book when I was in my early 30's and my Mom wrote in it,"To Michele, Who always believed! Love, Mom" πŸŽ…πŸŽ…πŸŽ…πŸŽ…πŸŽ…πŸŽ… Mickey Mouse and everything else is REAL!!! - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:09PM
I say the same thing...i always say just because the real Santa doesn't need to come to my house doesn't mean he isn't going to SOMEONE's house! πŸ˜‰πŸŽ… - TinkerSchelle  1428.8 #98 6:21PM
I agree!!!!!  I'm so disappointed with this teacher.  How dare she take something so special away from a child.  Its one thing when the kids start to question the characters and Santa on their own but they don't need to read about it.  Luckily she just told me that she knows all the princesses are real because she can see their faces.  I'm hoping by the time we go back in July the magic will be there for her.  I told her the book was telling a fake story and I put it back in her backpack with a nice little note to the teacher.   - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:22PM
Well done-when she's ready, she will be ready to understand-obviously-she wants to hold on longer-so let her!  - TinkerSchelle  1428.8 #98 6:26PM
I love the Polar Express!! Maybe sit down and watch the movie again, which is all about choosing to believe.  - debbiev  945.7 #171 6:27PM
@debbiev Yeah, hubby and I pause it and make hot chocolate at the time it's served so we can have some too! LOL I love it! - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:43PM
That's a great idea debbiev.  Thanks!  Maybe I'll go out and buy the book too.  MrsSchnooks-  I may steal your mom's message I love it! - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:44PM
Please steal it! That's why I tell that story. I had a serious meltdown when I came running home from school one day asking my Mom to get the pics of Santa visiting our house so I could show all the kids at school that he was real. I was sick as a kid so my parents brought Santa to me at times. One of the worst days of my life! You ask my Mom if anything scarred me as a child and she'll straight up tell you it was the day we had the "talk" at the kitchen table. I asked her a million questions and she couldn't keep up like TinkerSchelle's quick thinking. LOL Everything unraveled, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, unicorns that poop rainbows! Poor Mom. LOL But can you imagine how cruel the kids could have been to me if she say anything? The kids then tried to tell me there was no such thing as mustard. I liked mustard. Fond memories!!! Said no one EVER!!! LOL - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:58PM
*didn't - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:59PM
maybe i misunderstood but i thought the book said Mickey Mouse wasn't real and not the teacher? - nicoleface  1749.9 #78 7:45PM
I can't imagine there was malicious intent.  As a teacher, I am always cognizant of what I say to kids about things like this.  I can't read every book ever written, so sometimes I have to rely on recommendations from others, or from the computer system we use.  When you buy a book on amazon, it recommends other books it thinks you might like, do you blame them if you don't?   - bluefairy  643.3 #274 9:58PM
So your saying the characters aren't real? I'm going to keep believing that belle is real - philliprocks  1040.4 #154 7:02AM
I'm so sorry that happened, it's really hard to have someone else break your child's heart like that. My daughter had the same type of experience last year in 5th grade when her teacher accidentally spilled the jelly beans about the Easter Bunny. We have had to have the same types of discussions with our young ones too. The kids in their classes the last couple years have  told them Santa wasn't real. I told them that Santa is the spirit of Christmas..the spirit of love and giving. If you believe in the spirit of Christmas than you will receive a gift I have also told them that sometimes they may be the spirit of Christmas and be the one giving the gift. My 12 year old decided this year that he wanted to get into the true meaning for Christmas for him "Jesus's birth" he decided to be the spirit of Christmas this year and is donating what would have been his gift from Santa to a child in the Phillipines. It was one of the proudest moments of my life with him. Stick to your beliefs, and explain that people all over the world believe in different things. It's the feeling that Mickey (or any character) brings to our hearts that makes him real to each person. Hugs! - 2BeignetOrNot2Beignet  1087.9 #145 11:29PM
Thank you for sharing your story!  Your son is very thoughtful!!!  It is definitely something to be proud of!   - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:49AM
Awwwww - mickeyat78  1655.7 #84 6:58AM
I just adore him! Good job Mom!!!! I know how proud of him you are! 😘😘😘 - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 7:05AM
My kids are now 12, 9 & 4. All of them know that it is a person in a costume. We are involved in costuming communities so it was going to happen. It also helped them be a lot less scared of the costumed characters. But, the truth is, when they see Mickey Mouse standing there on Main Street that really is Mickey Mouse to them. Even though they know better, it just is. There is something about walking through those gates that immediately make them not care or think about it. I am 43 years old and even I get that little sparkle in my eyes because that is still Mickey Mouse to me. Just tell her that if she wants to believe then it is true and that's all that matters. My 12 year old has asked a coupe times if it was still OK for him to be excited that he "met" Chip and Dale, he felt a little foolish because he should be "too old". I told him of course it was OK! That's who he met. They were acting, the costumes were them. He felt a whole lot better and hasn't asked past those first couple times. - Autoalice  160.5 #2456 11:53PM
