Feb 8, 2013 7:46 AM  Disneyland Talk Land
Good morning! This day in Disney history Feb. 8th, 2001. Disney's 2nd Anaheim park & 8th theme park in the world, Disney's California Adventure officially opens along w/ the Grand Californian hotel. California Adventure is the centerpiece of a $1.4-billion expansion of what will now be called the Disneyland Resort. Michael Eisner's dedication on this day includes these words: "To all who believe in the power of dreams … Welcome! Disney's California Adventure opens its golden gates to you. Here we pay tribute to the dreamers of the past … the native people, explorers, immigrants, aviators, entrepreneurs and entertainers who built the Golden State. And we salute a new generation of dreamers who are creating the wonders of tomorrow … from the silver screen to the computer screen … from the fertile farmlands to the far reaches of space. Disney's California Adventure celebrates the richness and the diversity of California … its land, its people its spirit and above all, the dreams that it continues to inspire." Were you there on opening day? What did you think of the original DCA?

I remember watching on the news on opening day. The crowds they had predicted never materialized, and the park was quiet. I never saw it for myself until 2006, so some of the original attractions were already gone by then. I think the old DCA was a bit cheezy in places. The movie with Whoopi Goldberg was just so unintentionally funny and cheezy. The videos of Superstar Limo are just plain creepy. The recent updates, including Buena Vista Street and Cars Land, were definately needed and have made this the awesome park it is today. - ScooterMike  1963.0 #83 8:03AM
I miss the Whoopi movie. Spot on with that. - Jacqueline  580.0 #349 8:58AM
Yes.. I agree Mike. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:14AM
Standing in line for Golden Dreams was where I met Topher Grace ❤ - BettyPoop  237.5 #1500 10:55AM
Thankfully I haven't had any golden dreams since I was a child - ScooterMike  1963.0 #83 11:18AM
My dad was one of the native Americans in the whoopi. movie. - Chumash28  1207.7 #143 10:28PM
I remember when DCA opened but I was not living in California at the time... It wasn't until about 3 years later that I saw the new park. My honest opinion of the park was disappointment. I thought it lacked the Disney qualities I've known for years. The new park is a lot better but I still consider Disneyland to be where the Magic really is. Thank you SMK for another great Disney History! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 8:15AM
I agree. It's hard to be DCA next to the original and most famous park in the world! - MoonWillow  381.3 #589 8:36AM
I have a cool story about this. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 8:56AM
I love mypark sensitivity - pikarich  5232.6 #23 10:54AM
I agree too, I took my son for his 5th birthday. I was very disappointing. - nicealex77  726.1 #267 12:48PM
I remember going on the Castmember only day and then the AP only Day prior to it opening. I took so many pix during the time of demolition of the old facilities such as the Garden Villas of the older part of the DL Hotel, the pool and the Monorail Cafe :(, and surrounding offices, Restaurants. parking lots that are now the DTD area, the old original ticket booths, and the Monorail Station at the hotel. I remember the half way trips from DL to the hotel. It would leave the Monorail station in Tomorrowland going forward to the hotel let off passengers on a one way trip then got backwards to the park. Robert Mondavi Wineries occupied the now Wine Country Trattoria, and Wolfgang Pucks restaurant which is now Ariel's Grotto. And the awesome Soaring over California attraction which was my favorite. So many changes in the twelve years. So much better. Thanks Duchess. - splashphotoCM  885.6 #206 9:26AM
Cool! I didn't know about Wolfgang Pucks - rbeezy  703.0 #275 9:31AM
I think it's a cool concept for a Disney park... It's just taking time to develop it all. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:16AM
I would love to see those demos pix! Miss some of the old DL hotel. That would be cool to see it back then and in progress. I remember taking the tram around all the construction stuff. But I don't have any pix of it. - MeridaFan  4243.7 #34 12:43PM
I remember going there around the time it opened. The wait times were short and back then I loved it. I was younger, so I was more into the "rides" than the shows and other things that were offered. Now, that I'm 12 years older (ugh) I still love it and all the changes that DCA has made. I appreciate it more than I did when it opened. I miss some of the attractions, like the Maliboomer, and regret not seeing some of the others, like Superstar Limo. All in all, I loved DCA then and I love it still today. ☺ Thanks Duchess for the post. - Waites4DodgerEars_CM  1002.5 #188 8:33AM
I miss the mailboomer too! But I love all the new stuff so I've excepted it lol - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:52PM
