So planning a trip to DL for my sons birthday. If you were given the choice of staying at The Grand or having the extra cash to buy stuff with which do you pick?

The Grand is a beautiful hotel. However, you gotta remember that all you're going to be doing in the hotel is relax and sleep. All your play time is done at the parks. If you booked your trip at the Howard Johnson, you'll have more than enough money left over for tons of souvenirs. Especially for his birthday. Also, if you are planning your trip in the warmer months, I do believe they have an awesome little water park that they can keep occupied in. Either way, have an awesome time. - Waites4DodgerEars  977.5 #167 10:22PM
😁 Yes it is. πŸ‘ - Waites4DodgerEars  977.5 #167 8:45AM
I'd rather have the extra cash. If anything put it aside for another Disneyland visit. - Linzee  992.3 #165 10:08PM
We always stay at cheap hotels. Can't fathom forking over a bunch of money for somewhere we just sleep - madsdad  1846.7 #75 10:34PM
I couldn't agree with you more. - PrincessAuroraMomma  523.9 #351 10:43PM
I would stay at the grand! The ease of having ur room right there will more than pay for itself! Pack lots of snacks so you save $$ on the little things that will $15 buck you to death ...plus dunno how far out u are from your trip but someone suggested you buy disney giftcards each time you go grocery shopping so that you have stashed away $$ for Disneyland - PrincessLaShell  15.5 #7503 10:16PM
Lol! 15 buck you to death. So true. πŸ˜† - tballzz  554.6 #325 10:22PM
We do buy gift cards every week makes saving much easier. - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 10:27PM
I would stay at the Grand. I have the luxury of going frequently so my hotel stays are what make the trip for me. The hotels beautiful and the pools are amazing. Plus it's so quick to the parks. It's worth the extra $$$ to relax. - DisneyBrideΒ°OΒ°  424.4 #460 10:21PM
You could always split the stay between the hotels and have the best of both worlds. A stay at the Disney resort has great memories for me from when I was a kid. But I understand what everyone else is saying. - mlatour  328.8 #680 10:21PM
My vote is to stay at the Grand or the Disneyland hotel . But preferably the grand . My kids love staying there. I know I'm fortunate they don't ask me for much in way of souvenirs . Either way you will make the right choice for your family . Have a fabulous trip ! Your son will love being there on his birthday !!! - eviljules  1030.0 #155 10:56PM
I think that everyone should experience staying on-property at least once. It's great to save money on hotels, but sometimes, it's worth it to splurge for a special occasion. In my opinion, I'd rather stay at the Grand and literally have DCA in my backyard for a few days than skimp on a cheaper hotel so that I can spend extra on souvenirs I don't really want or meals I don't really care that much about. We don't splurge on the Grand very often, but when we do, the trip is a much different experience because we never have to leave that lovely "Disney Bubble." - Spoonful_O_Sugar  569.4 #318 8:05AM
I was just thinking more about this, and I want to add that, as an adult, I vividly remember the excitement of staying in the Disneyland Hotel with my mom, sister, and our adopted grandma. I remember the view from the window, the pool, the shops, the little boats, the lobby, the excitement of taking the monorail into the park, etc. However, I barely remember anything about other hotels that we stayed at during my childhood, except that I hated taking the shuttles and the long walk from the parking lot, lol. As a child, staying on-property made an impression on me and I cherish those memories--I honestly don't remember any souvenirs, even though I know I bought a few things. Obviously, different kids are going to value different things, but I just thought I'd share my own memories. - Spoonful_O_Sugar  569.4 #318 8:24AM
Stay on property. More convienent for quick trip to the hotel to recover from a busy day. We liked to go back and use the pool in the afternoon. Then return to the park for the night. - mlatour  328.8 #680 10:05PM
My vote would be extra cash to buy stuff because they are going to want to buy stuff. I'm guessing its for your son in the picture. He'll probably enjoy toys more than a hotel stay. The Grand is lovely but the majority of kids don't really care where they stay as long as they get to go to Disneyland and have fun. - aidensmama  340.1 #638 10:07PM
I would pick extra cash. I've never stayed at the grand, I'm sure it would be awesome and an experience for sure... But there are awesome hotels all around the resort. And I would rather have the extra cash to spend on my bday boy.. And dinners... Etc. especially if you are planning to spend most of your time in the parks anyways. - joybells  211.8 #1751 10:10PM
Ohh, tough choice...but I say stay cheaper and buy something special you'll always treasure - DisneyDavidEMT  1803.4 #77 10:10PM
We normally stay at the Best Western across the street its 98 bucks a night in April and The Grand is 360 a night. I'm planing to spend the money anyway just depends on if its for the hotel or stuff in the parks. - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 10:13PM
Have you priced the DLH and PP for your dates? - Linzee  992.3 #165 10:18PM
No I haven't checked the others. I like to be close to the gates. The grand is the closest for sure. The Best Western is actually closer than the other two. - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 10:22PM
Gotcha. I will stick with my original answer πŸ˜„. - Linzee  992.3 #165 10:27PM
I would stay at the GCH, only because I never have stayed there before, but actually would stay somewhere else and spend the extra cash. - Sleepingbeautysmom  299.1 #840 10:14PM
The Grand is a dream ...however my mindset is this...I would much rather return home with all kinds of keep-sake souvenirs that will last him a life time, then to come back with just a memory of staying at nice hotel and the jedi sword that he really wanted..and the buzz light year sweatshirt, and the Mickey Mouse pin he almost had, and the Toy Story t-shirt he couldnt get, and the glow in the dark glasses that cost too much, and the mickey ears that weren't the ones he really wanted, and the ballons and the....and the....lol...I think you get the picture. :-) - Donna1988  214.0 #1724 10:16PM
