Good morning! This day in Disney history, August 29th 1955:The Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant opened in Fantasyland!
Hungry? Stop by the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship for a hot tuna Burger, a bowl of clam chowder, tuna sandwich, a tuna salad (served in mini boats), Disney jello, fruit punch or coffee (dispensed from paper cups for .10 cents) or a hot tuna pot pie! All available below deck at the restaurant walk up counter. Also known as Captain Hooks Pirate Ship.
What did it look like on the inside?
Check out this mural displaying Chicken of the Sea products!
Skull Rock Lagoon was added in 1961, a seating area for hungry guests of the restaurant. The area was based on Skull Rock from "Peter Pan". Pictured below: to rededicate the restaurant, Walt Disney posed for publicity with the owners of the Van Camp Sea Food Company, Frank Van Camp Sr. and Jr. also the then mascot for the Tuna company the mermaid. Captain Hook was often found in this area skulking around the waterfall and caves.
The whole area was torn out in 1982 for the 1983 expansion and improvement of Fantasyland.
You can see the Pirate ship if you skip forward to 3:55 seconds in the video link below (too big to post within the lounge) filmed in the 70's. Although the entire video has a neat glimpse of what ALL of Fantasyland once looked like. Pretty darn cool in my opinion!
This next one was filmed in 1968 if you fast forward to 2:11 you can see the view from the Pirate ship as well as the side of the ship. But again, really interesting to watch the entire film as it includes some fabulous footage of the original entrance, parking lot, and retired attractions. Also, be sure to look 1:09 in for the "Christmas Star" on the Matterhorn and at 2:47 you can ride through it via Skyway!
