Good morning! This day in Disney history, Jan 2nd, 1977. In Frontierland, the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland attraction closes. As your train traveled through Bear Country, Beaver Valley, the Living Desert & Rainbow Caverns, you saw: Mighty waterfalls cascading off Cascade Peak, Industrious beavers building a dam, Brown bears swimming & resting & even one scratching his back on a tree, Saguaro cacti that look strangely human, balancing rocks that may just lose their balance as your train car passes by, Devil’s Paint Pots (bubbling pots of mud in all kinds of colors), Old Unfaithful Geyser shooting water high into the desert air & Colorful, glowing waterfalls inside Rainbow Caverns. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, replaced the Mine Train in 1979. Do you remember the Mine Train Through Natures Wonderland? What did you think of it?

I do remember that ride! I was only 6 then but I do remember! Especially the falling rocks part, that really stands out in my mind. And here I thought that ride was all a figment of my overactive imagination. Thanks for posting! - TamiLovesDisney  126.5 #2673 10:34AM
I bet that WOULD have been scary! Especially for a 6 year old! And oh yes, it was very real! Thank you for sharing with us! - Duchess_SMK  3548.0 #10 11:08AM
I went on that ride many times when I was growing up and loved it so much! I also remember when you could ride the mules around there, but never got to do that. - leopardditz2000  54.0 #3727 10:39AM
I did ride the mules when I was really small. Dusty but fun, my Dad would take me when he was home from Vietnam. - ShariRenee  1576.2 #51 12:56PM
What special memories for you both! Thanks for sharing with us! - Duchess_SMK  3548.0 #10 3:31PM
This is one of the few closed attractions that I do not remember. I'm sure I must have been on it, since I was 10 yrs old by the time it was closed, but I have no recollection of it. Very cool, though. I wish I could remember. Thank you SMK! - MyPark  946.4 #94 10:40AM
I would have been around 8 and this does not bring back any memories. Great post. - RadiatorSprings4Ever  166.9 #2091 10:49AM
Awe! I was expecting a good story from you MyPark! ::sigh:: - Duchess_SMK  3548.0 #10 2:50PM
Here ya go... "Once upon a time . . . in a great castle, a Prince's daughter grew up happy and contented, in spite of a jealous stepmother. She was very pretty, with blue eyes and long black hair. Her skin was delicate and fair, and so she was called Snow White." I know.. For a clown fish, I'm not very funny. - MyPark  946.4 #94 3:09PM
Good morning & Happy New Year Duchess. I so remember this attraction being an old geezer, lol. I have a few old pix and great memories of this and the old Frontierland. Thanks for once taking us back in time. Keep up the great work. - splashphotoCM  881.2 #104 10:42AM
Neat! splash i'd love to see any pics if you'd be so kind to share. - toph  2406.7 #26 10:52AM
The part on BTMR where the train goes up is part of the old attraction. As you went up, on either side you could see stalactites & stalagmites dripping water in the water causing the rainbow effect. - splashphotoCM  881.2 #104 10:54AM
I will look for them toph, may have some old 8mm movies. - splashphotoCM  881.2 #104 10:55AM
that is so cool! thank you kindly! - toph  2406.7 #26 11:28AM
Good afternoon and happy new year to you my friend! You're not an old geezer! Lol I'd love to see these too! Thanks as always for your encouragement! - Duchess_SMK  3548.0 #10 2:52PM
I loved this ride but the balancing rocks scared me when I was little. I remember the glowing water inside the caverns...beautiful. Thanks for the memories. - kskating  378.8 #364 10:48AM
Seems a lot of people were scared by those rocks! Lol I bet that water was magical! Thanks for sharing with us! :) - Duchess_SMK  3548.0 #10 2:54PM

Ha ha! You are awesome! I loved seeing this again so I could show my kids I'm not crazy when I remember things that use to be at the park! ;) miss it, but love its replacement. - piratelife4me  391.7 #351 11:16AM

I wish I had a time machine to go back and enjoy classic DL. - MightyWhitey  648.3 #170 11:42AM
I absolutely adored this ride! There was so much visually to take in. The saguaro cacti fascinated me with their almost human form, to the point that on road trips when we would see them I would strive to see a creature in each one. I miss it, but am glad there are reminders of it as you ride BTMRR. - Gia  794.1 #122 12:41PM
Wish I had been able to experience this one. My parents loved it. Thanks for the fabulous info! - RCmom  2605.3 #22 1:00PM
I just don't remember this. We moved to CA via MI in 1975. I visited CA/Disneyland around 73' or 74' so I must have seen or rode it. - HalfCaff  93.0 #3155 3:02PM
Walt had such a passion for technology but also loved the old west and nature. Alot of his early film and documentary weres based on nature and even had a tv (don't remember the name).Natures wonderland was the western most border in disneylands early year and had the stage coach ride and mule packs as well with the train.Later the short lived holidayland a seperate picnic area would appear near this area.Today there are a few bits of the old track around the thunderanch/frontierland,some of the saloon/city shops and along the river of America as well. - pikarich  677.6 #158 7:05PM
I do remember this. It was a lot of fun! I remember the balancing rocks. I remember all that bubbling stuff. Years later, I could never remember what ride that was in and why I never saw it again. Or if it had even been at Disneyland or was at Knott's! So glad to know now what and where it was! Thank you! Edited after I read the other responses. I remember tht glowin water. Lots of blues, I remember. Also, the track going up, like on a roller coaster almost, with those stalactites and stalagmites as others mentioned. - meridafan  1099.7 #74 7:12PM
Would have been so cool to experience all this! - madsdad  1244.5 #65 7:24PM
I loved this ride too! I especially remember the caverns and the mud pots, all the colors! I like how they gave a nod to this ride in the caverns on BTMR. - adisneyfamily  564.0 #202 7:32PM
