Skull Rock Lagoon was added in 1961, a seating area for hungry guests of the restaurant. The area was based on Skull Rock from "Peter Pan".  Pictured below: to rededicate the restaurant, Walt Disney posed for publicity with the owners of the Van Camp Sea Food Company, Frank Van Camp Sr. and Jr. also the then mascot for the Tuna company the mermaid. Captain Hook was often found in this area skulking around the waterfall and caves.

The whole area was torn out in 1982 for the 1983 expansion and improvement of Fantasyland.

You can see the Pirate ship if you skip forward to 3:55 seconds in the video link below (too big to post within the lounge) filmed in the 70's. Although the entire video has a neat glimpse of what ALL of Fantasyland once looked like. Pretty darn cool in my opinion!

This next one was filmed in 1968 if you fast forward to 2:11 you can see the view from the Pirate ship as well as the side of the ship. But again, really interesting to watch the entire film as it includes some fabulous footage of the original entrance, parking lot, and retired attractions. Also, be sure to look 1:09 in for the "Christmas Star" on the Matterhorn and at 2:47 you can ride through it via Skyway!

Do you remember this restaurant? Did you have a favorite thing you ate there?

Thanks as always for reading and watching! Hope you all have a terrific Thursday!

The first time my brother and I saw the Chicken of the Sea Ship we thought it was a ride we were so excited. We went rushing toward it and went inside only to find out it was a restaurant. The addition of Skull Rock made for excellent pictures. When they Built Peter Pan Pool at the Disneyland Hotel, I was so happy to see the past come to the present.  - Midasgold  633.3 #318 9:52AM
Ha! Thanks for sharing those memories with us! Did you ever eat there? - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 11:13AM
I clearly remember seeing the ship and thinking "tuna? bleeeech 😝😷". Β It just didn't sound appetizing at all!!! Β I also remember Skull Rock Lagoon and still miss it today. Thanks for the waltz down memory lane. πŸ’ƒ - DisneyGrandma  877.2 #210 9:56AM
Not a tuna fan eh DG? Lol  thank YOU for sharing!  - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:38AM
I absolutely loved loved loved that first movie with the child doing the narration. It's pretty cool to see how much fantasyland has actually changed-Even some insides of the attractions- the paintings seem to be different. I wish I could have experienced it when it looked like this still. And no, I was never able to eat on the pirate ship. That first video makes me most excited about going to Disneyland tomorrow! *feels 8* thanks again!!  - misschurro  6361.7 #17 10:05AM
I think we all turn 8 when we walk through the gates. I know I do every single time!!! Have a great time this weekend!!! - DisneyGrandma  877.2 #210 10:28AM
😍 So happy you enjoyed it so much! I hope and pray I'll be able to see you this weekend! Safe travels my sweet friend! ::cues  Laverne & Shirley theme song:: πŸ‘― - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 11:06AM

awe! I adore you miss Churro! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:53PM
I can remember this, which is a miracle in itself.  I actually found it kind of odd when I went back to DL in the 90's and it was gone. For some reason, I thought it would always be there, and DL would never change. What did I know? The tuna sandwich was my favorite. - Sugarbuzz  242.6 #1449 2:30PM
I bet they did make a good tuna sammy! Thanks for sharing that. It's amazing how much DL HAS changed huh? - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:54PM
As always... Great info and videos! I liked to look at the ship but my favorite please to eat was Casa de Frito! They gave away free Fritos!!! - Boundin  710.7 #272 9:53PM
Oh! Thanks so much! Nice to see you back in the lounge! SHOOT! You would have enjoyed my post about Casa De Frito on August 19th then! :) That place looked so neat! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:06PM
Thank you Duchess, I am on my way over to your 8/19 post. You do a great job. You should take all your "this day" posts and make a calendar or book! I would buy it!!!!! - Boundin  710.7 #272 12:41AM
Lol! You are kind, but I just enjoy the research. Hardly any of this stuff lives in my brain. I'm just happy people like you enjoy them! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:40AM
Love this post!  I remember these but not really any specifics about the restaurant...I wasn't that old when it closed LOL.  I always enjoy pics and videos bc it remind me of my early childhood at DL w/my family.  Thanks!! - MinnieMousewife  914.1 #201 10:29PM
AWE! Happy my posts bring back happy memories! Thanks so much for always taking the time to tell me so! You're so awesome! ((hugs)) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:48PM

