On this date in Disney history, "Mission to Mars" attraction takes its final flight. This Tomorrowland attraction first opened as "Rocket to the Moon" in 1955 and then changed to "Flight to the Moon" in 1967. After the moon landing in 1969, this attraction seemed outdated, so in 1975, the destination was changed to Mars. As guests would enter the attraction, they would see a "pre-show", which was called Mission Control. Here, guests would see control panels and Audio-Animatronic engineers and technicians and listen on how humans are making numerous advances in space travel and how to deal with the space environment. After watching this, guests would enter and board their spacecraft. This spacecraft was a circular theater with stadium seats (that would simulate G-forces with compressed air) which had many screens on the ceiling and the floors. During their flight, guests would be able to watch the spacecraft launch, learn about the mission of the spacecraft, explore space and eventually land on Mars. Eventually, the spacecraft was damaged from a volcanic eruption and would head back to Earth. After its closure in 1992, the building stayed vacant during the Tomorrowland refurbishment until 1998, when Redd Rockett's Pizza Port opened. Still today, if you go inside the quick-service restaurant, you can see remnants of this attraction (curved walls, high ceilings, the facade and the rocket outside). Funny story...the guy below in the controller room was there for so many years after it closed and Cast members would go back there and dress him in all sorts of funny outfits and put things in his mouth like ciggies and other stuff. - Dave  8643.8 #2 4:18PM