If we stayed at the grand, my wife would buy stuff too. So we stay off property - Murryd  300.5 #830 10:16PM
Extra cash so I can buy even more souvenirs. How about staying at the Disneyland hotel? Still on site and you can save a tiny bit of money? - WeLuvDuffy  3.6 #25300 10:20PM
All great input I am going to kick it around. Our plan is for end of April. It's a bit after his birthday but its a good time to take off from work. I'm kind of leaning towards extra cash. He is a bit too young to appreciate a nice hotel. It would be more for his mom and I . - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 10:31PM
April prices are in the $400s I believe. My son's birthday is April 20 and I looked them up not too long ago. - aidensmama  340.1 #638 10:36PM
Online now it's 360 a night. - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 10:37PM
If you are going during the warmer months, I would stay at the Disneyland hotel for their monorail themed water slides. It is really a pretty short walk to the monorail from DLH - especially if you are on the far side of the grand. I actually prefer the DLH for convenience of having towers with elevators instead of the more spread out Grand. If you can afford it, there really are some nice magic things that happen at the Disney hotels - like character visiting in the lobby & amazing service. - sbminnie  134.8 #2849 10:31PM
Here is my two cents of the night. Your going to pay between 350 and 450 for a hotel room were you sleep and shower? Could you stay else where and get to have an extra trip and goodies? Also you can eat at more restaurants too. Just something to think about... - PrincessAuroraMomma  523.9 #351 10:33PM
The hotel is nice but not worth it imo. I say go for the extra cash. - happiestplace  140.6 #2764 10:40PM
I'm greedy! I'd stay at the Grand AND take the extra spending money! Okay. Maybe stay at Parasise Pier and split the difference? Have fun, no matter What option you choose! - MeridaFan  3486.2 #30 10:58PM
Whenever I save money on a hotel, I can justify more trips. If I get the hojos Super Family rate, I feel like I just won the lotto. We go to DL quite often. We are usually there every 6-8 weeks and sometimes even more frequently. We also like to stay close to the parks and usually look for a deal at one of the crosswalk hotels on Harbor. My advise is to use the extra money to extend your trip. - LaPearleNoir  1360.3 #106 6:58AM
Grand is amazing hotel very fun I recommend it - SplashMountainGirl  18.5 #6860 7:54AM
Having the extra cash. The Grand isn't all that grand. - Lelundrial  504.1 #376 8:15AM
Tough call but I say stay at paradise pier and compromise. Eat at grand Cali though if u can. Napa rose is fine dining at its best :) - missariel33  1860.1 #74 8:23AM
It really depends on what type of visitor you are. If you plan to literally only be in the hotel to sleep/shower, then perhaps you don't necessarily need to spend extra on a hotel. My husband and I live in Oregon so it is worth the extra money for us to be ensconced in the Disney magic the entire time. Our favorite hotel is the Grand Californian and we like to get a Theme Park view so when we are in our hotel at all during the day, we can open our patio door and the sounds from the park fill our room. Our typical day consists of being in the parks from opening to just after lunch. Then we relax in the room for awhile and go back out the enjoy the parks just before dinner and beyond. But, like I said, it really depends on what you envision for your celebration visit. - MrsFletch  125.1 #2990 8:27AM
It is wonderful to have that balcony, isn't it? I hate the dry hotel room air, and so few places (outside of Hawaii) even have windows that you can open anymore. I was so disappointed when they sealed up the rooms at the DLH! - Spoonful_O_Sugar  569.4 #318 8:33AM
How old is he? Having the nicer hotel may be more about you than him. Kids want the experience of the park, character meals, and special souvenirs. I'd say save the money and get him the experience elsewhere. Hojo has the better pool close by so if you may visit the pool during your stay go that route. I would do special on property stays when he is older. - girlzstylin  227.6 #1544 8:40AM
I stayed at The Grand last year and was upgraded to a one bedroom suite. It was absolutely gorgeous and the experience was superb. It felt good being so close to everything! BUT we didn't spend much time at the parks because we wanted to lounge around in our room and hotel. It was relaxing and well worth the money if you can enjoy the room (I tend to love staying in nice hotels). We also stayed at the HoJo months later.. It wasn't bad and definitely served its purpose. We were able to spend the day in the parks and had a close by place to sleep. It was convenient. So I guess at the end of the day, it's a personal preference. I would pick a nicer place if I planned to relax inside. And an okay place if I planned more outdoor activities. - FindMeAtTheCove  237.4 #1403 8:54AM
He's going to be 4. The hotel really is more for us. For the most part we sleep in then go to the parks until after lunch the back for a quick nap. Then we hit the parks til close. It seems everyone is pretty split. I think we will save the grand for when he is older. - PlutosBuddy  403.2 #498 9:16AM
I think saving The Grand for just you two, or when he's older is a better choice. If you're going to spend a little more on The Grand, you'll want to enjoy it. That's a little tough with a busy 4 year old who will most likely want to be in the parks. :) πŸ˜„ - DisneyFanZoe  1130.4 #134 9:19AM
This is a debate I alway had and it comes down to this. We only use our hotel for a bed. We stay at DL/CAL from open to close. We have decided that after we spent so much money on a resort hotel room, we really didn't get to enjoy it cause we only went to sleep so now we save outlet money for food and stuff. But if you do find yourself at the hotel more then it is worth it. So what it boils down to, will I be at the hotel or DLR more? - minnieMisty  275.2 #1007 9:40AM
For us it's always been: stay cheaper=stay longer. :) - Darlingwendi  943.1 #171 9:44AM
There's so many nice hotels along harbour bld that are just as close to the parks as the grand is and plus with the extra money saved instead of being able to go to Disneyland only every 5 years you can go once a year with the money saved staying at one of the good neighbor hotels - steffi  12.8 #8362 9:52AM