I think my kiddos would have loved it!  - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:39AM
Oh my son would go crazy! He loves pirates/ships all that. - LilMissPixie84  309.5 #860 11:18AM
That menu sounds dreadful, but I would have loved to eat on the ship! - madsdad  1868.2 #92 10:00AM
You don't like tuna Madsdad?! Not even chowder? Really?! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 11:31AM
Some of the decor from this restaurant is now on the Jolly Roger in the Peter Pan attraction. - BaseballMickey_CM  7599.7 #11 10:02AM
you have to ride it with me so you can point it out - pikarich  5232.1 #22 10:05AM
I thought that too! But according to Davelandweb "Rumors have also persisted that some pieces were salvaged and re-used in the Disneyland Peter Pan attraction, but based upon comparison photos, this seems doubtful, and there is no documentation for this, either." :( - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:06AM
I'm too young to remember this restaurant, so I wouldn't know what to look for on the ship. And, you pass by it so fast that it might be impossible to see - BaseballMickey_CM  7599.7 #11 10:14AM
i wish they still had this and the big skull :))) - OhanaPhoto  5191.9 #23 10:07AM
but then the carussel and dumbo would not be there - pikarich  5232.1 #22 10:17AM
i'm okay with that ;) - OhanaPhoto  5191.9 #23 2:45AM

I loved the videos!! It reminds me just how much things have changed, especially the queues and the building fronts of the rides!! I don't remember that sun on top of the Matterhorn! I still get that excited butterflies in my tummy feeling like I did when I was a kid when I see these vintage clips!Β Thanks Duchess for a much needed trip this morning! πŸ’– - adisneyfamily  1003.9 #187 10:19AM
How cute is that!? "butterflies"! I get those every time I go to the park, is that weird? LOL So glad you like these! Thanks for telling me! Hope you had a great day! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:50PM
What great memories!! Thanks again Duchess:). I do remember the old FantasyLand, from birth to age 10 we were in the park constantly. They changed FantasyLand when I was 8. Those videos brought back so many wonderful memories:). But I could never eat food from the ship because I'm highly allergic to fish!! Lol. But we loved Skull Rock!!! - hatgal76  449.8 #489 10:43AM
😳 Allergic to fish?! You poor thing! So I guess you don't like sushi then? Lol j/k! Lad you liked the videos! Thanks for taking the time to read and watch! So sweet of you! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:43AM
Ya poor fish less me...πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ - hatgal76  449.8 #489 9:52AM

When did they take it out?  I've seen pictures of this and my parents have a picture that they took with the ship in the backround,  I don't remember ever seeing this ship in person. - DarthMickey  64.1 #4313 3:40PM
They took it out in 1982 to make way for Dumbo and the "new" Fantasyland which opened in 1983. ;) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:51PM
I remember eating a warm tuna "burger" there... I should say tried to eat it... Yuck - carminaire  802.6 #230 7:32PM
Not good eh? Bummer! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:49AM
I ate here in 1967 during my one and only childhood visit to Disneyland. My mom used to make us the tuna melt sandwich she discovered here. It was our own bit of Disney magic back in snowy Indiana! - Melody_CM  13474.2 #3 7:37PM
Mmmmm tuna melts! Finally someone who enjoys tuna! ::high five:: thanks for sharing that!! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:51AM

Thanks SAA! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:51AM
Loved it as a kid. The sandwiches seemed fancier than a normal tuna sandwich (at least that's how I remembered them) - msdizmaui  716.8 #270 12:02AM
πŸ‘ Awe!! I bet they were just because they were sold at DL! Magic right?? Thank you! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:52AM

Eh, cant remember everything. Lol thank YOU for letting me know you enjoyed it! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:53AM
