Jan 9, 2013 7:53 AM  Disneyland Talk Land
Good morning! This day in Disney history, Jan 9th, 1987. Star Tours opens in Tomorrowland (occupying the space where Adventure Thru Inner Space once stood). At a cost of cost of $32 million, It is the park's first attraction not to use Disney-designed imagery. The celebration lasted for 60 hrs. Guests could pay one-time admission into the park & get their hand stamped & return from Fri to Sun. Guests were also given a Star Tours Watch when they entered. The attraction featured the voices of Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman) as Rex the bumbling pilot droid, Anthony Daniels (pictured top right) as the voice of C-3PO, Steve Gawley as Red Leader, Dennis Murren as one of three ILMers (visible in a Maintenance Bay window), & Brian Cummings as the Vid-Screen announcer. Did you like the original star tours? Do you miss it? What are your favorite Star Tours memories?

I started dating my wife in the line of star tours back in 1990 when I was seventeen when she came over to the states us as a family friend. Yes I really love star tours. When we got to take our kids over there I told them the story and that if it wasn't for Disneyland they wouldn't be here. - AussiePirateKing  9.7 #10005 9:55AM
Awww. What a sweet story! Do you live over here now? - MeridaFan  3511.0 #33 10:05AM
Awwwwww! How romantic! Where was your wife visiting from? Australia? - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 10:24AM
No we still live in Australia. I have tried many times to convince her that we should move but she just won't be in it. - AussiePirateKing  9.7 #10005 10:31AM
On a visit to the park with my mom and dad in 1987 (I was 6), we rode this for the first time. Apparently it was so realistic, I was convinced that we had landed on the moon of Endor and as we left the attraction I very quickly (albeit calmly) asked "How are we going to get back to our car?" My dad loves to tell that story to this day. - FunOnABun  19.3 #6784 8:58AM
That's a cute story. Great memory! - MeridaFan  3511.0 #33 10:02AM
What a special memory! Disney magic always impresses me. Thank you for sharing that with us! - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 10:22AM
As always... Love your Day in Disney posts. Thank you! I miss all the old Tomorrow Land attractions but really like the ones also! The new Star Tours is great!!! - Boundin  593.1 #308 8:52PM
Thanks for the info. The one thing I miss the most is enjoying this with my mom. She isn't much of a fan of the new version. This was one of her favorites. Now she almost never wants to go on. :( - RickChavez  3416.9 #35 7:55AM
Awe! Do you know what was her favorite part of the old attraction? - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 8:28AM
I still miss Adventure Thru Inner Space. I remember the first time I went to DL and saw it had closed. It was a very sad moment. As for the old Star Tours, it really needed the upgrade since it was the same every time. I hope they do something similar to Soarin Over California. - ScooterMike  1962.2 #69 8:03AM
Interesting idea about soarin Mike. What locations would you like to be added? Or would you just like the order changed up? - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 8:37AM
Perhaps they could add more western states. The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley would be sweet. - ScooterMike  1962.2 #69 8:43AM
But it's soarin over "California" πŸ˜‰ would you change the name then too? - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 8:46AM
How about "Soarin Over America"? - ScooterMike  1962.2 #69 8:48AM
I've thought this too- change to different Ca locations or at least not have the Christmas parade all the time. - LilSterner  4811.7 #19 8:58AM
It would have a lot more possible location fly overs for sure, but idk if it would stick with DCAs over all theme. - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 8:59AM
Radiator Springs is modeled after Seligman, Arizona - ScooterMike  1962.2 #69 9:01AM
TouchΓ© Mike πŸ˜‰ - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 9:08AM
I miss the pre-boarding video. Lol......I always cracked up seeing the lady with the giant bun on the side of her head. - HalfCaff  426.7 #464 8:18AM
It was soooooo eighties - ScooterMike  1962.2 #69 8:20AM
Oh my goodness! How did I forget about her! Thanks for the giggle! πŸ˜‚ - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 9:46AM
Duchess_SMK I look forward to your daily "This Day in Disney History" Thank you very much for sharing the great history. - aprilinjune4  483.6 #395 8:21AM
BTW, I did like the Original Star Tours, but so glad they did an upgrade. - aprilinjune4  483.6 #395 8:23AM
You're so sweet. I'm happy you enjoy these! - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 10:25AM
I never got to see the old one, but star tours excites me every time, star wars was my favorite child hood movie! - madsdad  1847.0 #76 8:24AM
You never ride the original?! 😳 You poor thing you really were DL deprived huh? - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 11:47AM
Wow! Return any time between Fri and Sun? That seems almost unheard of these days. I did enjoy the original, but I think the newer version is much better bc of the element of surprise. Thanks Duchess! - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  5193.8 #17 8:29AM
I don't think the parks could handle such a promotion now do you? I'd love to see one of those watches! I agree, I love all the different destinations now. - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 11:55AM
Amazing info especially since today is my Birthday! Now I know I share it with Tomorrow Land! πŸŽ‰ - ZeroLove  14.1 #7985 8:32AM

