Good morning! This day in Disney history June 29th,1974: TheAmerica Sings attraction officially opens to the public in Tomorrowlands Carousel Theater (which replaced the General Electric Carousel of Progress which has moved to Walt Disney World).
A special press preview is held with invited guests receiving a promotional version of the soon-to-be released LP record and a painted casting of Eagle Sam.
The attraction, created by Marc Davis, featured over 114 Audio-Animatronics animal characters, it moved guests on a history of America by using more than 40 musical numbers, including songs from the Old South sung by the Swamp Boys, the Old West, the Gay Nineties, and even “today”. Songs for this show included “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Joy to the World,” “Old Chisholm Trail,” “Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay.” and a pig singing “Bill Bailey” (voiced by Golden Horseshoe legend Betty Taylor). Hosts Sam the eagle (voiced by Burl Ives) & Ollie the owl (Sam Edwards) sang “Yankee Doodle Dandy” each time the carousel rotated to introduce a new musical act.
America sings closed on April 10, 1988. Most of the “animals” in this attraction found a new home at “Splash Mountain” in Critter Country.
Do you remember this attraction? Did you have a favorite scene or song?
Also in this day in 2000, the renovated Autiopia opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
The two existing Autopia tracks were replaced with a much larger Autopia sponsored by Chevron. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray-inspired cars were replaced by three different kinds of cars: Dusty (off-road style), Sparky (sports car), Suzy (Volkswagen Beetle-style). Each was designed to be tied into the Chevron line of animated “Chevron Cars”; 4 versions were sold as toys during the 2000 summer season at Chevron stations.
Do you like this attraction? Do you have a favorite car?
