โCondor Flatsโฝ: (Long, but worth the read!) I've been wanting to share some interesting information about the Condor Flats area of DCA with you all that I LOVED finding out! Hopefully it's new to some, as it was to me! : ) As usual with Disney, nothing placed into a land is by mistake, there is a story in the details. This "land" is of course a dedication to the evolution of aviation in CA---and the buildings are not random in the least. They are all replicas of aircraft hangers and meant to represent the history of the aircraft hanger. Starting with (photo 1), is a tent structure to represent the very early days, when test pilots worked on their planes and equipment under such shaded structures. Going next to (photo 2:'Fly N' Buy') the tents then evolved into basic wood structures that were styled like a very large garage and would often doubled as gas stations for cars, and the first wood framed control towers were built as seen next door. (Photo 3:The restroom building) By the 1930's they the first hangers dedicated to aircrafts with large sliding doors, still boxy and low to the ground. (Photo 4: Taste Pilots Grill) As aviation went through a lot of changes during World War II, the first of what we know as modern hangers were created in the 1940's. (Photo 5: Soarin' Over CA) Finally, during the space age and area of the jumbo jet, the hangers became massive and with ample room for these giant birds. (Photo 6: The painted 30 and runway of Condor Flats) Lastly, have you noticed the runway painted on the ground and the marking of 30 in front of the tent hanger? The 30 represents the direction the runway is pointing towards. So runway 30 points at roughly 300 degrees, with 360 degrees being due North. ....I hope this, while pretty long has proved interesting and will make you look a little closer at this beautiful area the next time you walk through! ๐
The engine in front of Soarin' (photo 5) is a replica of the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) to continue on the the details info. - shadowgamer

Thanks SIC! That was very informative! One thing that I do miss in Condor Flats is the airplane crashing through the Test Grill Restaurant. I wonder why they took it out? (I know it is off the subject of history, but my kids miss it!) - 7mouskedoodles
