This has been brought up before, but some people are still wondering about the "awkwardness" of meeting a stranger for the first time and how to even go about starting up a conversation. Any suggestions? I've previously mentioned that I would like to run up to a MWer I've never met and say, "Hey, I just met you.. And this is crazy! But here's my screen name.. So comment, maybe?" 😄
I would observe them from a far. You know. Feel them out. Then go up to them. Give em a lil butt tap. The run away. - MagicalCaprice

I'm gong to the parks today. Should I use your observe then butt tap technique? - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:44AM
That's up to you. If you do use it. I would like creds. Jus sayin. - MagicalCaprice 480.6 #248 11:47AM
Well we would know who each other is because we would be wearing our matching bedazzled jackets to celebrate meeting. - madsdad 1130.4 #72 11:56AM
Definitely. I'll try to take pics too with a caption that says "This magical butt tapping moment was brought to you, in part, by the butt tapping expert, Magical Caprice" - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:59AM

Go to a meet up, and be yourself. Introduce yourself, and start a conversation. Then you'll get to know MWers more and from that, you'll be able to meet more and more, and get more comfortable. - LaTruce
1664.4 #45 11:14AM
since you have met a few mwers just plan a day to hang out with them for a few hours or more and thruout the day you will keep meeting other mwers and it wont feel akward since you are with someone that knows them and can introduce you.....Me and the wife will be more then happy to hang out with you and introduce you if you like... - JollyRoger5
1873.9 #39 11:40AM
That would be great! I haven't had. Ich of a problem introducing myself because I've been more outgoing lately, lol. It would be nice to get the little ones together too! - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:49AM
Deltachiq hosts meetups for mini MWers...those are really fun...you don't have to have a mini to join in the fun :-) - uscdisneyteacher 3089.5 #14 11:53AM
I have a mini! Lol I have tried to make those meet ups, but never get to them. I'm either late or forget once I'm in the parks. I have a bad habit of NOT checking MW while I'm actually there. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 12:03PM
Just a thought, but go to a meetup where adult beverages have been consumed in massive quantities. Everyone will be happy to talk to everyone. And if it ends up awkwardly, they probably won't remember meeting you anyways, and you can try again another day. - Slotherini

747.6 #136 6:00PM
I still don't really go up to random people I see with the buttons on unless I've gotten to know them in the Lounge because the shy girl in me kicks in. I think the best way to go about meeting people is attending a scheduled meet up. Then everyone is meeting new people and it's easier. - LaneSparrow316
846.9 #108 11:08AM
Same with me... Usually. I think it is easier at the meet ups because it is expected, but how do you randomly start up conversation? I get really shy around people I don't know unless it is in a small group. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:13AM
I know, it's hard to believe isn't it? LOL. It's so true, though. I think I saw djbreakdown and Stitch_Ears at the 6/15 merch event and I wanted to say hi but shy girl kicked in because I've never met them. Doesn't help that husband isn't a MWer and doesn't know who anyone is. LOL - LaneSparrow316 846.9 #108 11:14AM
At my first Astro Blasters I just walked up and said "Hi! Are you MWers? I am too!" the fact that it's official makes it easier for me. - LaneSparrow316 846.9 #108 11:15AM
I wanna be on Lane and Boos news team!!!!!... Hahaha - NatalieluvsStitch 338.0 #441 11:16AM
I don't think I've seen someone with a button that I haven't met before...well except for this little boy who was wearing a MouseWait button of a username I did know....found out that MWer lost his button and the kid picked it up and is wearing it. Lol - JenInWonderland 1025.1 #86 11:17AM
That's funny. I had the opposite experience. I met MWers at a meet up and felt really uncomfortable because everyone seemed to have already known each other for awhile. When I have recently walked up to people, I felt more comfortable in talking to them. ☺ - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:19AM
Omg! I just SNORTED! hahahaha.... I love that song! >. - NatalieluvsStitch

Welllll.............. I dunno I would say for all the people I have meet I just go for it... I am outgoing annoying though. I wonder instead of being shy I am just really outgoing out of awkwardness........ I like talking to people though:) I ususally drill people on their life till I fidn something I can click with them on haha - BooEve123
800.6 #116 11:11AM
Hahah so people should expect an interrogation until you find a good topic? 😄 - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:16AM
pretty much lol. I dunno I think out of all the people I have meet ( which has been many) I can only think of like 1 occurrence where i was like ..... yah this is just not going to work out lol - BooEve123 800.6 #116 11:17AM
Hahaha aww! That just made me laugh for some reason. I have met a lot of non-MWers whom i felt that way about. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:20AM
I've seen a couple mousewaiters in the Parks in big groups of people I assume are also mousewaiters, but I've never said hi. Not that I'm shy, they're just already in a group and me saying hi would just make it awkward. - mermaidhair
176.3 #1911 11:12AM
I'm not too big on going up to large groups unless I know a majority of them, eh, or at least one to start talking to. Lol - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:39AM
Especially when it's not anybody I've spoken to before on here. Scary! - mermaidhair 176.3 #1911 11:41AM
Yeah it's harder if it's someone you haven't spoken to! Lol really awkward at first, anyway. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:45AM
Show up at a mini meet up silly!! Lol. - Deltachiq

At least you didn't choose ImTooSexy.. "hey, I'm too sexy! Nice to meet you." - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:24AM
Lol! Yeah, well it's almost that bad. - Twitterpated 230.9 #1231 11:30AM

"most everyone is twiterpated in the spring time". It's a quote from Bambi. It means to be enamored or in love. - Twitterpated 230.9 #1231 12:16PM
I look for buttons all the time...and I'm so shy that I look away...JK...I will tap them on the shoulder and say I'm Dawna and I'm a MWer also...my problem is that I'm really bad at remembering names!! - dawna
286.9 #688 11:25AM
Btw..I wear my button most of the time so if you see me please don't be shy I don't bite..well I nibble a little..and if your behind me you can't miss my Tinkerbell tattoo just stop me and say hi!! - dawna 286.9 #688 11:29AM
Lol me too. I saw a couple in line but didn't say anything... Then later saw a pic they posted and commented that I saw them. Stalker status. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:35AM
Bah ha ha! Stalker status! Creep creep! At least you're able to do it. I freeze and walk the other direction. - onezerohero 147.2 #2328 1:27PM
I've done that before! Lol it's just recently that I have made an effort to talk to them. It took me a year! - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 1:32PM
I haven't hit the year mark yet, so it will be a while for me. Instead I'll to continue to... creep creep! Ha ha! - onezerohero 147.2 #2328 1:51PM
******I totally understand, it is nerve raking, just to walk up and go threw the whole thing, but let me just say,... You will be glad that you did!😊 I have met some awesome, wonderful, and funny people! Now, make your move!😜 - MadameLeota
939.5 #93 11:29AM
I agree. The people I have been meeting lately are so incredibly friendly and fun. Lol but I still don't think I would walk up to a large group. 😃 - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:36AM
Same with me! I have made some great friends and I always can us more! Remember there are no strangers just friends you haven't met yet! - dawna 286.9 #688 11:38AM
I have down RAKs and met MWers. Then you meet up again. Then they bring MWers they know and it trickles down from there. Or just go to a meet up. Everything will be fine. - Chumash28
764.1 #130 11:32AM
Just do small talk. where are you from? How often do you come to DL? How long have you been on MW? - Chumash28 764.1 #130 11:35AM
Que son "down RAKS"? Are they anything like down comfort pillows? : ) - uscdisneyteacher 3089.5 #14 11:36AM
I've done RAKS too. I've been lucky to have met people who were easy to talk to. Have you ever had an awkward moment with someone you met? If so, do you tend to continue the small talk even if you feel they aren't contributing much - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:42AM
