Good morning! This day in Disney history, Sep 2nd, 1979. The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction opens. Imagineer Tony Baxter (pictured below) modeled the "wildest ride in the wilderness" attraction after the scenery of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. Do you enjoy this attraction, and why? Has it been awhile since you've enjoyed this attraction? For a ride through video: http://is.gd/ZBq0fh (on the app version, click "detail" on the bottom of this thread to make the link "clickable")

In Zoolander voice: "What is that? A BTMRR for ants? It has to be at least 3times bigger.... - Radius  502.7 #424 11:24AM
hahaha!!! - OhanaPhoto  5120.1 #24 11:32AM
I remember what a big deal it was when it first opened. They had long lines similar to the first days of Cars Land. I also remember they kept the "E-Ticket" sign up for several years after the ticket system was done away with. I love the old west theme of BTMRR. Probably since I love western movies and history so much. Oh, and I last rode it way back on Tuesday night. - ScooterMike  1963.0 #83 7:33AM
I LOVE the info you always add ScooterMike! Thank you! Do you by chance remember the average wait time back then? - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 7:39AM
I was five years old, but I recall it being a couple of hours. - ScooterMike  1963.0 #83 7:41AM

What a sweet thing to say! It's my pleasure, really. Thank you! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 7:20AM
Love the trivia. You've even found a few that I don't know. My kids love this ride so I have been on it tons. It's also one of the few fast rides that I can take my two kids on by myself after the wife poops out in the evening and I take the kids back to the park for a few final hours. - justme2012  142.5 #2842 7:15AM
Yay! Happy you like these! I'm envious that your kiddos like this attraction. My 6 year old refuses to. ::sigh:: maybe in a few years. Lol - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 7:27AM
QC right there! Haven't been on that ride in about 11 years. Love the simplicity of the ride! Not over complicated and just pure fun!! - joyfulmomma  248.5 #1373 7:20AM
Thank you! I so agree! One of my favorites! Hope that 11 year streak ends soon! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 9:20AM

I'm so jealous he likes it! I gatta get LilSweet to try it again!! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:32AM
I've always loved this ride! I remember being a bit torn because I missed the original Mine Train. My dad on the other hand, used to tease me because he liked BTMRR so much better - " Disneyland needed another roller coaster ride!". It still has some reminders of the old ride - the town of Rainbow Ridge and the Rainbow Caverns. I don't remember ever waiting more than 45-60 minutes to ride it in the early days. - Gia  802.0 #231 8:00AM
I so love it when you share your stories with us gia0330! Thank you! 60 minutes isn't bad at all considering it was a new attraction! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 9:22AM
I really enjoy your trivia...especially the park stuff! It brings back so many wonderful memories! - Gia  802.0 #231 3:21PM
This is my favorite attraction in Disneyland because I love the outdoors, the theme is perfect, and I live for drops. Day or night (but mostly night, with the fireworks going off) - it's so much fun. Oh, and who can forget going on this and doing the goat effect?! It's definitely the wildest ride in the wilderness.. big thunder from down underrrrrr! - Jacqueline  580.0 #349 8:08AM
Riding this at night is magical! That down under comment made me giggle! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:34AM
I'm from Utah so this brings a touch of " home" for me. I love all the history stuff you do! Thank you!! - abbeyroo68  184.8 #2187 8:29AM
That's awesome, a little piece of home in your happy place! Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me so! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:36AM
I haven't been on since may. It was my son's first roller coaster when he hit 40". I have priceless video of his face during the ride. - Mouse4life  1679.6 #100 8:30AM
Isn't seeing your kiddos face on attractions the 1st time amazing?! ::sigh:: hearing that made me feel all warm and gushy inside! thank you for sharing! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:39AM
Thanks for the Trivia! So glad my son finally likes to ride this. Lost count of the number of times I would wait in line with my 2 kids and then my son would back out. I didn't feel comfortable leaving him alone so I didn't get to ride. 😞 ✨ - IBelieveInFairies  707.0 #271 8:31AM
OMGoodness I feel your pain! It's one of my favorites an my 6 year old never wants to ride with me. I look forward to solo trips for just that reason! Hopefully both our kiddos will learn to love it soon! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 10:41AM
One of my favorites! - WishIWereThere  298.3 #929 9:10AM

::high fives you:: thanks my friend! - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 11:21AM
This has to rank #1 favorite ride for me. As for the classic rides that is. Reason for that is my family use to go every year to Disneyland and my mom can't ride the rides (she here very sick) so my dad rode every ride with me. He passed away when I was 15 (quit a few years ago) but this is the one ride that he likes the most and every time I ride if I still get tears in my eyes cause I know he is screaming his head off up there with me. Thank you for these great posts. They bring back some great memories. ;) - 2mousears  16.1 #8252 9:25AM
This made me cry! I'm so sorry for your loss but overjoyed you shared this and that my posts bring back happy memories for you! :) - Duchess_SMK  6340.7 #18 5:49PM

I still vaguely remember the commercial they played for it's opening. Awesome commercial back then to a 5 year old, kinda cheesy now. http://tinyurl.com/8rlpd7k - Grindcore  556.2 #365 9:26AM

Bryce Canyon National park is so unusually beautiful. It nice to have it added to Disneyland. And Tony did a great job rendering it for guests to enjoy - E-Ticket  1466.6 #115 9:31AM
This one is my favorite attraction! I'm sad that it goes down in January. Can't ride it now and then it closes for a long time (9+months) :( Enjoy it now while you can! - IDVandalSkipperCM  2417.2 #61 9:42AM
This is one of Kyles(my son) favorite rides..Last week during the Fantasmic AP event my whole family did this ride 4 times in a row without getting off - JollyRoger5  3851.3 #38 9:53AM
By far Bellas favorite ride. She even talks about it in preschool. This attraction has brought me so many great memories over the years. Thanks again for the quality post SMK. Its Sunday and I've been schooled :) - RickChavez  3671.2 #40 10:03AM
What inspired him to create an attraction based off the Bryce Canyon-look was when he found an article in National Geographic saying that this scenic view "should be an attraction at a Disney park" and so, he designed one - BaseballMickey_CM  7560.9 #11 10:50AM
One of my faves! - ScarfGirl  642.6 #314 10:53AM
BTMRR is still one of my favorites, from the famous goat, to the stalagmites and stalactites and Nature's Wonderland pools. My most memorable experience at Disneyland is still the time my sister and I rode BTMRR during the fireworks. That was an unforgettable moment of Disney magic as we were going up the second lift before the goat's turn. It felt like sprinkles of color were within reach in the night sky. - Alicewhoareyou  2550.5 #53 10:53AM
Another awesome post! Thank you - RadiatorSprings4Ever  1566.1 #107 10:59AM
