Today's post concludes the saga of the traveling Bandstand. By 1962, the Jungle Cruise was ready for expansion (the Indian Elephant Wading Pool scene). The most logical place was Magnolia Park, where the Bandstand had been moved to on its third trip. It was out with the old...
and in with the new in this vintage 1962 shot:
Not wanting to waste a perfectly good Bandstand, Walt donated it to the City of Anaheim, who kept it for a few years. Next (and final?) owner was Rogers Gardens. According to my contact at Rogers Gardens, The City of Anaheim called the owner of Roger’s Gardens around 1975 and said that they were going to throw the gazebo away and if Rogers wanted it, they had to come get it by the next day. A very large truck was rented and the Bandstand was relocated. Here's a vintage photo from Rogers from 1975:
It is now a favorite resting spot in the gardens, and Rogers is making a new sign that advertises the fact that it truly is the original Disneyland Band Gazebo. Rogers themselves started out in Costa mesa, moving to its present location of Corona Del Mar in January 1970. One last photo (from the folks at Rogers) from 2008:
So ends the tale of the Traveling Bandstand. I noticed in the comments from one of my previous posts that someone mentioned that the Bandstand had also been located near the Matterhorn and also by the Rivers of America. Not true on either count. Although there was a bandstand on the edge of the River:
...it is clearly not the same structure. As for Magnolia Park, the name has been recycled and is now attached to the charming little area found between the French Market and the Haunted Mansion in New Orleans Square:
