Good Afternoon! This day in Disney history, Jan. 30th, 1959. The TV series Walt Disney Presents airs "The Peter Tchaikovsky Story." This episode is historical in that it was Walt Disney's 1st attempt to broadcast a TV program in stereophonic sound. As the necessary stereo equipment did not exist at the time, Walt advised the viewers to listen to one stereo "channel" on their TV sets, & the other channel on their radio receivers, w/ local ABC radio affiliates throughout the country simulcasting the episode's soundtrack. Walt was anxious to promote his newest animated feature film Sleeping Beauty, (released the day before) which utilized new orchestrations of Tchaikovsky's classic ballet compositions. In addition to clips of the ballet, and Sleeping beauty, the episode dramatizes events in the early life of composer Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky. For anyone that may not know, Tchaikovsky was a 19th century Russian classical composer. A few of his works include "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake" and a ballet version of "Sleeping Beauty." To watch the full episode: http://is.gd/oPwB8A Are you a fan of this composer? Do you think his work went well with Disneys version of Sleeping Beauty? Why? As always thanks for reading!

As a musician, I can tell you that Tchaikovsky was a genius. His music is so fun and energetic. I think it works so well with Sleeping Beauty... it's as though they were made for each other. One day, I hope to see one of the ballets with his music. Watching a live Nutcracker is on my list of things to do. One question, SMK... since Sleeping Beauty, the movie, was released the day before, how was the soundtrack in theaters? Was it not in stereo? Thank you for this... Your posts are always so interesting and I learn every time. - MyPark  943.6 #91 1:12PM
The soundtrack was in stereo, but the equipment in television sets only had mono back then. - BaseballMickey_CM  2769.2 #16 1:16PM
Exactly 👆😘 and I agree with you MyPark, a genius!! - Duchess_SMK  3243.3 #11 1:20PM
I didn't know you were a musician, MyPark! What do you play? I play drums and piano. I'm also a fan of Pyotr's work. :) Especially the first movement of his fourth symphony. - JRDrummer_CM  789.3 #117 1:22PM
I've been playing drums for a long time. In orchestra I also played tympani, chimes, bells and marimba. But my first love is the drums. I do dabble with piano. - MyPark  943.6 #91 1:24PM
I didn't know you were a musician either MyPark! Awesome! - Duchess_SMK  3243.3 #11 1:30PM
That's awesome! Actually now that I think about it I remember you talking to someone (maybe Kevin?) at the birthday bash about playing. - JRDrummer_CM  789.3 #117 1:41PM
Yeah, I believe so. I also remember DMing you about it. - MyPark  943.6 #91 1:47PM
Drums are cool. - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1757.2 #43 2:49PM

I've never heard of this! In high school, I played a lot of his work in orchestra, including the 1812 overture. Walt was a genius by simulcasting his television show on the radio to enhance the audio! - BaseballMickey_CM  2769.2 #16 1:14PM
Fantastic! So happy to share what I've read. What instrument do you play? Be sure to watch the clip when you have time, I just KNOW you will enjoy it! I too, am impressed, once again by Walt. - Duchess_SMK  3243.3 #11 1:28PM
I played the violin. Do you know if that was Paul Freese doing the narration? - BaseballMickey_CM  2769.2 #16 2:54PM
I could have sworn I commented on this earlier. Anyway, thank you, Duchess! Great information, as always. Love the stereo story. Walt was definitely ahead of his time. Will have to watch Sleeping Beauty again soon, I think. The classics never get old! - meridafan  1031.6 #83 2:52PM
His work is absolutly amazing. So wonderful that Walt was always pushing forward. Yes, I think the music was perfect for Sleeping Beauty. Thanks Duchess. - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1757.2 #43 2:52PM
I've never seen this one although it sounds like something I'd enjoy. - madsdad  1119.6 #73 7:13PM