The first time I went was sometime in the spring of 2002... All I can remember is short lines, an empty park, and only staying there for a few hours. Oh! And CA Screamin' of course. We didn't leave after a short time because we were disappointed, but because we did everything there was to do! CA Adventure was more of a "sideshow" back in those days... I'm glad it has evolved into the full theme park it is today. :) - JRDrummer_CM  875.4 #211 9:15AM
I think that's a good way to put it. It was a short diversion from DL. Things sure have changed. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:24AM
Doesn't pertain to your post, but you look gorgeous in your profile pic!!😍😘 - RCmom  5235.3 #22 10:06AM
Awwww! Thanks love! You're too sweet! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:52PM
I remember going to the AP event before the park opened to the public. We got so scared on It's Tough to be a Bug! The Maliboomer was fun, but I hated the face shield things. Superstar Limo was the oddest attraction ever. I loved playing Who Wants to be a Millionare, but never made it to the hot seat. The one thing I miss most though is Hollywood and Dine! They had about 4 different places to order from inside (which looked like a soundstage) with different food choices. I'm so bummed they took that out... - BettyPoop  237.5 #1500 11:04AM
where was the Hollywood and Dine? to the right of what is now Monsters Inc.? - misschurro  6362.6 #17 11:11AM
I actually like "It's Tough to be a Bug". I don't remember eating at Hollywood and Dine. Sounds like a fun place. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:13AM
Yeah, it was next to Superstar Limo. It had Chinese, pizza, burgers, and soup & sandwiches. Apparently you can still rent it out for private parties! - BettyPoop  237.5 #1500 11:19AM
I'm just glad I got to experience the park before and after - Hendizl  2822.0 #46 12:30PM
Same here Hendizl - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 12:39PM
My dads company does a lot of work for Disney. Most recently they built Carsland and BVS. They had done some of the original construction of DCA. Our family was invited to go about a month before the park opened and experience all the rides and what not. It was awesome. GOod first memories of DCA. - OneDayAlice  497.4 #430 12:34PM
That must have been awesome, ODA! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 12:43PM
Happy Birthday DCA! - Armenda  1159.7 #154 7:48AM
🎉🎉🎉 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:16AM
Happy Birthday DCA!! My how far you have come. - TheNewTrent  749.0 #254 8:04AM
🎉🎉🎉 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:16AM
OK now this I remember! I was fortunate enough to go to the cast member preview. I remember how empty it was and everything was half price. Thanks for the reminder Duchess :) - RickChavez  3671.6 #40 8:06AM
Remember... Even DL got bad press at first. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:05AM
Thanks Duchess! Love the write-up! I think a decade of celebrating the history of the state was enough and I'm glad we have the changes we do now. I was there 8 mos pregnant with my family for AP preview days. That was the only day until 2012 that I actually spent an ENTIRE day at DCA. Now I could easily spend the whole day there if I wanted to! Thanks again for the info! - TinkerSchelle  1981.1 #82 8:09AM
It sure has grown up! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:18AM
I could easily spend the whole day there too! Thanks for taking the time to share that with us! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:54PM
My first trip was on a rainy afternoon that March. There was no one there and we spent a grand total of 2 hours in the park since most of the attractions were closed. It was years before we went back. Now I really enjoy spending the day there. Happy Birthday, DCA! - MoonWillow  381.3 #589 8:13AM
So much to do there now! It's a lot better no IMO. - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:55PM
My family bought 2fer tickets in 2005, so when the day came to go, we walked in, spent 30 minutes there, then left and bought tickets for Disneyland again. Now I get excited to show "newbies" how much the park has to offer! - lovetheland7  177.9 #2279 8:22AM
LOL.. I did the same thing. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:19AM
I remember enjoying the 'Eureka!' parade. I liked the music, and I think the reason why it was so memorable for me was because the performers tried really hard to get the audience to clap along or something and only one lady (aside from me, of course) was getting into it. She was all like "Aw yea, get it girl!" Idk, I just like Disney parades in general 😂 ('Celebrate!' doesn't count, that was a "street party" lol) - rbeezy  703.0 #275 8:49AM
I remember that! It seemed like they had more interactive "street shows" back then with more audience participation. - Jacqueline  580.0 #349 8:56AM