Loved StarTours. At the time it was so different from other attractions. The new Star Tours is fantastic also. We like the picture in the Main St Railroad Station that shows the park on Star Tours opening day. - Tealtownfan  974.4 #170 8:35AM
I was there. Thanks again for the excellent info Duchess. I have the commerative LE Star Wars Coin. - splashphotoCM  885.6 #181 8:49AM
I was not there when it opened, but later that summer!! I won't tell you how old I was but way old enough to remember, lol!! We were SO excited and my cousin from Europe was visiting us. We went there the very first thing in the morning, such a fun memory for my family!! Thanks for making me smile with this post, hope you have a wonderful day!! 😊 - MinnieMousewife  868.6 #188 8:57AM
I can vaguely remember Adventure Through Innerspace. I did like the original Star Tours but am liking the new version that has so many options. I miss Rex though. - LilSterner  4811.7 #19 9:00AM
I love Star Tours, but I also still miss Inner Space. Once when the rest of the rides had long lines and there was no line for Inner Space, my niece and I rode it over and over for about an hour, laughing our heads off the whole time! It's one of my best DL memories. - debbiev  967.7 #171 9:25AM
One of my favorites! I miss Rex but I love being able to see the AT ATs on Hoth after the refurb - FoolishMortal138  353.1 #605 9:45AM
Ohmygad! My fav too!! Oh wait, you didn't say it was your fav. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ AT AT puppies - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  5193.8 #17 9:48AM
I like the newer version of Star Tours...it's different almost every time, and I don't get "carsick" like I used to on the original. But I really miss Adventures thru Inner Space....I loved it! - Gia  802.0 #205 9:48AM
Hmmm. Maybe I should try this. Definitely remember the carsick feel! And not fondly! Hahaha. - MeridaFan  3511.0 #33 10:04AM
Soo Cool! - Armenda  1153.8 #134 10:04AM
I definitely remember the Monsanto ride, which is how we referred to it. Did the old Star Tours. Haven't been on the new one though. If it won't make me sick, maybe I will try. - MeridaFan  3511.0 #33 10:07AM
I rode it for the first time with my mother in 89, she doesn't do coasters and just about had a panic attack before boarding. I even asked the CM for her what it was like, his explanation couldn't calm her down. Reluctantly, she rode and ended up having the best time, we both still laugh about her near breakdown. I miss the original because my kid would ride it 10 times in a row and honestly believe we were not on Earth anymore. I do love the new version also...it was time. - Linzee  1026.4 #161 10:15AM
Wait. Im not your mom, am I?! Hahahaha. Sounds like me! - MeridaFan  3511.0 #33 10:57AM
I like Mickey's space suit. I remember I cried like a baby before riding this the first time. I was so scared but I ended up liking it afterwards. - aidensmama  340.1 #642 10:34AM
love!!! and haha mickey's outfit! - OhanaPhoto  3604.2 #30 11:55AM
I was about to say the same thing :) - DisLUVney  579.6 #318 12:02PM
I don't remember riding the original, but I've been told I enjoyed it. - Lola027  452.5 #436 12:03PM

