Best Post of the Day 7-11-13
Good morning! This day in Disney history, July 11th, 1956: The five members of the Barstow Family of Wethersfield, Connecticut, leave for a week-long dream vacation.

The excited family won a free trip to the newly-opened Disneyland California in a nationwide contest sponsored by Scotch Tape. The winnings included: airfare, hotel accommodations in Pasadena and four days worth of Disneyland tickets! The Barstows made a home movie documenting their families free trip entitled "Disneyland Dream". It was shot with a 16 mm handheld camera and is about 30 mins in length. In 1995, an audio track was added.

In 2008, "Disneyland Dream" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The Film Registry was also quoted as saying it's "fantastical historical snapshots of early Southern California and the budding importance of the home movies in American cultural studies, as they provide priceless record of time and place".

It really paints a picture of a functioning American middle class family of 1956. The clothes, cars, signs, packaging, planes, haircuts, and luggage–all of it I find interesting to look at. I think I may have been born in the wrong era. ::giggles::

To watch Disneyland Dream:

Be on the look out for a now known celebrity who has a short appearance in the film. Please let me know who if you find him/her. ;)

*Also on this day in 1987: The Disney Gallery opens in New Orleans Square. The Gallery features the collection of original art models and moquettes representing form decades of Disneyland Design. The gallery closed in 2007. Later the gallery will be remodeled in to what is now the Disney Dream Suite. The Gallery reopened at it's new location on Main Street U.S.A in October, 2009.

Did you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful part of NOS? What did you think of it?

Duchess, you are a gem! I share your posts with my employees every day. Thank you for your daily dose of Disney education. - NascarDave  322.2 #794 12:49AM
I remember the Gallery! I had a friend who was a CM at the Hatmosphere, then Star Trader. She put in for the Gallery and was there as a host in the early 90s. - BombFrogFormerCM  1015.8 #183 8:05AM
Yes I remember taking my then 3 year old son into the gallery which is now the dream suite. It was very much like the gallery is now, a place to showcase disney art. - Plumiegirl  10135.2 #8 8:42AM
Well that woulda been fun! So much history in there! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:07PM

