Paging all of my MW family! We had Jack's annual IEP (individual educational program) meeting today! All went well for the first time in nearly 2 years! No attorneys were involved for the first time in a year! Money saved will be spent at the parks I'm sure during our trip during Veterans' Day weekend! His new teacher, new aide and new therapies are showing results for him succeeding in general education classes while living with high functioning autism. Jack got this bear at build-a-bear, dressed him up like Woody from Toy Story! Please notice the bear's paws...they have the autism awareness puzzle piece, Jack knows the symbol and picked this bear all by himself! Sorry for the long post, just so happy for him!

It is so nice to hear good news at an iep. My son's iep's were so stressful and even with a lawyer it amazed me how much folks were inconvenienced with my son's autism. The best iep was the last one when I highlighted all the parents rights/laws they were breaking and enrolled in private home school. Never been happier and jimmy improved 3 grade levels in one year. Wow was I stupid for waiting so long to change - Plumiegirl  10135.2 #8 8:04PM
I always have problems with my son's iep. They put him in regular classes and he's doing horrible. I keep telling them to change him back to his RSP classes but they are not listening to me. I was also considering home school but I work full time 😐 - nicealex77  726.1 #267 8:11PM
I'm glad Jimmy made that jump!  I might do that if/when the time comes.  So far Jack is a grade ahead in math and 2 ahead in reading, it's just the social.  Last year his teacher snuck a union rep in the IEP meeting saying she was a specialist when she was not...that's when we got an attorney who specializes in these matters.  The teacher last year said it was too much work to deal with Jack and wanted to just send him to a different school that has a special day class...guess she didn't realize Mrs.Frog and I each have more degrees than her and we aren't afraid of anything when it comes to our children.  She just didn't want to be bothered by him. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 8:13PM
My mom is retired but a credentialed teacher, I really lucked out on this. I have taken care of her with whatever she needs. - Plumiegirl  10135.2 #8 8:15PM
This is wonderful news!  Jack is so fortunate to have two such loving and devoted parents. Well done all the way around.  - DisneyGrandma  877.2 #210 8:55PM
Thank you! Β Just hate that last year we had to spend $8k on legal fees, that could have gone elsewhere... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:06PM
I am so glad it is going well for your son! As a teacher I'm really sad to hear about all the problems you and others have with the IEP process and teachers that didn't want to work with you and listen to you. It really needs to be a cooperative process with the same goal in mind... The best interest of the child! - CobbPR  7283.3 #12 9:50PM
I completely agree!  We could let Jack skip a grade academically, but he needs to learn social skills with those his own age... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:58PM
Very well said! I have the Opportunity to sit on both sides of the table when it comes to IEP and rest of the Special Education process. It is not easy process, for parents, specialists or educators. When the needs of the child remain the focus for all parties and drives the process - then the likelihood for success and good outcomes increases tremendously! - DreadPiratesRogers  846.9 #219 12:01AM
On the flip side, what if you were a regular ed teacher with 30+ students, all equally deserving of your attention?  Yes, accommodations must be made in order to mainstream students with special needs, but sometimes the least restrictive environment is simply not a classroom that is already bursting at the seams.   - bluefairy  643.8 #313 10:14PM
I would agree with that, but that was not the case.  The class sizes are 24 students. Jack has a one on one aide.   The other teacher took him and he did well, the original teacher wanted him sent to a different school in a special day class.  We wanted the least restrictive environment and Jack's RSP agreed with us.  This teacher snuck in her union rep under false pretenses and we did file a protest against her and it was accepted by the school district's attorney. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 10:25PM
Yay Jack! Glad to hear things are going well for him in school. Cute Sheriff Woody bear.  - KermitFan13  653.7 #306 7:50PM
Wow that is great!! Yes IEP's can at times be stressful. I'm so glad that the school is fulfilling their duties and your son is improving because everyone is working together. Congrats for Jack in such an impressive accomplishment. - BellesLibrary  411.9 #537 7:51PM
Wonderful news, thanks for sharing! - ShariRenee  8577.7 #9 7:52PM
Way to go Jack!!!  That is exceptional news!  IEPs can be stressful to say the least.   - TiggersAndTinks  171.0 #2393 7:53PM
Very happy for you and your son! And that's a really cute little bear! - debbiev  1170.7 #151 7:55PM
Wonderful to hear that Jack is excelling! I know my cousin gets super stressed with the IEP for her daughter so I am glad it went well. - missmimi90  2032.0 #76 7:59PM
Awesome news, great reasons to celebrate! :) - piratelife4me  1047.3 #175 8:03PM
Great news! It must be very difficult but he's lucky to have good parents that support him!!! - goofydad909  1988.0 #80 8:04PM
I'm lucky to have him and his sister in my life! - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 8:22PM
The biggest issue is I got the lawyer, had the iep exactly like I wanted but they put the same folks that could not change, were not creative, and were so negative. Home school allowed me to enriched his learning environment so much more with less stress. - Plumiegirl  10135.2 #8 8:19PM
My son's school contacted the school district's lawyers...turns out the attorney they sent served in Iraq with the 1st Air Cav, he knows who I am and who I served with...this got a lot done in our favor really quickly.  What can I say, don't make an EOD dive officer angry...nobody likes to see a frogman angry. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 8:29PM
Im happy to to hear this good news. One more thing to celebrate when you come. That bear is so cute.  - iLOVELUCYnDISNEY  951.4 #196 8:34PM