I was there for one of the Grad Nights in 87. - MermaidHunter  121.0 #3079 12:50PM
My Mom always asked "So where did we go exactly?" LOL - MrsSchnooks  3043.1 #40 12:19PM
I miss the little robot cars on the tracks above your head while waiting in line. And Rex. But I still love the new one. - Fanatic4Disney  268.3 #1100 1:11PM
i was there for all 60 hours and still have my watch - tazzmike68  3.9 #22947 1:26PM
Oh no way?! That's amazing! I'd love to see it! You should post a pic of it! - Duchess_SMK  5936.5 #14 6:35PM
STAR TOURS 1.0 The original. Before the idea of star tours disney had envision a ride based on their Black Hole space movie but was scraped.Disney partnered with Lucas as captain eo was directed by him.The simulators for star tour was military grade to give the ride experience the most realistic feel.Im not 100% sure but I heard stories that the C-3P0 and r2 units were donated and were used in the actual film are the ones you see at Dl star tours queue line. Also as people mentioned the 60 hr party this attraction was the only ride that created a line that snaked down all the way down main street, the only other being indiana jones and had a hidden mickey blasted on the starspeeder 3000 and on the moving parts conveyer. For a time you could get a view of the people mover and rocket rods zipped through the space port.As always disney leaves memories from past attractions hidden.on star captain rex is here and the lady who did the original safety video can be found in the new star tours the adventures continue. Also the second line queue was changed from a security checkpoint to a regular room with views of the planets. Star tours 1 never had a fast pass program. You can still experience the original still at disneyland paris. disney toyko closed the original star tours after the sucess of star tours 2 in dl and wdw. There are no idea when and if star tour 1 will be removed from disney paris at this time. => - pikarich  3779.6 #27 5:50PM
OMG!!!! R2 & C3PO!!!!! I am a major star wars fanatic, so this is a awesome. Thank you. - Jedigoofy  182.9 #2117 5:55PM
Awesome!!! I did not know this ride cost so much back then!! And I ha no idea imagineering had not much to do with the animatronics!! Thanks dear as always for the wonderful history lessons!!😘 - CourtyAstroBlisters  700.7 #240 6:07PM
This was the first ride I went on when I was eight. When we got off, I turned to my dad and said, "That was a great ride, Dad, but I never want to go on it again" (scary for me). As an adult, my opinion changed (obviously). :-) - singinaurora  4.3 #20236 6:07PM
Thanks! Wasn't the line for this crazy? Anyone know how long it got? I remember seeing a comment saying it was all the way down Main Street but don't know for sure. - BrerRabbit  358.9 #590 7:14PM
^^^ see my post,when it first open it did happen =>. - pikarich  3779.6 #27 7:18PM

I'm so sad Adventures Thru inner Space left although I do love Star Tours. - KissDclown  1089.3 #147 8:07PM
Inner Space was great! - ShariRenee  5876.5 #15 8:09PM
I loved this as a kid and now I get asked about Rex every time I am in line with my 7 year old. Now he takes great pride in knowing that he has seen all the variations of the new ride without becoming the spy :). Thanks for the post! - phantor  152.5 #2573 8:09PM
We were at the Disneyland and it was the late afternoon when people started to gather in front of Star Tours (it wasn't open yet). We lucked out and got to be a part of its soft opening. It was a fun memory. - ElectricMayhemMom  1015.6 #166 8:39PM

CROWD PREDICTIONSpring Break is winding down as Disney reduces hours this week. The MouseWait Historical Crowd Index shows mid-70s for this week which seems about right. Crowds will be lighter than last week with Friday and Sunday being the busiest days. - Admin Apr 14, 2015 12:04PM

We have always noticed that Saturdays are better than Sundays! We always come on the weekend and say we want to leave at dinner time on Sunday, but always leave by 11-12 because there are so many people. We love Saturday!! - 1Princess3Princes  373.0 #559 5:39PM
I agree. I think it has to do with most passes being blocked - PoohSizedGuy  18.5 #6929 11:53PM
I love these posts!  I do have a question/request/suggestion...is there a way to only show the 3-4 most recent posts?  It's a lot to scroll through. @@Admin - TiggersAndTinks  122.5 #3044 5:08AM
I second this. The info is great to have, but it's too long.  - 1HitchhikingGhost  221.2 #1632 5:04PM

http://cchealth.org/eh/retail-food/dog-law-faq.php Β  I know folks love theiri pets but I still do not think this is sanitary Β from a food perspective. See the url for CA law. Unless they provide a designated pet area outside, dogs cannot lick the plates/utensils, who cleans up after a dog accident......No pets in at a restaurant for now (service dogs are the exception). Disney is excellent with their food cleanliness in the parks per the Public health inspections. DTD does not fare as well per Retaurarant inspection. Check the Health Care Agency for the current restaurant inspections. As a Public health nurse I always check to see who is keeping clean in their kitchens. Diners beware! - Plumiegirl  8572.8 #3 10:42AM
i asked for MW meet up discount on 3/31 and nobody working knew what I was taLking about but they did give me an ap discount - MelodyMouse  4019.8 #26 4:22PM
