Good morning! This day in Disney history, May 10th, 2012.
Alice Davis is honored w/her own window on Main Street, U.S.A @ Disneyland park. Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs & Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis presented the window to Davis, which is located alongside the window honoring her husband, legendary Disney animator Marc Davis. The 83-year-old Disney Legend worked w/ Walt Disney imagineering as a costume designer. She first designed costumes for the Walt Disney Studios during the production of “Sleeping Beauty.” It was common for animators to use live-action footage as reference – it helped them to see how the actors, fabrics, hair & other elements moved. And you Disney history fans may remember that it was her former art instructor (& future husband), Marc Davis, who recruited her to make the dress that would be worn by the actress portraying Briar Rose in the reference footage. In 1963, Alice Davis collaborated w/ art director & fellow Disney Legend Mary Blair on the “it’s a small world” attraction for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, & later translated pirate attire from Marc Davis’ original drawings into clothing designs & patterns for Pirates of the Caribbean in 1965.