Yay Jack. Such awesome news. Where did you get his build a bear from? I would absolutely love to order one for my best friends autistic son.  - Tinkerbellmom4  440.2 #497 8:53PM
The Build-a-Bear workshop started carrying them last April for Autism Awareness. Some stores carry them but you can order it off their website and have it shipped to a store near you to assemble there... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:01PM
I looked on their website and it shows nothing. Did you get this one from down town disney? - Tinkerbellmom4  440.2 #497 10:08PM
I know that the Build-a-Bear Workshop in both Hillsdale and Valley Fair Shopping Centers can order them as of last Thursday... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 10:19PM

How exciting.... - MinnieMyLove  207.3 #1905 9:08PM
Good job Jack. Hope he continues to improve. One of my friends is an aide and works with children with autism daily. She says the most frustrating thing is some teachers who will not change. Luckily she has had a couple of great ones recently. - warchanted  167.3 #2448 9:10PM
well done,  and the bear is so very cute !! - Sleepingbeautysmom  319.5 #803 9:16PM
That is such good news!! Yay! You deserve a trip to Disneyland! 😊😊😊 - misschurro  6362.1 #17 9:16PM

Ohhh! Believe you me.. i would LOVE that!!! Heehee - misschurro  6362.1 #17 9:33PM

Sounds great! I'll start packing!! - misschurro  6362.1 #17 9:48PM
I know! After I won Atora's super ariel RAK I got all cocky and went out and bought lottery tickets.. I figured if I was lucky enough to win that super awesome RAK, well then the lottery must be nextπŸ€πŸ€ I'll keep trying😁 - 2BeignetOrNot2Beignet  1422.0 #121 9:52PM
Congrats on the successful IEP. I work with an autistic student and always feel so bad when his mom has to bring in the attorney to his meetings. Love the bear, I have one too. - Mommadisneyfan  40.7 #5186 9:17PM
Everyone said it was the "best" interest of the student but in our case last year the teacher did not want to do one thing out of her norm nor anything more than what the union said she was required to do... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:56PM
Great to hear he got great results! Can't wait to meet him and the rest of the family during Veteran's Day weekend! Thanks for the HJ sticker also! - SpiritOfAdventure  1044.8 #176 9:20PM
No worries, we'll see you then!  It was funny when the school district's attorney showed up at the second IEP meeting last year...he was a JAG officer for 1st Air Cav and knew of me from comments I had made at a RoE briefing... - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:47PM
That's great news! I seem to recall my brother having IEP meeting though I am sure his with my parents weren't anything stressful. That's great that he has a teacher and workers that are able to help him succeed!  - starwarsmamma  561.6 #360 9:24PM
Best wishes for a successful school year for Jack!  So glad that you had a good IEP meeting and managed a good outcome without the stress and expense of needing legal counsel. - DreadPiratesRogers  846.9 #219 12:08AM
Jack is such a smart boy, very observant. He started watching The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon is his favorite character. I asked him why and he told me because they like the same things. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:38AM
Fantastic news!!!!  - Cinderella_Schnooks  3370.7 #42 12:11AM
Awesome!  Thanks for sharing! - drskookie  378.9 #593 12:49AM
As a mom who has attended IEPs for autistic kids, I know how stressful going ton those annual meetings can be. It's great news that he is doing well and that mainstreaming is an option for him. It should be the goal of any student with an IEP to reach that goal if possible because mainstreaming offers social skills that a special day class just can't. So happy for you guys!! - lassengirl  159.8 #2567 12:53AM
We want Jack to be treated no differently than any other child in the class.  Yes he needs an aide but that us to keep him on task.  His own teacher said if you give him a math test that takes the class 39 mins that he finishes it in 5 mins (all correct).  She has him read to other members of his class.  We were told that academically he could easily skip a grade but socially we are keeping him with his peers. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 9:43AM
One thing I know is you, the parent has to fight for the child. I am so happy for you and your son. Good luck at the park.  - Midasgold  633.3 #318 10:18PM
Thank you, were looking forward to our trip! - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 6:44PM
So glad to hear all went well!! My son has Asperger's and we had our share of IEP's when he was in elementary school, but we were lucky and never had any issues.  My best friend's husband is an attorney specializing in special education suits and tells us of some of the horror stories he's heard. I hope that this school year will be a great one for your son!! 😊 - nerdgirl  86.0 #3821 10:56PM
Thank you very much! - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 11:07PM
