Good morning! This day in Disney history, April 3rd, 1966. The Midget Autopia attraction in Disneyland closes to make a new larger walkway for the soon-to-open IASW attraction. First making it's debut in 1957, It was the third & smallest Autopia track following the Tomorrowland Autopia (1955) & the Junior Autopia in Fantasyland (1956). It was the only Autopia where every car had two steering wheels. This Autopia was for kids only. And while the other Autopias looked like freeways, this one looked more like a country road. The Midget Autopia was located right next to the Storybook Land Canal Boats, across from the Motor Boat Cruise. What happened to the other two Autopias? The Junior Autopia closed in 1958, & reopened in 1959 as the expanded Fantasyland Autopia. The Tomorrowland Autopia & the Fantasyland Autopia operated until 1999, when work began to combine the tracks into a single attraction. In 2000, the redesigned attraction opened as the “Autopia, presented by Chevron,” w/a new fleet of intelligently designed cars. Walt donated the Midget Autopia to his boyhood hometown of Marceline, Missouri - where it operated for several years in Walt Disney Municipal Park until cost & maintenance issues lead to it's closure. Do you remember this attraction? What did you think of it?

I do not recall the midget or junior Autopias. These were before my time. I do remember riding the Tomorrowland Autopia with my dad many years ago. I did not notice or was not aware as a kid that this was separate from Fantasyland. I've always had fond memories of this attraction, mostly the fun I had with my dad. I also remember how difficult it was for me to press the gas pedal, and thinking I hope driving real cars isn't this difficult! Today I don't ride this attraction all that often. The fumes can be unpleasant. Still, many great memories were made on Autopia. Thank you SMK! What a great history, as usual, of an attraction that I've loved over the years! Great write up!! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 7:40AM
I think the current version is still hard to push! Lol thank you! Always so kind! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 3:01PM

Cute cars, look like so much fun. - Sugarbuzz  242.6 #1449 8:33AM
I did drive those. I am so old I remember the tomorrow autopia before the guide rail. - sr_citizen_space_ranger  70.0 #4162 8:58AM
When you ride the autopia today, after you enter the car park (not to be confused with my park ) there are two midget car propped up together that look like steel that were actually two cars of this former attraction. As always Disney tries to leave a tribute of some sort in attractions. - pikarich  5232.6 #23 9:50AM
I must look for those. I am usually taking pictures of the kids driving and not looking around. - GrumpyPirateDad  1936.2 #86 12:02PM
Down with midgets! - madsdad  1868.2 #92 9:56AM

Would be great if they went back to the cars with no bar - polo33  65.7 #4275 9:58AM
These were before my time but I have always had a fondness for the Autopia cars. The pictures are so cute. - HalfCaff  518.2 #402 10:29AM
I vaguely remember the old Autopia in Fantasyland, but remember the one in Tomorrowland. I remember it was a white-ish color - BaseballMickey_CM  7602.9 #11 12:02PM

LOVES!!!! - adisneyfamily  1003.9 #187 12:33PM
i remember this ride very well. i loved turning the steering wheel and driving through the garage building. the vehicle drove itself. it was a fun pleasant ride. - Murryd  300.8 #910 12:35PM
Oh neat! Was the garage or barn near the end of the attraction? - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 2:59PM
Yes I remember vaguely. I would always ride with my brother and he always "drove" because my skinny little legs could not push hard enough on the pedal. We loved driving a convertible! I do not remember the originals because they were before my time. Thank you Duchess! - ShariRenee  8577.7 #9 12:37PM
I remember reading somewhere that the current pedals are 25 pounds. One of my daughters first attempt riding without me she stopped halfway through. Her little leg gave out and a kind CM came and helped her finish. - HalfCaff  518.2 #402 1:37PM
I remember that happening too! - ShariRenee  8577.7 #9 2:02PM
the picture looks like me and my little brother. we rode together. i had red hair and his was black. my dad was the ride operator when i was about that age. i wonder - Murryd  300.8 #910 12:39PM
Well that would be amazing! - DisneyDawn  419.2 #531 12:54PM
Did you look for yourself on Yesterland? It looks like that is where the photos are from. Is it you? is it? well is it huh? - GrumpyPirateDad  1936.2 #86 9:18PM

I adored this ride! It was so cool to be able to drive around all by myself! I remember carrying on conversations while driving....I would pretend to be giving a driving tour! So much fun! I wish they had stayed around long enough for my daughter to have experienced them. - Gia  802.0 #231 5:01PM
That is so cute. My 12 year old son still wants me to ride with him so he has someone to chat with. - HalfCaff  518.2 #402 10:37PM
