Good morning! This day in Disney history, Sep 5th, 1966. Disneyland's Flying Saucers attraction (located in Tomorrowland) closes after just 5 years in operation. Similar to Luigis Flying Tires today, guests are propelled on high pressure air flow valves in high-tech bumper cars (saucers). When the New Tomorrowland opened in 1967, the space previously occupied by the Flying Saucers became the Tomorrowland Stage. In 1986, this space became the Magic Eye Theater. For a fun clip of this attraction: http://is.gd/HNVcIy ( app users click detail on the bottom of this thread to make the link clickable) Also closing on this day, the "Tomorrowland Jets". previously know as the "Astro Jets". They reopened in August 1967 as the "Rocket Jets". Who remembers these attractions?

Did you watch the link?! You must! You will be surprised at the similarities! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 8:45AM
I'm not old enough to remember the Flying Saucers, but I remember the Astro Jets. I love anything fifties/sixties syfy. This was the atomic age when the United States was in a race to space with the Soviet Union. Anything space or rocket related was very popular. Cars and furniture began to resemble rocket ships, and many of the movies/TV shows/comic books of the day took us into space or brought aliens to earth. It was a no brainer for Disney to capitalize on this with their Tomorrowland attractions. - ScooterMike  1959.8 #35 8:19AM
You always add such interesting content ScooterMike! Thank you! Disney really is fabulous on keeping up with whats popular! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 8:52AM
Awesome info duchess! - nickb92  69.6 #3417 8:35AM

Good morning, I predicted a similar fate for Luigi's before it opened and wouldn't be surprised to see it gone in a few years. - MightyWhitey  648.3 #166 8:36AM
Did you see the ball in the video MightyWhitey?! DL was in to something there - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 12:50PM
Very interestingm thanks for posting. I do hope Luigi's can survive longer then the Flying Saucers. - Linzee  519.0 #225 8:39AM
I doubt it will unless they bring back the balls! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 12:50PM
What I would trade to be able to go on older Disney Attractions. Thanks again for these history posts. - RickChavez  2216.6 #29 9:01AM
::fist bump:: - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 12:51PM
QHC! I liked the Astro Jets. Fun going up the stairs and looking out over Tomorrowland. Hoping that they can step up Luigi's so it does not become extinct like the Flying Saucers. - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1802.8 #42 10:04AM
They need to bring back the BALLS!!! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 12:56PM
I loved working the rocket jets during the weekdays. It was so relaxing. I also remember the original Captain EO because that was my first attraction. Great post! - Bbnmcas  9.7 #6881 10:13AM
How fun! I bet that would have been a neat attraction to work just to see those little faces light up! Thank you for sharing that! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 12:59PM
Flying saucers were my favorite when I was little. - kskating  377.6 #361 10:26AM
Awe! Have you been on Lugis flying tires yet? - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:00PM
Okay, I guess I am officially old! I do remember the flying saucers. And loved riding those Rocket Jets all the time! Wish they would bring those back. So much more fun getting to ride that elevator up to the top! - meridafan  1039.4 #83 10:52AM
No way! I'm sure you're like a fine wine....just getting better with time. ;) thanks for sharing that! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:03PM

Right?! I so agree! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:08PM
My dad was just telling me about this ride! He worked there when this ride opened and he said the ride never worked quite right, one side of the saucer was always dragging. - erincredible  199.6 #1643 10:58AM
Interesting! I still would have loved to try it! Thanks for adding that! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:09PM

The Rocket Jets were my mother's favorite- I remember we always waited to ride them no matter how long the line (and it moved slowly- remember that elevator to take you up?) The Rocket Jets always scared the bjeezus out of me because I always thought I was going to fall out! - MoonWillow  371.9 #373 11:07AM
"bjeezus" lol! They did look like they were REALLY high up there! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:24PM
I have a photo of my mom on it that I posted on retro day. The problem with this ride is it was always breaking down. - SUUZinOC  715.4 #140 11:33AM

Ah I see! Now I remember that photo! Fun! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:39PM
I remember the Rocket Jets; riding up the elevator was so cool. The ride itself was pretty scary for a lil kid back then - Grindcore  325.4 #502 11:44AM
I bet! I'm sure the view at night from up there was magical though! - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:26PM
Thank you SMK!! The flying saucers, Astro Jets and Rocket Jets were before my time and/or height. But they remind me of a time when Tomorrowland was looking ahead to our future. I hope the referb brings this back. - MyPark  944.5 #92 11:52AM
You mean you don't like the satellite sculpture that's there now? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ - Duchess_SMK  3296.7 #11 1:36PM