No I have never had that awkward moment. Most of the MWers I have met have been great - Chumash28 764.1 #130 12:37PM
Hello there...its always a bit intimidating and scary at times meeting new folks...just keep in mind we all share a common denominator...a love for Disneyland...try starting conversations with simple questions...ie How are you? How's your visit going? Are you here for a few days of just for the day? And so on...try not to think about things too much and just jump in to having a conversation...just be yourself and all will be well :+) - uscdisneyteacher
3089.5 #14 11:34AM
I asked this above.. But What do you do if the person isn't very responsive? - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:43AM
Being a teacher, I had students that are so unresponsive at times...great kids but not too outgoing...this is where you show your social side...offer to go on an attraction...perhaps a coaster or thrill ride to break the ice : ) - uscdisneyteacher 3089.5 #14 11:47AM
I've interned at schools and worked with unresponsive teens. It sometimes can take a looooong time to get them to open up. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 12:01PM
At times one must be fearless and break the ice...I can do an awesome Irish jig just to break the ice LOL : ) - uscdisneyteacher 3089.5 #14 12:06PM
I will count on that. 😃 - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 12:13PM
You can do an irish gig? You have been holding out on me man! - madsdad 1130.4 #72 12:26PM
That talent only surfaces in the most dire of social situations...when the sound of crickets is ear screaching loud LOL : ) - uscdisneyteacher 3089.5 #14 12:28PM
I will make sure to be extra awkward when I meet you so that I can experience this. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 1:20PM
I'm fine with a hi and an introduction. I think folks feel that they have to make a friend connection. This may happen and maybe not. You know if folks are interested enough to go beyond the HI stage. With my disabled son, I can tell by the way folks handle that, if they will be someone I will be friends with or not. I love just saying hi and crossing paths. - Plumiegirl 3350.3 #10 1:41PM
Buttons? There's MW'er buttons? Never knew! So THATS how you meet up.
I will be on the lookout for you now. How do I get one? - DizKahuna
136.2 #2504 11:43AM
Yeah, they order them from a Chrissykins? She stops making them in the summer or something like that. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:51AM
As for meeting people on here, it's usually easier since I've usually exchanged DM's or comments with the person first, and so the meeting part is usually planned which is less awkward. Also even when it's not like that, it's cool because you already have something immediately in common to talk about. - madsdad
1130.4 #72 11:43AM
I agree that if you have communicated somehow it is easier to talk to them. I was on here for a year and didn't contribute much so I'm not really exchanging much. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:53AM
I don't really see how meeting a MWer is any differen than meeting anyone else in life? And we all have a bit of a head start since we are in here with each other so much. 😊 - Sweet_Irish_Cream
2590.5 #21 11:44AM
True. However, when I meet someone it's usually in relation to someone or something else.. Like at a party, work, etc. I guess I would be caught off guard if I were eating popcorn at the parks and random people said hi to me. Lol. Soni think the awkwardness (for me, anyway) is the situation? - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:55AM
******True that SIC! 😊 - MadameLeota 939.5 #93 11:57AM
hi! I've met many many many MWers while working in the park during the last year and a half. Most of the time when they find me at my location, the first question is "are you that guy from MW??" or "Have you heard of an app called MW?" It may sound ackward and weird at first, but once they tell me their MW name, it becomes a nice conversation - BaseballMickey_CM
2863.1 #16 11:46AM
Lol that is how I start it too.. Mostly to make sure I've gotten the right person. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 11:56AM

