Mar 28, 2013 6:33 AM  Disneyland Talk Land
Good morning! This day in Disney history, March 28th, 1929. The Mickey Mouse short, "The Opry House" directed by Walt Disney, is released. Mickey owns & performs @ his own theatre, going in drag as a harem girl, in a derby as a Hasidic Jew, & finally in a wig as a fancy pianist! It is the first time Mickey is seen wearing his trademark white gloves! To watch: http://is.gd/r4JXYi Also on the day in 1987, The very 1st Disney Store opens in the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California. It is Disney's 1st retail store outside of a theme park or resort. Disney executives weren’t sure if a store dedicated to selling Disney merchandise in a mall setting would be a success. But the thousands of eager guests that arrived at the grand opening answered that question. :) In addition, in 2000, Disneyland officials lift the ban on park employees wearing mustaches. A rule that had been put into effect in 1957 by Walt Disney himself. πŸ‘¨ In the early days of Disneyland, male cast members were not allowed to have long hair, or any facial hair at all, as this was not seen as the wholesome, all-American image which Disneyland was meant to convey. The philosophy was that park guests actually preferred for all cast members to be clean-cut & wholesome looking. Amusement parks did not always have a good reputation, & Walt Disney wanted to set his park apart from the rest. What do YOU think? Does Disneyland do just that?

I personalty don't like how relaxed Disney has become with the grooming of its Cast and that goes along with the costuming as well. Back in the 90s when I was there they use to send people home for their hair not being neat or side burns being to long, to much makeup, wrong color socks, the list goes on and on. I obviously have nothing against facial hair as I have it myself but think that they need to do a better job and making sure its cast is presentable on stage - Dave  12402.5 #2 1:03PM
^^Agreed. - NotNKansasAnymor  283.8 #939 1:12PM
When I worked in appearance coordination, I had to write up so many people. It really bit hard. - Butterlina  1512.8 #94 7:31PM
I concur, from your time there during the 90's and my time in the late 80's... It was all about the clean cut image no matter your race, color or creed. If I remember correctly there were weight guidelines as well. - BombFrogFormerCM  841.1 #195 7:41PM
Where I work at if you're not clean shaven they will send you home or make you go buy a razor at the TDA building. - TINO  379.2 #542 10:54PM
I remember as a castmember between 1987 to 1990, if you arrived "scruffy" before going on-stage, there were razors and shaving cream for sell in vending machines right next to cast-cutters (castmember barber shop). - BombFrogFormerCM  841.1 #195 6:53AM
😳 HA! Wow! Well, I guess that's better then sending you home for the day without pay?! Thank you for adding that. Always near to hear first hand from CMs! :) - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 7:06AM
They still have 'em. Now they also come with black and white socks and panty hose. - AWholeNewWorld  321.0 #724 8:48AM
Disney seriously thinks of everything - MissMolly  1281.0 #114 10:13PM
Wow! Lots happened this day! I love seeing these early cartoons of Mickey Mouse. That's where it all started, but much has changed. Mickey in drag and a Hacidic Jew appearing in the same cartoon would probably not go over well today. I also remember the lift on the ban for facial hair for CMs. But not only were CMs banned from long hair and mustaches, but for many years guests were actually turned away if they did not meet the appearance and dress standards of the park. This became more of a problem in the 60's, but things changed. Now we have Dapper Days and celebrate the early, more dressy attire. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Thank you SMK! This Disney History brings back memories and gives me more appreciation of the early days of the park! You're so awesome for providing these quality posts!! - IMissDisney  1205.3 #124 7:26AM
Don't they turn away guests who have one R rated clothing now a days? I thought I read that somewhere? - PrincessDaisy  307.7 #799 8:34AM
Here is the official dress code for Disneyland Resort http://tinyurl.com/d79nwx3 - IMissDisney  1205.3 #124 9:02AM
I think CM's should still be clean shaven. Darn hipsters - ScubaSteve028  835.7 #198 12:48PM
^^Word. I'm not a fan of Disney allowing the male CMs to be full of scruff. It looks sloppy and unprofessional. - NotNKansasAnymor  283.8 #939 12:54PM
"Hipsters" ::giggles:: - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 10:30PM
While Disney may allow mustaches now let's hope they still keep to the goals Walt had. No offense to anyone here but when you go to a job that interacts with paying customers body piercing , exposed tattoos , unshaven should all be fixed prior hitting your post. BTW the NY Yankees still have the no facial hair policy. - polo33  63.9 #4088 8:04PM
Didn't Don Mattingly(spelling?) have a pretty thick stache - luverofdisney  19.0 #6821 9:47PM
In 1992 I walked into The Disney Store located inside our local mall and I mustered the courage to ask for my very first application for my very first job. The CM told me I could not have an application, they were not hiring. Then she asked how old I was and told me it would be impossible for me, as a 16 year old, to get a job there. I was crushed, but the rejection ended up being a good thing because I wasn't afraid to go around and ask for applications after that. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. - Linzee  1025.6 #162 7:09AM
I miss the old Disney stores - minnieismyhomegirl  164.3 #2412 9:03AM
I grew up going to the Disney stores in my local mall and it was a treat to go in there. I remember wanting just to go look at all the merchandise. Maybe merchandise has been my thing... - BaseballMickey_CM  6850.0 #9 9:36AM

