Good morning! This day in Disney history, Sep 5th, 1966. Disneyland's Flying Saucers attraction (located in Tomorrowland) closes after just 5 years in operation. Similar to Luigis Flying Tires today, guests are propelled on high pressure air flow valves in high-tech bumper cars (saucers). When the New Tomorrowland opened in 1967, the space previously occupied by the Flying Saucers became the Tomorrowland Stage. In 1986, this space became the Magic Eye Theater. They reopened in August 1967 as the "Rocket Jets". Who remembers these attractions?

I do I do. The Flying Saucers were cool. I remember these so well. they were my favorite attraction back then. I just found an old VHS tape with old DL 8mm movies on it of the parks with, you guessed it, yous truly on the Flying Saucers. Wish I knew how to share it with you. - splashphotoCM

I'm not old enough to remember the Flying Saucers, but I remember the Astro Jets. I love anything fifties/sixties syfy. This was the atomic age when the United States was in a race to space with the Soviet Union. Anything space or rocket related was very popular. Cars and furniture began to resemble rocket ships, and many of the movies/TV shows/comic books of the day took us into space or brought aliens to earth. It was a no brainer for Disney to capitalize on this with their Tomorrowland attractions. - ScooterMike

My dad was just telling me about this ride! He worked there when this ride opened and he said the ride never worked quite right, one side of the saucer was always dragging. - erincredible

The Rocket Jets were my mother's favorite- I remember we always waited to ride them no matter how long the line (and it moved slowly- remember that elevator to take you up?) The Rocket Jets always scared the bjeezus out of me because I always thought I was going to fall out! - MoonWillow
