Good morning! This day in Disney history, August 17th, 1941: Walt Disney, accompanied by his wife Lillian, studio employees, Mary Blair, Frank Thomas, Ted Sears, Bill Cottrell, and twelve other designers and animators to begin a goodwill tour of five countries in Latin America.
President Roosevelt named Nelson Rockefeller head of a special agency: a veritable international chamber of commerce and cultural exchange. This agency sent various Hollywood celebrities to countries that Nazis were making inroads into, Latin America being a major one. They had hoped by doing this, it would extinguish the Nazis momentum. Walt was invited to be one of these celebrity ambassadors. He saw it as an opportunity to look for "new songs, dances, plots and personalities for our cartoons."
Financed by a U.S. government grant at a cost of $70,000, the tour took 10 weeks. Starting today in Rio De Janeiro via Pan American Airways. The film "Walt & El Grupo" chronicles the trip. It features personal letters, interviews with historians, and survivors both here and in Latin America, and never-been seen photographs and film footage.
Disney ended up making two more films inspired by the trip: 1942's "Saludos Amigos" and 1944's "The Three Caballeros" which thankfully were both big hits.
Thanks so much for reading/watching! Hope you all have a wonderful Saturday! Today is an extra special day for myself and several other MWers. Today is the day that CourtyAstroBlisters (CAB) and her fiancé Michael tie the knot here in the gorgeous Santa Cruz Mountains. 👰🎩💏👫💗👏 I'm over the moon excited for them! It still amazes me that because of this wonderful Disney app, I've met some of my very BEST friends. I wish you endless years of happiness and Disney magic! Love you girl! Can't wait to see you in a few hours in your beautiful ivory dress! ::wipes happy tears:: 😍😩😘
P.S. please excuse HandMeAChurroImmaFaint, Slotherini, ZeeAlice, and I if we post a few "Disney-fied" wedding photos from today's festivities. 😉