I was born in 1956 so it's fun to watch movies showing what the world looked like in my birth year, especially fashions. - DisneyGrandma  877.2 #210 8:34AM
Oops...thanks so much for posting this!!! - DisneyGrandma  877.2 #210 8:35AM
Same as my Mama! Awesome! Yes! The fashions are so great IMO! I wish people still dressed so nice! Oh, and you're so very welcome! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:09PM
I loved the gallery up there! Very sad they transformed it into a dream suite that almost no one gets to enjoy. I love walking through each room knowing what Walt had intended it to be. - justcallmeKP  270.8 #1152 8:37AM
Thanks for mentioning that, I forgot to add that Walt originally built the area To entertain special guests. :) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:11PM
It was so cool seeing how Disneyland looked at 1 year old. Amazing how some parts haven't changed, and that's a good thing! - MrsFletch  234.4 #1550 8:39AM
Agreed!!!! Classics never get "old" at DL! Glad you enjoyed the movie! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:11PM
Still have to finish watching, but wanted to get some comments in before I forget! I haven't even gotten to where they are at Disneyland yet! I had to laugh at the famil's reactions on tape. So cute. I wonder how much that trip was worth in those days. I would probably cringe. or did they say, and I didn't hear it? I did hear them say $300 in cash for spending money and incidentals. Maybe that included their meals, too? Wouldn't you love to go back just one day and be able to pay the cost for everything as it was back then? Ahhh. So nice! Okay. Be back later, when I finish watching. Had to stop to take the mini to day camp. Oh, and I do remember when the Gallery was above Pirates. I used to think I just dreamt that, but nice to know I was right. Thanks again, for the lovely trip down memory lane, Duchess! - MeridaFan  4243.7 #34 9:07AM
I loved the "over acting" it was so cute! Honestly I don't know how much a trip like that would have costs, hoping someone in here might have a better idea. And no, you didn't dream it! It was real! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜ - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:14PM
I love this film, too. Husband tells me thats Steve Martin in it! - EastBaytoLA  1020.8 #181 9:10AM
πŸ””πŸ””πŸ”” someone knew the answer! Now, where exactly did he appear?! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:15PM
Juggling near the entrance. Check him out - he's rad. - EastBaytoLA  1020.8 #181 7:15PM
You said RAD too?! I like you already! πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ˜˜ - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 7:36PM
Awwww--thank you! Time for a meetup. I'll be back down for Dapper Day and hope to meet some MWers. You and Churro seem rad, too😘😘 - EastBaytoLA  1020.8 #181 9:11PM
Oh! Dapper day is so fun! Hope I get to go this time! I'd love to meet ya! And churro?! OH YES! She's probably the radest girl you'll ever meet! πŸ‘―πŸ˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜ - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 9:40PM
I remember that gallery. There was a painting in there of the elephants in the jungle cruise. It was signed with my name and the year I was born. I always told people I painted it and they believed me - philliprocks  1319.2 #132 9:14AM
πŸ˜‚ Dang! You were one talented baby! 😜 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:16PM
I also loved the Gallery and miss it dearly also miss being able to go out in the balcony for VIP seating for Fantasmic when it wasn't being used by VIPs. Cast members used to give away those seats to fill in the extra space if it wasnt going to be used for a particular show. - TrampsLady  1641.8 #102 9:21AM
Oh yes! I forgotten about the balcony seating! Thank you for mentioning that! :) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:17PM
That would have been amazing!!!! - PixiePirateMaid  345.5 #690 9:26AM
The vacation? Or seeing the gallery above pirates? ;) ((hugs)) hope you're having a great day! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:18PM
The vacation! Well and the gallery! - PixiePirateMaid  345.5 #690 5:56PM
πŸ˜‚ Agreed! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:30PM
I really enjoyed watching that!! I love how much more simple things were back in that era. It's also nice to see how a lot of Disneyland is much more preserved than I had believed before. - London-In-Wonderland  451.0 #488 9:33AM
Oh good!!!!!! I sometimes think that most of us get so caught up in the newest and greatest that we forget how wonderful the simple things are. Yes! I agree, DL really does an AMZING job maintaining the property! :) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:20PM
I love how he says 'Califor-nee-uh.' πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ And 'Los Angeleez.' And that they have to stay in Pasadena! Nothing closer to Disneyland? I'll bet it was Exciting once the DL hotel opened! Gosh. I did not see any celebrity, though. I must have blinked during that part! Need to watch again, I guess. I find it amazing that after so many years have passed, how much has actually stayed the same. Main Street doesn't look a lot different. Even if there are name changes here and there. It still, thankfully, has that turn into the 20th century look and feel, doesn't it? Just what we want! - MeridaFan  4243.7 #34 9:35AM
::whispers:: look for a juggler.....I loved listening to them say those words too. Heck, Pasadena IS close! If I lived that close I'd be in the parks everyday! πŸ˜‚You're right! DL has done an amazing job keeping the parks in tip top shape! Magic! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:34PM
Wow this is so cool, I've never seen this before!! I really love vintage DL, and the era when Walt was always in or near the park! Thanks again for these truly amazing posts!! - adisneyfamily  1003.9 #187 9:52AM
Oh neat! I love that you hadn't seen this before! Me too! Where's a time machine when ya need one eh? - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:35PM
Oh my stars! Hubby and I were just talking about the Disney Gallery yesterday! And I was showing him pictures of the Dream Suite and how it came to be! Thank you Duchess! - Cinderella_Schnooks  3370.7 #42 12:05PM
Really?! What a ka-winkie-dink!!! You're so very welcome!! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:37PM
Thanks so much for posting the link to that movie!! It was awesome!!! I loved seeing the Huntington hotel from back then!! My mom grew up in Pasadena and she would take us to visit the grounds a lot as kids!! It was neat seeing the other spots of LA and Catalina!! I loved seeing DL as it was back then. There were some attractions I never saw as a kid, so it was neat hearing and seeing those! I just loved how everyone dressed back then. This is a great piece of American history all around!! This is probably my favorite history posts!! I also remember going to the Gallery a lot!! We would go up there to get away from the crowds!! It was one of my favorites spot to look at Disney art. I was bummed when they closed it. - caramiapoohluvsbb8  4088.5 #37 1:45PM
😳😱 your favorite?! Wow! How awesome! Well I'm super honered you enjoyed it! You seem like such a kindered spirit, we just love that era! I can't wait to see you swing dance sometime! I hear you're amazing! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:39PM

I remember the Gallery, really enjoyed it up there! Thanks also for this awesome video, we watched it as a family and really enjoyed. My kids were amazed and a bit confused with how different everything was, LOL! I am going to send to my Mom also...she was born the year before and visited DL often as a child. Her parents and brother have now passed away so this will be special and bittersweet for her too. πŸ’— - MinnieMousewife  914.1 #201 9:57PM
What a great video! Loved the injection of humor in it-- like thr family going from the water up back on the diving board, mom opening her little bag and it being full of food- Wish I could do that! It's amazing how much Disneyland has change so much especially with the foliage. Crazy how dry it used to be-Like on the jungle Cruise. Thanks so much for sharing this little bit of Americana. We all here at mousewait sure know just how special Disneyland is - misschurro  6361.2 #17 12:13PM
