This is the only color picture found in Carthay. It resembles the tapestry found in the original theater. It depicts the Donner party....interesting choice for a restaurant 😳
Maybe they thought the painting was named "The Dinner Party" 😂😂😂 - PrincessKristin

After some extensive research (google), here is the connection: "In 1926, Frank Tenney Johnson completed his first three large-scale murals, created as the main drop curtain and a pair of wing additions to frame it on either side. These were created for the Carthay Circle movie theatre in Los Angeles, during the height of the Grand Movie Palace era. The large (30 by 40 feet) central drop curtain was a work depicting the "The Donner Party Crossing the High Sierra." The smaller wing extensions, designed to cover the organ chamber and the other wing entrance to the stage, are known to have measured 18 by 11 feet each. All were believed to have been lost, discarded or destroyed when the theatre was razed. But during the last few years, the larger center section has been rediscovered and restored, and the smaller preliminary drawings still exist." legendaryauctions.com - PrincessKristin

Did this painting used to be in Club 33? I vaguely remember hearing something about it or seeing it before. Does anyone know the history? - PrincessKristin
