Good morning! This day in Disney history, July 11th, 1956: The five members of the Barstow Family of Wethersfield, Connecticut, leave for a week-long dream vacation.
The excited family won a free trip to the newly-opened Disneyland California in a nationwide contest sponsored by Scotch Tape. The winnings included: airfare, hotel accommodations in Pasadena and four days worth of Disneyland tickets! The Barstows made a home movie documenting their families free trip entitled "Disneyland Dream". It was shot with a 16 mm handheld camera and is about 30 mins in length. In 1995, an audio track was added.
In 2008, "Disneyland Dream" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Film Registry was also quoted as saying it's "fantastical historical snapshots of early Southern California and the budding importance of the home movies in American cultural studies, as they provide priceless record of time and place".
It really paints a picture of a functioning American middle class family of 1956. The clothes, cars, signs, packaging, planes, haircuts, and luggage–all of it I find interesting to look at. I think I may have been born in the wrong era. ::giggles::
Be on the look out for a now known celebrity who has a short appearance in the film. Please let me know who if you find him/her. ;)
*Also on this day in 1987:The Disney Gallery opens in New Orleans Square. The Gallery features the collection of original art models and moquettes representing form decades of Disneyland Design. The gallery closed in 2007. Later the gallery will be remodeled in to what is now the Disney Dream Suite. The Gallery reopened at it's new location on Main Street U.S.A in October, 2009.