Disney does have a way of welcoming everyone! This is one of the many thing that set them apart. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:22AM
It was a lot different. I'm glad I was able to experience it when it first opened.. I was just psyched for an outdoor rollercoaster (CA Screamin) and I was obsessed with Maliboomer. As underwhelming as it may have been to many at the time, it definitely makes me appreciate all of its current progress today. I miss hearing the Beach Boys and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, but BVS is a million times more cohesive and memorable! Old Hollywood glamour is the best. - Jacqueline  580.0 #349 8:51AM
I agree! Old Hollywood glamor IS the greatest! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:56PM
I miss some of the older things but I guess the changes helped the parks popularity now they need to add a train like DL lol - lisaw  159.7 #2570 9:00AM
They have a trolley 😂😂 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 9:04AM
Not that goes around the park to the different areas, the trolley only stays up front - lisaw  159.7 #2570 9:25AM
Yes... Hence the laughing emojis - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 9:43AM
I'm lazy and have bad feet I need all the help I can get lol - lisaw  159.7 #2570 11:28AM
I was not there on opening day. We went the first time in May, 2003 and were lucky enough to stay at the Grand Californian Hotel! It was wonderful. We stayed for 5 days and had so much fun. We did the Aladdin show, I think. We also went a year later, so not sure if it was then or the later trip. Thanks for this great trip down memory lane! - MeridaFan  4243.7 #34 9:03AM
The Aladdin show is the Best thing attraction in that park! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:07AM
I love Aladdin!!! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:57PM
Glad it opened. I can't imagine what Disneyland would be without DCA and the Grand. I still hope Northern CA will get a Disney park. - E-Ticket  1466.9 #116 9:06AM
Hey E. That would be awesome!!! I think it's possible! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:23AM
I went during summer of 2003 and my first impression was "I miss the trees and shade that DL offers." But I was wowed by the Redwood Creek area-maybe because I'm a NorCal gal. - bayareadisneygirl  157.6 #2601 9:23AM
I almost got heat stroke just walking through the park. It still feels about 10 degrees higher than DL. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:48AM
I remember staying at Inn at the Park (or whatever Paradise Pier Hotel was called then) about a year before DCA opened. We had a park view and it was cool watching all the construction. I don't think we visited DCA until 2003 or so. I think the Millionaire show was going on but we didn't see it. Not sure if Superstar Limo was open but if it was we did not see it. I actually enjoyed that visit and every visit since then. I'm sad I never made time for the Dreams movie. :-(. The only thing I thought DCA was lacking was a good kids land and trees! Otherwise I was always satisfied with its offerings. Maybe cause I never compared it to DL? Always saw it as its own entity. Plus being a proud Californian I think it captured our state well. To be honest I was pretty upset by DCA 2.0 plans. But I have to admit DCA feels more Disney now. If only those trees would grow faster lol I would be a happy camper. - PrincessDuckie  905.2 #202 9:40AM
Best things are Soarin', my most favorite ride ever and the Grand. We have been fortunate to stay there quite a few times and every time it is always like first time! It's our favorite hotel. - PrincessDuckie  905.2 #202 9:45AM
Paradise Pier was originally called The Emerald of Anaheim. - splashphotoCM  885.6 #206 10:43AM
awesome! - VfxGenie  1556.7 #109 10:05AM
I didn't go to Dca until 2008 before we got ap we had some deal with visit 2 days but you had to visit one park then another the next day and I really wasnt impress that much.It didn't feel so disney magic other than the rides mwrs already described like soaring ,screaming toy story mania was already openned but i remember dca always being so empty too.glad they decided to reboot DCA 1.0 to 2.0. A few things that I miss was the sunshine fountain are where carthy circle is now because stitch was guaranteed for a meet and greet there. Also I like the build your own potatoe head with the disney related parts not found anywhere else. Then the wonderful world of walls apperer for the next 5 years first at paradise pier (world of color) then pretty much everywhere and lets not forget the name change from disney's california adventure park to disney california adventure. - pikarich  5232.6 #23 10:23AM
Hey Rich. I remember. I was looking forward to all the new changes. But I'll sacrifice the potatoe head store for some Starbucks😂😂😂 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:31AM