I agree. I always told my son and step son if you believe they will come. I'm glad they always believed πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰ otherwise I don't know what I would have done - DebbyMouse7531  492.7 #13 9:12AM
Oh dear, that's too bad...time for you to be creative. When we questioned why the Santa that came to our house to bounce us on his knee (who was a work friend of my dad's) arrived in a red convertible instead of a sleigh, my parents told us that he couldn't use his sleigh because there was no snow. I bought it totally! - debbiev  945.7 #171 6:17PM
Right?!?!! I love that!  - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:18PM
That is great!!!  My oldest is 9 and I'm sure he is going to be questioning Santa soon! - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:26PM
I'm so sorry :(. While I don't have much advice, I think you do need to drop the teacher an email and let her know what happened. - Linzee  1003.7 #164 6:21PM
She's getting a 'nice' email and a note attached to the book that I'm having my daughter bring back in tomorrow.   - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:27PM
This is such a bummer. I have 4 sons who grew up watching Day at Disneyland a few times a day and I remember when my oldest, Rett, started asking questions on his own...he thought the face characters were real because they talked, but soon he got to the place where he didn't understand why Mickey and pals couldn't talk! I told him ttheir voices are so small, they need microphones! (Hey-I was caught off-guard!😜) Then I remember when he realized Mickey was at Disneyland AND Disneyworld! He asked if there were two Mickeys! Immediately I told him, "No-he just has a really fast jet and goes back and forth!"πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚βœˆ Eventually, when he was ready-he realized what was up and didn't ask. But i think letting him believe the magic is part of the reason it still is so ENDEARING to him to this day-even though he is 20!!!😍✨✨✨✨✨✨ - TinkerSchelle  1428.8 #98 6:35PM
You are so precious!!! I love that!!!  - MrsSchnooks  3008.7 #38 6:41PM
Thank you for sharing that!  It brought a smile to my face and a tear in my eye at the same time!  My 9 year old son was definitely starting to ask questions when we were there over the summer and trying to figure out how Mickey is in CA  and FL and I said it's part of Disney magic and he just said OK and that was the end of it.  I'm sure his wheels are turning but deep down he doesn't want to think that the characters are fake.   - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 6:41PM
Like Santa-why can't there be stand-in helpers for the real one somewhere!?! I don't KNOW it isn't true....πŸ˜‰βœ¨βœ¨βœ¨βœ¨ - TinkerSchelle  1428.8 #98 6:59PM
Tell her he truth.......this is a good chance to talk about faith and belief and the joy that it can bring......just because Mickey isn't real it doesn't mean the feelings that his idea produces aren't..... - georgieporgie  183.6 #2101 8:32PM
What..... Mickey isn't real????He's real to me, just like Minnie, Donald, daisy, Pluto....... Should I go on??That's the great thing about Disneyland is that it's ok to play make believe at any age!! - Superspacemountainfan  82.8 #3701 8:40PM
When our daughter asked if Santa, Easter Bunny, Mickey, etc were real, we asked her what she felt in her heart. She always said she believed they are real. She never asked again, even though she knew the "truth". She'll be 19 next month and is telling her 5 & 7 year old cousins the same thing.  - toniasmith  340.9 #636 10:41PM
When I was growing up my father let us play along well into our teens that Santa was still coming Christmas Eve if we still believed, so we all went along with it willingly and it was magical on Christmas morning to go out and see what "Santa" left under the tree and in our stocking.   A few years ago when my now 12 year old questioned me,I told her the same thing.."well, do you want Santa to still visit you each year?  Then you have to believe..wink wink". So she has a ball writing him letters that get answered every year and leaving him milk and cookies and listening for the reindeer too arrive.  And on Christmas morning Santa has magically left items under the tree and in her handmade stocking on the wall.  Its all in fun and magic of celebrating our inner child!  If this makes me crazy then I embrace it!!!   - TrampsLady  1641.1 #85 8:09AM
Oh I love that. I Going to do that. I have an 11 year d who still desperately wants to believe. Daddy thinks he's too old but I'm going to say what your dad said. Thanks.  - TrueFromOzLovesDisney  459.6 #422 8:14AM
I like that. Seems kids are a little too worldly too young these days. Kudos if your're able to preserve their innocence  a little bit longer. - HalfCaff  426.6 #461 8:18AM
Love this TrampsLady!!!  Thanks for sharing!!  - Ldgsg  209.4 #1789 9:08AM
