Good morning! This day in Disney history, Jan 29th, 1959. "Sleeping Beauty", Disneys 16th full length animated feature premieres @ the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles.
Story development started in 1951, meaning that in total, it took 8 years to make. Animation alone took 6 years because of the level of detail in each frame. Have you ever noticed that the film seems like a moving piece of art? Well that's because Walt wanted each frame worthy of being displayed in a gallery!
At $6 million, it was the most expensive animated film ever made. Sadly, it earned $5.8 million, less than what it cost to make, meaning Disney lost money on it.
It will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Music/Scoring of a Musical Picture. The voice cast includes Mary Costa (as Princess Aurora), Eleanor Audley (as Maleficent), Barbara Jo Allen (as Fauna), and Verna Felton (as Flora). Have you seen this film? What is your favorite part?
One of my favs! My favorite part of the movie is the music... Tchaikovsky!! The musical score features many pieces from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet, 1890. Thank you SMK! Love this movie. - MyPark

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THIS! Pretty Much the musical score of the movie was based on Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Ballet... Once Upon a dream is a waltz from the ballet! - otilegna 1072.1 #81 12:00PM
No prob otilenga. Rich, that's one thing I have actually done. - MyPark 946.4 #94 12:40PM
Thanks for the additional info, MyPark! Tchaikovsky is a brilliant composer, and I'd go as far to say 95% of the general population has heard his work, and they just don't know it ;) - JRDrummer_CM 793.0 #123 12:45PM

The book at the beginning was actually made and has been seen in many exhibits. It was very common to use live shots as an introduction to a film winnie the pooh was the most used in this style. Also as part of Fantasmic ,murphy the dragon now on it;s second version is the best dragon in the show with real fire breathing capabilities. The first summer it debut it was missing for most of the first summer due to technical difficulties, who remembers that?my favorite part is the villians did not find Aurora because they were looking for her as a child.lol - pikarich

and to add cinderella can be found everywhere in the parks, from the castle walk through, meet and greet, parades and fireworks. - pikarich 680.9 #156 11:18AM
Very interesting that the film originally made a loss. Something tells me that the DVDs and "Aurora" merchandise sold over the years may have turned this around. Great job Duchess. - RapunzelledColey

Love the classics! The perfect movie! Sigh. I am curious how much rereleases and video/DVD sales have made over the years. So sad it actually lost money originally! I hope Walt wasn't raked over the coals for that! - meridafan