yes mypark I love all the new additions to the new dca ps adding drinking starbucks with mypark to our list in Dca - pikarich  5232.6 #23 10:49AM
Happy birthday DCA, you have matured well. - Linzee  1188.9 #146 10:31AM
Like a fine wine! 😍 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:42PM
We went to DCA about a week after it opened. we expected to spend a whole fun filled day there..we went to Disneyland after about 3 hours. I looved soarin, was too scared to ride screamin, and was scared AFTER riding super star limo. I am so happy with the changes. but I do miss the fun California songs they played at the entrance. - tuesday737  1283.4 #134 10:41AM
I rode Screaming once. Scared the crud outta me. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:45AM
but now you LURVE screamin'!!! - nicoleface  1752.6 #96 11:03AM
NOT! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:08AM
I miss the music when you came in too...they should loop it at Paradise Pier...would be totally appropriate. Not sure if they do, but if I heard it there, I would think I would remember-so my guess-no. Does anyone know for sure? - TinkerSchelle  1981.1 #82 4:35PM
Hey Awesome MWers!!! Duchess_SMK wants to thank you for all your comments and kind words. She's a little busy getting ready for a trip right now. I'm sure she'll personally thank you a little later. 😊 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 10:41AM
Thank you duchess ,wish Mypark would help out a bit with the comment responses - pikarich  5232.6 #23 10:55AM
Haha. Yer a bum Rich😂😂😂 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:01AM

LOL, Pika!!! XD - misschurro  6362.6 #17 11:10AM
Thank you so much for filling in for mr MyPark! Such a great friend! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:37PM
I went there in June 2005 so it was still fairly new. I remember it being very empty. Most of the people at the time were complaining that california was not a good theme. - mightymike  272.8 #1141 11:16AM
I had the same feeling when I first went. - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:19AM
It was a terrible theme for Beach Boys songs and did nothing for their career. - ScooterMike  1963.0 #83 11:21AM
I remember going to DCA after it ipened in 2001(: I just finished 1st grade at the time but I remember a lot! I'll forever miss hearing the beach boys of course, and that sunglasses shop by Muhalland madness with the huge dinosaur! Hehe :D I remember an awesome parade, and it had guys on those weird bendy jumpy things, kinda like stilts and that was the first time I'd seen that and I was in awe! Being so little I was super into Hollywood and movie stars at the time, so I loved the limo ride xD haha watching it on YouTube now, though, I do not feel the same haha :P I never went on maliboomer, and it took me a while to get on screamin. I also remember all the cool sand sculptures they had in paradise pier I think! Watching them was awesome! Always had little mermaid stuff! - AvidDisneyThrifter220  1402.8 #125 11:36AM
What do you think of the new Little Mermaid Ariel's Adventures? - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:39AM
My family and I went 2 months after opening. Being only 9 years old when it first opened I loved it. I remember my mom almost made it to the hot seat in Who Wants to be a Millionare- Play It! We had a great time then and have enjoyed the park ever since. - livelovemickey627  83.7 #3873 11:47AM
Some awesome memories right there! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:50AM
I got to go to the CM preview the week before it opened. That park has undergone some major changes. - Experiment818  1647.2 #101 11:53AM
And lots-o-money $$$😂😂😂 - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:55AM
All well spent. - Experiment818  1647.2 #101 11:56AM
Oh yes!!! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:57AM
My dad works for a janitorial company so before CA opened they had a whole bunch of janitorial companies coming in to bid for the cleaning at night which I believe they eventually decided to do in house but my dad was able to take pictures so we got to see everything before it opened :). Our family loved Who Wants to be a Millionaire! My mom and brothers each got up a couple times. I really wish they'd bring it back! - Seebritatdland  268.6 #1178 11:56AM
Wow! That must have been a very interesting view of the park! - IMissDisney  1205.7 #144 11:59AM
I loved Who Wants to be a Millionaire! - GrimGrinningAmanda  666.9 #303 12:26PM
Me too! Hopefully it'll make a comeback but I doubt it. :( - Seebritatdland  268.6 #1178 1:28PM
I remember the first time I went there and there wasn't that much to do. Now, it's a blast. Love that park so much. It's amazing how much they have improved it. - treradical  126.2 #3096 12:50PM
I agree! I can spend all day there and not get bored! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:39PM
Thanks Duchess, was nice walking (reading) down memory lane! Loved all the posts! 😊 - piratelife4me  1047.3 #175 1:16PM