I too loved going to the Disney store as a kid, and now it's an even greater joy for me to take my 2 year old! Not so much for my checkbook though, lol!! - DsnyPrincessMommy  53.9 #4350 10:47AM

I thought that cm were not allowed to have any tattoo that showed - alphathedog4  147.2 #2648 12:43PM
back in 1977-78 we gals had to conform to the "Disney Look" too! Earrings had to be inconspicuous posts (not even Mickey earrings were allowed!), minimal makeup, hair had to be "done" and no dyeing to an unnatural color (no pinks and purples back then but if it was an obvious dye job - me as a redhead for example!) it was not acceptable), only clear nail polish, wedding /engagement ring or one small ring only, no bracelets, watches, but must either be hidden or not conspicuous for your assigned area, no necklaces. I was told by a friend that when I went to apply (in person only!) to follow those rules. I did and was granted an application and interview then and there. But I saw lots of folks turned away! - Gia  802.0 #205 12:45PM
And...when I was interviewed I was asked where I wanted to work. My first choice was "Tour Guide"...I was told the only way to start there was to be a Disney family member or friend of the family! My next choice was Jungle Boat Skipper..and, yes, I was turned down because I was a "girl"! I was heartbroken, but ended up saying out me anywhere, which is why I ended up in the Emporium (and other stores on Main Street) as a "Hostess". - Gia  802.0 #205 12:48PM
That's so interesting. Thanks for sharing, Gia! - Jacqueline  580.0 #316 1:06PM
The restrictions were pretty much the same in the late sixties. I worked at the Newstand and we had many long haired boys ask to borrow our scissors so that they could cut their hair right there and enter the park. - disneygirl66  8.5 #10925 2:51PM
Gia--so interesting! And not that long ago, really. Sounds funny now that your sex would determine if you could do a job or not! Disneygirl66--we're those boys park guests you are talking about? How funny! - MeridaFan  3510.6 #33 8:00PM
Lots of great info, thanks so much Duchess!! I love the Disney Stores, so happy we have them! 😊😊 - MinnieMousewife  868.6 #188 12:58PM
Great info as usual my dear! I'm so glad Disney stores were created because for those of us who don't live near DL I can get my fix that way! And long live the mustache! πŸ‘¨ - CourtyAstroBlisters  700.5 #240 7:25PM

Walt had a mustache - Plumiegirl  8572.2 #3 10:10PM
Truth. - GrumpyPirateDad  1830.8 #77 10:26PM
Yes, but it was well groomed. I would prefer clean shaven CMs, but I could make my peace with well groomed mustaches, but no goatees or beards, that's too much facial hair. - NotNKansasAnymor  283.8 #939 10:32PM
I agree. I don't like facial hair on a man either. - coll  31.3 #5359 10:55PM

I heard a law was passed this year that permitted dogs to be allowed in any outdoor dining patio area... someone should look into if this applies lol ... - TheRealJackandSally  72.1 #0 7:08PM
My dog was welcome there for the MW striker night meet up on Mar 31! - MelodyMouse  4019.8 #26 1:45PM

http://cchealth.org/eh/retail-food/dog-law-faq.php Β  I know folks love theiri pets but I still do not think this is sanitary Β from a food perspective. See the url for CA law. Unless they provide a designated pet area outside, dogs cannot lick the plates/utensils, who cleans up after a dog accident......No pets in at a restaurant for now (service dogs are the exception). Disney is excellent with their food cleanliness in the parks per the Public health inspections. DTD does not fare as well per Retaurarant inspection. Check the Health Care Agency for the current restaurant inspections. As a Public health nurse I always check to see who is keeping clean in their kitchens. Diners beware! - Plumiegirl  8572.2 #3 10:42AM
i asked for MW meet up discount on 3/31 and nobody working knew what I was taLking about but they did give me an ap discount - MelodyMouse  4019.8 #26 4:22PM
