This sad day in Disney history, September 11th, 2001. Following the mornings tragic terrorist attacks on The Pentagon, New York City's World Trade Center and in the air over Pennsylvania, Walt Disney World and Disneyland closed without incident.
All the resort hotels remained open and provided accommodations to guests who were unable to leave. Phone charges were suspended so that guests could reach family and friends. Food and beverage stations remained open at no charge for guests who were on property. AMC Theaters in Downtown Disney were kind enough to show free Disney films for stranded Resort guests.
The closure marked only the second time Disneyland had locked it's gates in its 56-year history due to a national tragedy.
The first time was after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.
The photos I found are from an article written by a cast member who worked at the park on September 11th, 2001, as part of the "skeleton crew". I enjoyed the read and found it pretty interesting, it has even more photos from the nearly empty park. A true rarity as Disneyland is normally open 365 days a year. To read:
