Okay... I'm literally scared to post this because of the repercussions, but I have to admit. I didn't know it was super taboo to use your flash on rides and have maybe done it once or twice. Sooooooo, why exactly is it so bad to do it? Is it like museum status where it ruins the colors or something. Sorry blonde question I know. Lol
It ruins the experience for other guests. I have been on POTC where it felt like a strobe light at a disco. At least I remembered how to do the hustle. - ScooterMike

You've all done the hustle in POTC? - Philliprocks 306.5 #591 8:39PM
Oh we found the new planking pic! - PrincessDaisy 161.9 #2166 9:06PM
I agree that it ruins the experience and the view especially on POTC. Just turn the flash off people. - MikeyMouse 64.4 #3555 8:47AM
Good to know! I didn't realize how taboo it was until I joined mw and noticed how many people complianed about that being a problem. I'm glad I know now so I don't ruin other people's experience. :) - Belleslibrary
270.8 #835 8:36PM
I didn't know either till I started hanging out around here. And I believe I heard it first from MSG - Philliprocks 306.5 #591 8:48PM
Another public service MW offers! Perspective! - LaneSparrow316 846.9 #109 11:22PM
They even tell you several times (both live and Pre-recorded) when you are seated in the boat on POTC that there are no flash pictures. We often mimic the recording with our pirate voices, "...and please, no flash pictures! Now off with ya!" lol - RadioMaverick 673.1 #160 4:50AM
How could someone not know this or understand why? Every attraction you go to you are generally reminded more than once not use flash photography. - NotNKansasAnymor 184.4 #1846 12:02PM
@NNKA - I think she knew she wasn't supposed to, she just wanted to know the specific reason (i.e. similar to preserving an art piece, or simply being courteous to others) - Alicewhoareyou 543.9 #213 12:04PM
@alicewhoareyou. You would be correct. I knew they told you not to on most rides, but thought it had something to do with the actual ride and possibly damaging it, not people eyeballs. ;) - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 12:16PM
It is so you don't catch the people making out on the rides! Silly!! ππ - Deltachiq
973.1 #92 8:51PM
To me, it ruins my experience on an attraction when there's a flash going off. - GrimGrinningAmanda
323.8 #520 8:32PM
If you need your flash, it's a dark ride. Dark rides are dark for reasons. Besides, there's that annoying spot burned into the retinas of those around you who are unfortunate enough to be subjected to your flash. - susieQzee
486.8 #250 8:35PM
I can't say for the official rules but for me personally since a lot of the rides are dark it really hurts my eyes and can cause some people health issues. Its just common curtsy to just go without the flash. =) Thanks for being honest. - tiggertwin
319.1 #542 8:44PM
Thank you for your honest yet respectful response. Like I said, I have only done it once or twice, but it's so enlightening to know that I was potentially ruIning others experience. Thank you! - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 8:53AM
It Also Deteriorates The Animatronics. - dlmickeymouseCM
2379.6 #27 8:51PM
I have heard them come on the loud speaker on potc to tell people to not use flash - PrincessDaisy
161.9 #2166 9:08PM
We should learn to say it another languages for them! Lol! - PrincessDaisy 161.9 #2166 9:14PM
Like Mike said, it ruins the experience and also, its courteous for others who are trying to experience the attraction also. I've been blinded on POTC when someone tried to turn around in the front row to take a picture of something that had already past and used their camera's flash. Don't believe me, ask SueBayou - BaseballMickey_CM
2993.3 #15 9:15PM
I can't believe that people would have to ask this question...to me it's a no-brainer. People who use a flash when there are others on the attraction are terribly selfish and insensitive. - msdizmaui
521.5 #226 10:14PM
Uhhhhhhhh..... Thank you.... I never thought of myself as an insensitive and selfish person, but thanks for the insight. - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 8:40AM
It's easy . If they wanted flash they would of added a strobe light! - Hendizl
1377.5 #58 10:54PM
I would like to see scottermike gettin down with his bad self on that ride haha - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 8:58AM
Same could be said about phone lights on dark attractions. It's weird to travel around madam leota with a glowing thing that the "spirits" aren't controlling. I try hard not to use my phone unless we are stuck for awhile - MarshaMouse
2935.8 #16 11:11PM
Most people know to turn off their light up devices too like phones or neck lanyards or ears. I was ready to scream on the day when they gave the light up ears away for fantasmic, so many people would not turn them off. You just need to treat your fellow attraction riders with the same respect you want and hopefully you can see what could bother others. - secretagentangel
710.6 #143 11:17PM
Mine would turn off on dark attractions automatically - MarshaMouse 2935.8 #16 11:22PM
But aren't the light up ears for GWTS? We Never turn our ears off for Fantasmic because we like the glow! - hueydeweyandlouie 49.1 #3836 11:45PM
The Glow Ears do automatically turn off in attractions, but are also turned on at certain points of the attraction. Example: POTC during the canons exchange in fire. - RadioMaverick 673.1 #160 4:56AM
Cool I didn't know the ears did that! - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 8:59AM
The flash activates the animatronics lust for human flesh. - TedW

Ha ha! Simpsons fan? - JustCantWait 839.8 #111 12:25PM
There has been a time or two when I've gently reminded others that their flash photography was disrupting the experience for others around them. That being said, once, years ago, on the Haunted Mansion someone was a bit over kill with the flash when the ride suddenly stopped when we were going through Madam Leota's seance room. I couldn't help but shout out, "Oooooo you broke the ride because you were using the flash!" Everyone in the room started chuckling, the ride continued, and there were no more flashes. π - NotNKansasAnymor

Many people don't realize that more often than not, the flash ruins the photo as well. You really don't need a flash anyway. - RadioMaverick
673.1 #160 5:00AM
More often than not, the flash ruins the photo as well. And you'll find that you really don't need a flash for a great photo. - RadioMaverick
673.1 #160 5:06AM
Very true. At first when I didn't realize how taboo it was I used my flash like twice on TLMM and all of my pictures turned out crappy. I never use flash now. Because of picture quality and the enjoyment of other guests. - Belleslibrary 270.8 #835 8:44AM
I would hate to think you would fear to ask. I'm glad you know now, I didn't really know how big of a deal it was until MW as well lol I guess I didn't notice too much - MarshaMouse
2935.8 #16 12:21PM
When people use flash on dark rides especially on POTC I just want to throw their phone or camera in the water. So annoying when suddenly there is a bright light. - PrincessAuroraMomma
394.6 #345 8:49PM
It's very distracting for everyone else wanting to enjoy the attraction and it kills the special effects. - Witchie77
266.9 #876 8:51PM
I have had that happen to me to when going on the ride and when they would not stop someone from the ride asked whoever it was to quit. They do have cameras on the ride and people watching - alphathedog4

I alway want to take the camera and throw it lol - lisaw

I got one worse then flash on potc... On our anniversary we rode behind some inconsiderate fools chomping on sour cream and cheddar ruffles.. The smell people the smell!! And I happen to love those chips.. My husband finally checked the dude and his girl but it ruined my favorite ride - nurseclick
38.2 #4123 9:18PM
I'm sure you have experienced temporary blindness as a result of a bright light being shined in your eyes (such as a flash). It interferes with the ability of others to enjoy the attraction but also, if you had to be evacuated from a dark ride with temporary blindness, that's a safety issue. - MoonWillow
376.6 #371 9:29PM
We experienced this a lot today. Darn rookies. And yes it hurts they eyes and distracts from the ride. - TangledsDad

FOOLISH MORTALS! Your flash photography burned my eyes. Your camera's path now lies past the gates of DOOM - JRDrummer_CM 793.0 #123 11:38PM
We rode Space Mountain once with a guy that kept taking pictures of himself. Worst ride ever! - CherryTreeLane
456.6 #272 11:50PM
I think the only bordering on acceptable instance is if the ride is actually stopped, like for a walk off. I once rode with a fellow mw'er who will remain nameless, and she took several flash pictures on haunted during the NBC overlay. Despite my telling her to stop, and the cm on the loudspeaker doing so as well, she kept doing it. I was so embarrassed. π³ - bluefairy

On my last trip I was with a family member who took a photo on a dark ride and the flash went off. I kinda freaked out on her. I was mortified. Thank MW! π - MousekaNinja 372.5 #379 3:22AM
Sometimes people just make a mistake, like forgetting to turn off the automatic flash, it's the deliberate repeat offenders that need a talking to! πππ - bluefairy 628.8 #175 5:36AM
Gosh, I have an old home video from 2006 of a Disneyland trip, and I watch it all the time! Well Shelby and I used to crack up about this, we recorded haunted mansion NBC, and some kids a couple doom biggies ahead of us kept taking flash photos. The ride actually stopped, and they stopped the music and a lady in a nasally voice came on a loud speaker and said 'no flash please, no flash.' And it just went on after! Lol so it's always bugged me but now I chuckle when I hear that still :) - AvidDisneyThrifter220

I was just thinking that. You are told by the recordings on the rides. Once after just being seated on the Little Mermaid ride, I was checking my camera. The CM immediately said "No flash pictures under the sea." - Lelundrial 344.9 #435 7:45AM
I have spoken to City Hall numerous times and glad to see the CM's saying something on TLM since there is no recording. My husband always says very loudly as we load "No flash photography". LOL - MrsSchnooks 712.7 #142 9:03AM
I think on HM if you take flash photography the ride stops. It has happened to me a few times when there's other people who are taking flash photography. I get annoyed and yell at them especially this one time when I had to use the restroom & that person wouldn't stop π - KladiaDisneyNinja
197.3 #1702 9:52AM
The worst case of this I have ever seen was on Soarin. Someone was taking flash pictures from start to finish. That seats a whole lot of people. Kinda ruined for every one of them. I hope no one was a first timer. - Tom

Oooh I saw this happen too! - MrsSchnooks 712.7 #142 12:47PM
I was on Pirates in front of a couple who took tons of flash pictures the entire ride and it was totally distracting and annoying. Also, people need to turn off their Glow with the Show ears, firework ears, giant flashing Mickey head necklaces, etc. on dark rides!!! - JustCantWait
839.8 #111 12:22PM
I said this last night too and then was reminded that the GWTS ears are supposed to now go off by themselves in dark rides, they did not do that in the beginning. So hopefully at least those won't be on during the ride too.:) - secretagentangel 710.6 #143 12:39PM
I was on POTC as well when this person in the front took pictures of basically everything he saw. Even though I have been on this ride a lot of times before, it really just ruined the experience. - DisneyForLife(:

Yes it was from mw that I learned this as well. So now I do not take my shirt off on attractions π - Villescas8

I did it once a few years ago on HM. Then a cm came on the loudspeaker to tell me knock it off. Never did it again π - ima-pirateswife

So, if you're stopped for more than a few minutes, is that an exception to the rule? We were stuck on HM for a short time and I broke the rule and took a great picture of the bride's dress and a baby buggy that I'd never noticed before. I didn't post it on here for fear of being blacklisted!! - nerdgirl