You're such a sweetie! I'm glad you like these! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:39PM
My first trip to DCA was May 2012. I loved it and still do. I wish I could have seen the park in all its cheesy glory but pictures and video will have to do. My dad did some work at DCA back in the late 90's. I remember he was was not sure about the success. We are hoping to show him all the improvements this year. - RadiatorSprings4Ever  1570.5 #107 1:35PM
Hope that trip happens soon doll! 😘 That'll be so fun! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:40PM
We found the 'old' park on the boring side. Now DCA stands on its own. I can spend the whole day there! Great Imagineering! - MomWithAJuiceBoxBuzz  1190.7 #145 1:38PM
Me too! There is still stuff I haven't done! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:40PM
My kids grew up going to DCA. We always went over for a couple hours after DL. The novelty wore off pretty quickly and it was weird how empty is always was. I do love how everything was brought together DL/DCA/DTD. DCA was like a teenager and now it's all grown up Disney style. - ShariRenee  8577.7 #9 1:43PM
And the 🍸🍻 cheers! 😘 - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 8:58PM
I miss that sun! I always loved it! - tiggertwin  331.9 #736 8:39PM
It was pretty, but I LOVE BVS SO much better! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:21PM
The new DCA is definitely up to Walts standards. Kudos to Bob Iger and the Disney " brass" for green lighting over $1 billion to fix DCA. Well done and next to Disneyland in a class all it's own. - polo33  65.7 #4275 8:43PM
I like that, "the brass" nicely put. And yes, nothing will ever top Disneyland. ;) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:23PM
We went later in the year in 2001 and I admit I was a bit underwhelmed...but I LOVE the changes!! Especially CarsLand!! DCA feels magical to me now. ✨ - MinnieMousewife  914.1 #201 8:52PM
I was at opening day for Carsland, I remember thinking...."you've really done it now Disney! Way to go!" The magic has been BROUGHT! Thanks as always for the support beautiful! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:27PM
Awww I miss the Mickey head!! I remember my family and I went to DCA a few days after it opened and it was the coolest thing to say we had "hopper passes"!! Thanks for the amazing history as always my dear! 😘 - CourtyAstroBlisters  784.0 #236 9:00PM
Hopper passes to annual passes, a Disney dream come true! Thanks for the love doll! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:28PM
Well Duchess_SMK great post as always! I enjoyed the walk down memory lane!!! - Boundin  712.2 #272 9:02PM
I missed the first few years it was open but when I got my pass years ago I would love to do solo trips and just stroll around. Thanks for the awesome info as always! - Cinderella_Schnooks  3370.7 #42 9:46PM
I LOVE a good solo trip! So peaceful! Thank YOU! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:31PM
I loved CA Adventure from the beginning! I probably end up there more than disneyland! Miss some of the old stuff, but most of the changes are great. - PascalsPal  203.5 #1958 9:55PM
I was there opening day and it was completely empty. I went on like everything 3 times - princessaguayo  35.7 #5480 9:58PM
Happy Birthday DCA!! Only seen DCA last 5 years. It is always improving. I love the fact it is opposite DP. So easy to park hop! Thanks Duchess. - RapunzelledColey  138.0 #2918 10:30PM
I still remember DCA 2001. My little sister was a CM. She worked on the Maliboomer. lol...I'll never forget how upset she was that she wanted to be a princess in Fantasyland, but got DCA Maliboomer instead. Who Wants to be a Millionaire was fun. It does feel today much more like Disney than it did back then. And I may have the unpopular opinion on the music as you entered the gates. I didn't care to hear the Beachboys. Much better as Buena Vista St! - Alicewhoareyou  2570.0 #53 10:36PM
We went in 01 thinking it was gonna be amazing.... Fell short. But over the years has grown pretty special. I remember the stomp music show in The Hyperian before Aladen. And the garden area where It's Tough To Be A Bug is. We miss the tortilla factory and Maliboomer but love the improvements to the park. Thanks for the memorie lane trip Duchess. - NascarDave  322.2 #794 11:14PM
I miss being able to go there when Disneyland is overcrowded. We used to go and watch Aladdin and It's Tough to be a Bug, and ride screaming, mulholland, and get an orange catch a flave. Now the secret's out. Le sigh. - bluefairy  643.8 #313 2:40AM
We would do the same thing! I love the new additions, though. - mrstoad  256.1 #1291 1:07PM
I remember when DCA opened. I was so annoyed I could not go. We went when I was 6 month pregnant so we saw it from a distance while it was being build which was torture! A whole bunch of our friends went and kept telling us about it. But I was in my last bit of pregnancy and due any time with my first child and no one would let me go.