We wear silly lion hats so people will see us. And they do! Mostly they yell SueBayouuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!! We have had them yell from the second floor of jungle cruise line, the 3rd floor of the Grand...etc... It's fun! If you see us. Just YELL! Lol - SueBayou
2012.0 #34 11:59AM
Or just do what I did go up and bump her...lol.. - dawna 286.9 #688 12:28PM
I saw you once. I spotted the hats. But I heard you were a bully so I ran away! :) I'm kidding! I was actually just too shy to approach you. Next time I see you, I'll yell! - Twitterpated 230.9 #1231 12:31PM
Lol. It makes it easier for people that are scared of going to a big meetup. Then we drag them to one. Lol - SueBayou 2012.0 #34 12:36PM
After she drags them to one, she pulls you around by the hair introducing you to everyone and slaps you on the butt. Truth. - LaneSparrow316 846.9 #108 1:25PM
Hm I'm suddenly scared of sue.. And I've already met her! 😃😃 - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 1:38PM

You guys kill me. I do hit people in the butt. It's a weird habit I can't seem to break! 😂😂😂 - SueBayou 2012.0 #34 3:30PM
So Sue are you going to hit Happy or Quackers on the butt at the next meet up? - Villescas8(V8) 589.1 #186 4:25PM
Ummmm no. Back of the head, maybe. Lol - SueBayou 2012.0 #34 6:21PM
I agree, it is rather nerve wracking, especially if you don't know them in the Lounge at all. Last fall when I was in LA and going to DL a lot, I saw Coaster and a family of four with MW buttons and I was too scared to introduce myself to them because I had never interacted with them. When I saw Sue I introduced myself, but it can be scary. However, next time I'm in the parks... nobody is safe. I'm introducing myself to everyone with a button lol. - KylaShea
533.2 #214 12:00PM
Uh oh.. Watch out mousewait! Lol. That is good that you can do that. I can do that only to certain people... Usually if they look approachable. Lol - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 12:14PM
Haha. Well courtesy of the magazine and being on here for almost a year, I feel more confident with meeting random peeps because chances are they might have heard of me, so it's less awkward :) And I have a lot of MWers that I talk to on a regular basis outside of the app. It's amazing what a little bit of time can do on here! And I have no shame... so that tends to help... lol - KylaShea 533.2 #214 12:19PM
Ah okay! I was embarrassed to say my name because I haven't posted much and people wouldn't know who I am. I shall change that! - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 1:22PM
I'm super shy as well...trying to get the courage to go to the birthday meetup! Hoping it may be easier for me! 😊 - MinnieMousewife
570.4 #194 12:06PM
Have you met anyone yet? - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 12:15PM
Yes...at a local meetup and everyone was awesome! Great experience! 😊 - MinnieMousewife 570.4 #194 12:27PM
People recognize me all the time at the parks from MW. It helps that my profile pics have been clear photos of me. I have lots of experience meeting people I only know from message boards after years of attending scooter rallys all over the country. I can see it being hard for a shy person to come up and say hi. Keep in mind that we all love Disney and having fun. That's what MW is really about - ScooterMike
1959.8 #35 12:07PM
I'm shy and I actually went up to you and said hi! :) - BELLEisima 295.2 #640 12:16PM

But how many people have mistakenly called you Peter instead? - NotSoDapperDan 303.3 #595 4:27PM
Just like everyone says, when u plan to meet up with one, its easier. Chances are they will bump into other MWers and you'll meet them. Next time maybe you'll meet more and before u know it you'll literally know 100s of people on MW. I'm going to DM, if you want to hang out, I'm more than happy to! - MarshaMouse

My hubby and I started with in park raks. Chat for a little bit, and if we got along we would go on a few rides together. At the M.w. birthday a couple years ago my husband won the raffle snd ended up making many friends that day. Seriously when am I going to meet you? I feel like I know you but haven't even seen a picture of you!! - JenInWonderland 1025.1 #86 12:40PM
If you haven't met any MWers then I would suggest going to a planned meetup before you approach someone with a button. yes your first meetup can be awkward at first but usually subsides. After that you'll feel more comfortable introducing yourself to other MWers and soon enough you'll know at least someone in the parks every time you go. I guess the great thing about my first meetup was it was pretty much everyone's first meetup so there were no relationships built yet. And to this day I'm great friends with everyone who attended that day. If you meet people who aren't really responsive or you feel you don't click well then find another group and try again. MouseWait can be "cliquey" so like I said you don't have to be Bffs with the first MWer you meet but more times than not everyone is super friendly. :) - JenInWonderland
1025.1 #86 12:42PM
I think the cliques can be off putting.. Luckily, the few MWers I've met are super friendly! But you're right, if we don't get along there are lots more to meet. 😃 - FindMeAtTheCove 237.3 #1141 1:16PM

If I see a familiar face or button I say hi. I always have my button on my camera strap. I don't know why I'm not shy with MWers. My husband thinks its great because I usually don't talk much when I meet new people I let him do the talking. - vegasbrat

I hope this doesn't sound creeperish but I actually would feel comfortable (somewhat lol) going up to MWs that I see a lot of on here, they all seem very welcoming on here and, from their posts, have made me feel like they would be extremely welcoming if I said hi at Disneyland. :) - kss4tink

Well my last trip I was sitting alone on a bench and a lady sat down next to me, we were both waiting for someone obviously, so I struck up a conversation with her, turned out she was a MWer, and I brought her to a meet up :) - AvidDisneyThrifter220
